Chapter 24 The Disaster in Hezhou

It was dusk when he entered the city. Because Hezhou is located on the northwest border of Ji State, it is the junction between Ji State and Liang State, and an important military base. Therefore, the city is heavily guarded and patrolling soldiers are everywhere. Xueyan had never been to Hezhou before. Although it is not far from Yao Town and is much larger than Yao Town, it is not as prosperous as Yao Town.

Even though he knew that Ye Feng was cautious and could not be hurt casually, Xueyan still came, not only because of worries, but also because of missing her. She hadn't seen her for three thousand years. He was the only person she could not let go in the heaven.

Xueyan saw many camps stationed in the western suburbs of the town, and residents in the city were talking about it, saying that the king of Liang was critically ill and the new emperor was young, so the regime fell and was in civil strife. Emperor Ji Ren ordered Hezhou to step up his military preparations to prevent the war from affecting his territory, or perhaps he wanted to take advantage of the crisis of Liang State to expand his ruling scope.

Xueyan was not interested in the deliberate expansion of his territory between the empires or the ministers plotted to usurp the throne for the supreme authority. The emperor satisfied his ambitions, but the innocent people were suffering.

However, it was obvious that the war had not yet reached this place. But what puzzled Xueyan was that this important frontier town was full of displaced refugees, either squatting on the streets begging, or hiding in the corners to moan, all of them were old, weak, women and children, with sad and desperate eyes, which was really pitiful.

"Little bastard, you dare to steal my things!" A man glared and shouted loudly.

Xue Yan looked in the sound and saw a thin little girl who was kicked out of a restaurant by a strong man. The little girl rolled down from the steps and held something tightly in her hand. She didn't cry, but just rolled on the ground, struggling to get up, her face was terrified and her clothes were ragged.

The fat and big-headed man rolled up his sleeves rudely, cursing and walked out of the restaurant with a fierce look. "I will teach you a lesson today!" Many people watching the fun came around, but no one dared to care. The strong man was about to approach the little girl.

Xueyan couldn't stand bullying others with power, so she flew to block the little girl. "She is just a child, please let her go."

"Oh, there are beautiful beauties in this small and broken place!" The strong man was amazed at first when he saw Xueyan, and then smiled lustfully, "Since the girl is talking, I will of course let her go for the sake of the girl."

Xueyan ignored him and just turned around and helped the little girl up, then saluted the strong man. "Thank you."

"The girl is so fond of dignity, she doesn't look like a native of Hezhou, right?" the strong man walked up to Xueyan and asked.

Xueyan took a few steps back, avoided his entanglement, and turned around and wanted to leave.

"Wait a minute." The strong man stopped Xueyan and walked to her. "You haven't answered my words yet."

"She took your things and I will pay you the silver." Xueyan took out ten ingots of silver from her arms and sent it to him. She came to Hezhou just to see Ye Feng, and did not want to cause trouble here. She also knew that people in this world were people who could not let go of their wealth, so silver was the best place to use it here.

"Ha... I'm the commander-in-chief of Hezhou, how could I lack money?" The strong man wanted to hold Xueyan's hand, but Xueyan did not dodge. "I just want to make friends with the girl."

"Thank you for your kindness. I'll stay here for a long time, so there's no need to say goodbye." The commander of Hezhou must have been the confidant of the national savage. He was transferred to harm Ye Feng. It was already dark at this time. Xueyan just wanted to get out as soon as possible and didn't want to get involved with this person anymore.

The strong man approached Xueyan with his eyes full of frivolousness. "Do you think you can leave?" Before he finished speaking, his rough big hand grabbed Xueyan's slender waist.

Xueyan's elbow hit the strong man's chest, and the strong man covered his chest and retreated backwards. He was surprised in his eyes. How could such a weak woman have such a strong strength? Just by hitting, such a strong man almost fell down.

Several colleagues who were drinking in the restaurant saw the strong man being beaten and came out to help. Xueyan calmly settled the little girl aside, jumped up, kicked down a strong man who was rushing over, and turned around and punched the strong man behind her. She did not draw her sword, but was just an ordinary human. Xueyan worked hard, and several strong men fell to the ground.

The onlookers showed joy, but no one dared to say anything. I guess these villains have been bullying the good people in the city, which made the people hate them to the core, and there was no one to come forward to stop them.

Xueyan said loudly. "You are generals in the army, so you should use all your strength to defend the country, not to bully innocent people. I hope you can do it yourself." After saying that, he pulled the little girl and left in a hurry.

"You can't steal other people's things in the future, do you know?" Xueyan taught softly. "Only what you get from Zhengda and Guangming really belongs to you."

"But we don't have food to eat, I'm so hungry." The little girl was pitiful, and Xueyan didn't blame her much, so she had to give up.

"How come there are so many refugees? Hezhou is located on the border, and business trips should be a rich place." Xueyan looked at the refugees along the street and felt very strange.

"The Liang State is fighting, and most of them are from Liang State who escaped from the escape." The little girl was holding half a piece of chicken legs in her hand. The chicken legs were already stained with soil, but the little girl was very happy and shook it in front of Xueyan with the chicken legs. "Now with the chicken legs, my mother would not starve to death. Thank you very much. If it weren't for the forced suffocation, I wouldn't have gone to steal."

Xueyan squatted down. "Do you have no one else in your family? Now that war is everywhere, you are still so young, you can't run around."

The girl looked sad and sobbed softly when she heard this. "Originally, my family is quite rich. My father is a businessman, but after going to Liangguo half a year ago, he never came back. Even the servants under his father came back. The family members of those servants came to my house to collect debts. If there was no money at home, they took away all the things in the house." As the little girl said that, she cried even louder, and tears fell down, which was very pity. "My mother is sick, we have no money to hire a doctor, and there is no valuable thing to sell at home, so I can only come out and steal things and take them back for her to eat."

Xueyan wiped her tears and comforted her. "Don't cry, sister, I'll help you find a way."

There was a bun shop on the left. Xueyan got up, took out all the money from her arms, and distributed the buns she bought to the refugees along the way. The refugees who received the buns were all gratefully kowtowed to Xueyan, saying that Xueyan was a living Bodhisattva who saved the suffering.

There were many refugees, and the buns were sent quickly. The sky was completely dark. There was a curfew in Hezhou City. People were not allowed to stay on the street at night. The refugees dispersed. Xueyan wrapped the last few buns in paper and put them in the little girl's hand. "Is it okay for sister to go and treat your mother?"

"Okay." The little girl pulled Xueyan to a small courtyard. There was only one well and two small straw huts. The hut was very simple. In the middle was a wooden table that was almost scattered, next to it were two short wooden stools, and a bed was paved with straw in the corner of the wall. A middle-aged woman lay on it motionless.

"Mom, wake up quickly, I've found something to eat." The little girl knelt on the bed, shaking the middle-aged woman.

The woman woke up, slowly opened her eyes, her voice terrified and said slightly. "Mom is not hungry, you can eat."

"No, mom, you haven't eaten for a few days." The little girl cried, brushed the soil on the chicken legs, tore the chicken off the chicken legs and put it to the middle-aged woman's mouth. "Mom, there is meat, eat it quickly!"

"Mom is not hungry." The middle-aged woman pushed away the little girl's arms, with tears in her eyes. "You are still young, you want to grow up, eat quickly."

"Mom, we have a lot of food, we have buns!" The little girl wiped her tears, took the buns to the woman, and showed them to her with joy. "If Mom doesn't eat, I won't eat them either."

Xueyan stood aside, tears wet her eyes. She was an abandoned baby picked up by her master in the world. She was born in the world but was abandoned alive. What kind of desire does her heart have for this feeling of blood thicker than water.

The mother and daughter in front of her are in such a desperate situation and depend on each other for their own lives. The woman obviously hasn't eaten anything for many days and is extremely weak. She holds her heart to die and leaves what she eats to her children.

Xueyan sighed secretly. Who would not be greedy for such unchanging care in times of danger? Instead, she was young, because of what was the reason why she was abandoned by her relatives in the heavy snow?

The woman picked up a bun and took a bite, and the girl smiled sweetly. "Mom, is it delicious? The bun was given by this sister."

"Girl, thank you very much." The middle-aged woman got up from the straw couch and saluted Xueyan with a haggard face.

Xueyan helped her sit on the wooden bench. "Don't take it seriously," she said.

"The girl's simple work saved my mother and mother's lives. I will never forget the great kindness."

Xueyan has never liked to wear gold and silver, and she spent all the money she brought with her. She really couldn't find anything valuable, so she gave it to them. She looked around at the thatched house with a wall of bare walls. "Since you are doing business, how could you live so hard?"

The middle-aged woman sighed and choked up. "When my husband was there, my family was still there. Since he went to Liang State half a year ago, he happened to encounter the chaos in Liang State, and he has never come back. I still don't know whether it is death or life. I am afraid that Liang State will take this opportunity to invade and interrupt their exchanges. My wife and I can only stay at home, but the big house and the fields were taken away by debt collection, so my mother and mother could only get two thatched houses to survive."

"The people here are not covered in clothes and food but not filling their stomachs. Do the prefect of Hezhou ignore them?" Xueyan asked softly. Those government officials would not be invisible to the beggars and refugees on the streets.

The middle-aged woman wiped her tears sadly. "Ah... in the war in Liang State, most of Hezhou were merchants who traded with Liang State. If they cut off contact, it would be equivalent to cutting off our way of life. There were not many families here who made a living by farming. When there was a severe drought, the only little food he received was conquered by the border garrison. Those newly transferred military troops were supported by the high officials of Jizhou and did whatever they wanted in Hezhou. Now there are homeless people everywhere. The prefect can't manage it. Everyone says that these military troops are the confidants of the current national army. Who dares to provoke them? We ordinary people can only swallow their anger."

It was the national teacher again, Xueyan was angry. He was in the imperial capital Jizhou and had to interfere in the border affairs. There was nothing he could not control.

"Since there is a natural disaster, will the country not provide relief supplies?" Xueyan asked.

"The food provided by the state relief was deducted from the national treasury and finally arrived in Hezhou. After finally reaching Hezhou, most of the garrison was exploited by the commander here in the name of filling the military rations. There were very few people who were actually assigned to us. Hezhou is located on the border, with high mountains and far away from the emperor. Even if someone starved to death, he was also buried in the mountains and no one cared about. The prefect is a good official and has defended us for several times. Unfortunately, the prefect is just a small official in a place, with a slight word. He can't fight the leader of the army. He can only swallow his anger and let them be presumptuous in Hezhou."

"It's really lawless!" Xue Yan didn't want to care about the struggle between people. People who are innocent and cultivators must be clear about their hearts and have few desires and have to stay out of the matter when facing right and wrong. However, when encountering such a situation, I couldn't help but feel a little angry. No wonder the strong men who claimed to be the commander-in-arms just now were all full of hearts and fat belly. It turned out that the food of the people of Hezhou was drained by them.

Since he knew, he couldn't ignore it anymore. Xueyan turned around and walked out the door. "I will help you get justice."

"Big sister, if you can't go out so late, you will be captured by spies who are considered enemy countries." As soon as you walked into the yard, a small hand grabbed Xueyan's corner of her clothes. "Those who are in the army are not reasonable. The lives of us people seem like ants to them. Don't provoke them."

"Don't worry, my sister will not be in danger." Xueyan leaned over and stroked the girl's head. "Your mother is not sick. She just hasn't eaten for a long time and is weak. She will get better after recuperation for a few days."

"Big sister, there are now patrol soldiers everywhere. If they are asked to catch you, they will be beaten to death. I can't let you take risks." The girl did not let go, but instead grabbed her tighter and insisted. "I'll take care of my mother, leave that hut for my sister. Let's stay here tonight. It's not too late to go after dawn."

"Okay." Xueyan stood up. It was still early anyway, so it would be better to take a break here. Then she followed the little girl into the straw hut next to her. The straw hut was even more simple, with only a dilapidated straw hut, without even a table, chair, and bench. The room was narrow and could barely shelter from the wind and rain. Xueyan stroked her head and asked softly, "Do you know where there is a garden nearby?"

The little girl thought seriously. "There is no garden, but I know there is a small hill behind it, and there are many wild flowers on it."

"Well, I understand. It's already late. Go back and rest. Your mother is still waiting for you!"

It was already late at night, and the girl returned to her mother. Xueyan sneaked out of the yard. These two thatched houses were built on the outskirts of the city, and behind them were large areas of abandoned fertile land. The land was dry and cracked, and it was indeed like a long drought and rain. The commander here was unethical and natural disasters were inevitable. Xueyan shook her head and sighed, worrying about the people here.

Not far away, there is a high and bulging hill. There are indeed large wild flowers growing on the hills. They sway in the wind under the faint moonlight, and look particularly peaceful in this chaotic world.

Xueyan did not pick those wild flowers, but used a delicate bottle to collect pollen from the stamens. The bottle originally contained half a bottle of mandala pollen. Mandala is the best medicine in the world, but it is extremely rare. Xueyan accumulated it for a long time and got half a bottle, but it actually came in handy today.

The small porcelain bottle was full. Xueyan covered the mouth of the bottle and shook it up and down to dilute the mandala pollen. It was still early in the morning when Xueyan returned to the small straw hut, sat cross-legged on the straw couch, closed her eyes and meditated, and gradually entered a state of meditation.

After a while, a sound came from the yard. Xueyan opened her eyes, stood up and pushed open the door. The little girl was standing by the well and trying hard to lift water. Her pink face turned red and fine beads of sweat had already oozed out.

"I'll help you." Xueyan walked over and helped her pull up the bucket.

"Mom can't sleep, so I'll make some water for her." The little girl was very sensible and used a broken bowl to scoop a bowl of water into the bucket and walked into the house.

"Wait a minute." Xueyan grabbed her, took out a small bottle in her arms, poured some potions into a bowl. She was once a medical immortal, Xueyan always brought some medicine for striking and recuperation on her body in case of emergency.

"This is..." The little girl looked at the water in the bowl in confusion, wondering whether she should bring it in for her mother to drink.

"This is medicine to regulate your mother's body." Xueyan put the medicine bottle in her hand. "When she is uncomfortable, she will go to a little in the bowl and take it under water to make her feel better faster, but she remembers to tell her to rest more on weekdays and not to worry."

"I understand, thank you, big sister." The little girl raised her head, looked at Xueyan with a sweet smile, and went into the house.
