Volume 6 Epilogue (4)
Indulgences were a controversial topic in the church, so Gregory treated them with great caution. He returned to the cathedral far away in Cologne and laid a thick stack of paper in front of him.
“In Matthew Chapter 4, verse 17, when God said, ‘You should repent’, his will is to hope that believers will devote their lives to repentance.”
“The word ‘repentance’ should not be understood as a confession and redemption under the auspices of the priests.
"But it does not mean only inner repentance, and without various external asceticism, it will be ineffective."
"The punishment of atonement should be carried out simultaneously with self-hate, that is, true inner repentance, until it enters the kingdom of heaven."
He dipped his quill in the ink box, staring at the stack of paper in front of him, thinking attentively.
"Inadequate piety and love will inevitably make the dying person feel extremely fearful, and the less love the greater the fear."
"This fear or horror is enough to constitute a punishment for purgatory, because it is a fear on the verge of despair."
"Therefore, the difference between hell, purgatory and heaven seems to be despair, fear and faith in salvation."
...
...
Thoughts were complicated, and inspiration was overflowing bit by bit. The night had deepened, and Gregorian lit a candle and wrote in the church that might have been the first to be said:
"To leave such a prophet: they preached 'peace, peace' to the believers, but there is actually no peace."
"Go away from such a prophet: to preach the 'cross, cross' to the believers, and not carry the cross yourself."
"No reason is used to eliminate doubts and disputes among believers, but only by authority suppression will only make the church and priests laughing stocks of enemies and make the majority of believers feel sad."
"Only by experiencing all kinds of suffering, rather than false guarantees of peace, can we be confident in entering heaven."
After finishing the last outline, Gregory counted it, and there were ninety-five items in total. He got up, carefully put the stack of paper into his arms, and then cleaned the table.
"Let's go." He said lightly to the priest who came outside the door, "It's time to meet the Cardinal who came from afar."
The church door was crowded with people, dressed in gorgeous clothes, either nobles or merchants. Gregory shook his head and signaled the other priests who followed him to stay where they were, and squeezed into the crowd alone.
"I do tell you that it will be difficult for wealthy people to enter the kingdom of heaven."
He said loudly. The group turned their heads and saw a guy in coarse clothes huddled among them, and couldn't help but look disgusted. But Gregory raised his voice further:
"I tell you again: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
"What are you talking nonsense!" A noble servant grabbed him and pushed out, "Even if you want to be drunk, don't come to this holy church!"
“—Matthew 19:22-23.”
Gregory finished speaking lightly, but his body had been pushed out of the crowd. Half of the people turned their heads disdainfully, while the other half looked at him like a monkey, covering their mouths and making a 'hissing' laugh.
"Don't make noise! Don't crowd!" A priest shouted loudly at the church door, "Prepare gold and silver coins first. There is enough quantity, and everyone has a share!"
Gregory's body disappeared from the spot, and then appeared next to the priest. Without saying a word, he raised his hand and overturned the stall in front of the priest, and the gold and silver coins in the money box rolled all over the floor.
"What are you doing?" the priest turned his head angrily, but when he saw Gregory's face clearly, he was stunned.
But Gregory said lightly: "'My temple will be called the temple of prayer', and you have made it a nest of thieves."
This is the 21st chapter of Matthew, which records the Son of God entering the temple of Bailong City and expelling all those who trade in the temple. The people who lined up didn't understand, but the priest was sweating profusely.
"Sir Gregory, please wait a moment," he said to Gregory, "I will report to the Cardinal your visit."
"I came here this time to explore the rationality of the Atonement Book," said Gregory, "I hope he will give me some advice."
The priest nodded again, then bowed and retreated into the church.
The church was filled with incense and smoke. A priest in red robe was sitting in the main hall, savoring tea.
"Gregorian Isfahan did not pursue his disobeying orders, but he became even worse and came to the door."
After listening to the priest's report, the bishop in red shook his head and waved his hand directly:
"Let him wait outside. I don't have time to see him."
The priest below was startled and whispered: "Sir, that's... the apostle."
"So what about the apostle? He will sooner or later be deprived of the apostle against God's will." said the bishop in the colour of the red, "and then, I will be the one who becomes the new apostle."
"Then, let me pay homage to the future Apostle."
In an instant, all the scenery around him changed, from the church in the countryside to the cathedral of Cologne. The bishop in the cardinal was still sitting in the hall, the bowl of tea was still in his hand, and the Lord's man had become Gregorian.
The bishop in red was stunned for a long time before he understood what was going on. The tea bowl in his hand fell to the ground and it was smashed, and the tea splashed all over the floor.
"Ger...Gregory, what do you want to do!"
"Oh? My magic has actually taken effect." Grecoli said lightly, "It seems that God still favors me now compared to you. Is it? The new Apostle who sells the Atonement Book."
"Gregory!" the bishop in the cardinal stared at him, "Do you have to interfere with the sale of the Atonement Book?"
"Because I can't see its necessity and justity," replied Gregory. "Isfahan declared that it was to save the world from the Black Death, but you and I know that the Atonement Book cannot cure the disease of the sick."
This chapter is not finished yet, please click on the next page to continue reading the exciting content behind! "It cannot cure the disease, but it can heal their souls. Everyone in the world is sinner, and before death, they need redemption."
"A believer who sincerely repented can obtain the right to be completely exempted from punishment even if he does not purchase indulgences."
"There are too few such believers." said the bishop in the cardinal. "Now, if you buy the Atonement Book sincerely, you can get redemption, which is the blessing of the church."
“Since the church can bless the believers to salvation, why not bless all believers hundreds or thousands of times a day?”
"Gregorian! The church needs money, and the empire needs money too!" The Cardinal slapped the table and scolded, "You go back and see the church I just stayed in. It was not the temple of God. It was clearly converted from the main hall of the evil gods in the local area! How many churches are there that have been in Almani for so long? "
"Are you really a cardinal? It seems that you are unwilling to continue to debate about indulgences. I have been trying to prepare a night's outline for guys like you, which is a waste of time."
Gregory's eyes completely lost gentleness. He approached the cardinal step by step, and every step he took out scared the cardinal trembled.
"But, in the Atonement Book, I have another word to say, that those who have been convinced that they are saved by purchasing the Atonement Book, and thus give up their repentance will be punished forever. And those who instigate them will be punished with a higher sin."
"Gregory!" the Cardinal broke his voice, "What do you want to do! I'm here, but the king of kings means!"
"I think it is inappropriate to use the title of King of Kings, and to use the same title with the great Son of God."
"Even if that's the case, Gregory, I'm also a cardinal! Cardinal of the same clan and sect as you! In the name of God, you can't touch me!"
"I didn't say I wanted to touch you."
Gregory walked up to the Cardinal and patted his shoulder gently:
"It's just to send you to the territory of the Star Moon Sect so that you can better sell the Atonement Stories."
However, at the moment when Gregorian was about to launch magic, a strong light penetrated the church window and shone on him. Gregorian's body froze immediately. He raised his head and stared at the light for a long time, as if listening to something.
Soon after, the light dissipated, and Gregory's mouth moved slightly a few times, then he lowered his head and turned his gaze back to the Cardinal.
"Change the destination a little, let's go back to Isfahan together."
“…Isfahan?”
Gregory touched his chest and confirmed that the ninety-five outlines were still in his arms.
“‘God will rise up and argue, stand and judge the people’.”
