Chapter 5 Asking for Tolls

Author: Stephen the Thunderman

With Xin Ciying's help, Liu Bang finally clarified the equivalence between "Han people", "Han land" and China.

The first time I felt this way was when I entered Xianyang, and the second time I felt like that when I ascended the throne.

This is the third time.

If the change from Liu to Zhao, or from Han to Song, made him feel a little uncomfortable.

So now, he is starting to get used to it.

On the other side, Xin Ciying, who helped the emperor recall the origin of the character "Han", also had mixed feelings in his heart.

If you go to Yunhan, Zhao will return to heaven.

The prosperous dynasty left in the history books by our ancestors is now as far away as the Milky Way in the sky.

The two of them had their own thoughts, but a bump in the carriage brought them back from their thoughts.

Yang Yizhong, the commander of the palace who had just participated in the Battle of Tuogao, stepped forward and said:

"Guanjia, we're here."

Liu Bang was very satisfied with his guard.

Although I don't know his identity, his burly figure alone gives people a very safe feeling.

Liu Bang jumped off the carriage and saw the Dali Temple sign hanging on the gatehouse on the right. In front of him was the Qiantang Gate.

But what puzzled him was that at this time, it was already dark, but the city gate was wide open, and there was an endless stream of people coming in and out.

this……

Anyway, the main purpose of his trip is to see the capital of the Song Dynasty a thousand years later... Maybe leaving the city gate open is just the habit of people here?

Although he was confused, but perhaps because he didn't want to see Xin Ciying's eyes looking like a fool, Liu Bang didn't ask any questions this time.

Instead, he said to Yang and Xin:

"Thank you, you two, just wait here. My old acquaintance is guarding Qiantang Gate here. There are too many of us, so don't surprise others."

Xin Ciying was still hesitant. When did the emperor become such an old acquaintance?

But when Yang Yili agreed immediately, he had no choice but to let the emperor go.

It is inevitable to add something to the daily life.

When the emperor walked away, Xin Ciying said coldly:

"Master Yang, it's okay for officials to do whatever they want, why don't you let him go!"

Yang Yizhong said nothing, just looked at Liu Bang's back without blinking.

"Old Wangtou! Old Wangtou! Your son-in-law is here to see you!"

Liu Bang shouted loudly, attracting passers-by's attention.

He shouted several times, but no one answered him.

Fortunately, there were other guards on the side, and one of them said:

"Since when did the old Wangtou have a son-in-law? Isn't his daughter working as an errand in the palace?"

Liu Bang said with a smile: "What happened today is that my father-in-law came to see me just after we got married... Brother, do you know where my father-in-law is?"

"You are so courageous! You dare to make fun of Lao Wangtou. His donkey temper may be so annoying!"

After saying that, the man pointed outside: "He is on duty outside, you can go find him yourself."

Qiantang Gate only checked people who came in, but not anyone who went out. Liu Bang thanked the man and walked straight out of the city.

Seeing that the emperor was gone, Yang Yizhong was fine, but Xin Ciying became anxious.

"Mr. Yang, what are you doing standing still? Hurry up and catch up!"

Yang Yizhong was still staring, but this time he replied to Xin Ciying's words:

"The official has an order, and we all need to wait here."

"Yu Zhong!"

Xin Ciying cursed angrily and wanted to leave by himself.

However, he was held firmly in place by the other people on the side.

"What are you doing? What do you mean, Mr. Yang?"

"Just now," Yang Yizhong finally turned his head, "the official issued a decree to us."

Xin Ciying couldn't even struggle, so he had to keep saying words like "complaint" and "memorial".

When Liu Bang walked out of the city, he recognized Lao Wangtou at a glance.

It's not that they look alike, it's just that this is the old man here.

At this time, the old man was holding a spear in his hand, and there were two monks standing in front of him. The older one was about the same age as himself, and the younger one was only about eleven or twelve years old.

There were Tubo monks first. Judging by their attire, they must be Han monks.

As he got closer, Lao Wangtou's voice reached his ears.

"There is no way to lead and there is no reason to enter. You can't enter this city!"

The little monk's voice was still a little childish: "But we didn't come last time and we got in, so why can't we get in this time?"

"It's the last time. The Qiantang Gate needs a guide at night! It needs a sign! If not, we won't let you in!"

"Unless..." Lao Wangtou chuckled and lowered his voice.

Liu Bang walked closer and heard him say:

"When I was in Bianjing, old man, I burned a lot of incense for Xiangguo Temple. When I met masters who came to beg for alms, I also made connections with them."

"These days, life is difficult for everyone. How about the two masters give me back my fate today?"

"Don't you like to say that good deeds are rewarded with good deeds? My good deeds, old man, are all thanks to you two."

Although he didn't understand what alms meant, the expression and tone on Lao Wang's face were familiar to Liu Bang.

This old boy is here to ask for tolls!

My father-in-law has gone too far.

If you meet a spy, do you want to pay someone to enter the city gate?

Liu Bang has always helped his relatives but not his relatives in such matters.

So he stepped forward to help and said: "What you said is right. How can there be free food in the world! Since we have to cross the city gate and have no certificate, we must be friends with each other!"

The three of them were all startled by Liu Bang. Lao Wangtou originally wanted to curse a few words, but when he heard him talking to him and wearing extraordinary clothes, he felt a little more confident.

"Did you hear what this husband said? It's not that I want to embarrass you, but the rules are the rules, don't break them casually."

The older monk's eyes had been fixed on Liu Bang since he came out, without moving even an inch.

He looked a little uncomfortable, and Liu Bang was about to curse, but he heard a sigh in his ear.

When he came back to his senses, he saw that all three of them looked as usual. The great monk clasped his hands together, bowed towards him and said:

"Amitabha……"

"If I hear this, I will subdue his heart."

"If a Bodhisattva has a form, he is not a Bodhisattva."

After saying that, he took out a booklet from the cloth bag hanging on his shoulder:

"The noble man has something to say, and the young monk should obey it. It's just that a monk has no wealth. This is the Lotus Sutra of Wonderful Dharma, handwritten by layman Yi An."

Lao Wangtou didn't understand the scriptures, and Liu Bang didn't understand them even more.

But what is better than Liu Bang is that Lao Wang has heard of the four words Yi An Jushi.

Just as he was about to reach out to pick it up, the young monk stepped forward and snatched the scripture from the big monk's hand.

"Master, no!"

The great monk whispered: "Daoji, don't mess around."

Seeing that the good reward in his hand flew away again, Lao Wang turned his head towards the young monk named Daoji and cursed:

"Little bald donkey! How can I allow you to act recklessly in this important city gate!"

As he spoke, a hand stretched out towards Daoji, grabbed his back, and lifted him up.

Lao Wangtou was about to slap the young monk twice, but he heard a "snap" sound, and a whip hit his hand. He couldn't bear the pain. He grabbed Daoji's hand and lost strength, and pulled Daoji away.

The whole person fell to the ground.
