Chapter 35: The Bad Seed

The seeds sown by the little sunshine in spring are always given high hopes by people.

The first person to notice something was wrong was Cao Defa. His seeds had been buried for more than half a month. When I checked today, there was no sign of germination.

Throw the soil away, and there are rotten seeds one by one inside. They are all bad seeds!

There were quite a few people who came to him today to report this matter, and some people thought it was because they didn't plant it well.

For farmers with many years of experience, this is unusual.

Father Wang looked at his breeding land, and there were gratifying buds growing on it. They were fat and strong, and they seemed easy to feed.

Wang Yongan took out the bamboo sieve he had made and carefully lifted up the young shoots with a piece of wood. These young shoots were to be transplanted into the plowed ground.

Each seedling is carefully and neatly stacked in the bamboo sieve.

In this way, these buds can slowly grow nice and strong.

"Uncle Wang, what are you planning to plant?"

A man digging in the field next door came over to take a look, and was very pleased to see the green sprouts.

"Uncle, your seedlings are growing very well. I don't know why my seedlings haven't grown. Uncle Wang, do you still have a lot of seedlings? If you can't plant them all, leave two for me."

There is one hole for each seedling. When raising seedlings, you will always scatter some more seeds and make up for the missing ones.

Mr. Wang is a cheerful person. After his family finishes planting today, he can just let people pick up the rest.

It wasn't until Father Wang came home that he heard that none of the seeds had germinated.

The villagers put the moldy seeds into bowls, and every household was the same.

Cao De was so worried that his hair turned white. He was more anxious than the other people in the village.

"Who plays the drums?"

When the yamen gatekeeper saw someone playing a drum, he stepped forward to ask with a knife on his waist.

"I want to see you, sir. I have something important to say."

Cao Defa and the villagers stood at the gate of the government office. He knew that he was complaining about injustice.

Seeing so many people, the yamen officer had no choice but to go and report it. It looked like it was a big deal.

"Sir, there are many villagers outside. They say they have something important to say."

The officials sent from Mengtang Town have not yet arrived, and now the county magistrate of Tongluo Town serves concurrently. The county magistrate's surname is Guo. He is old and would have retired in a few years.

Guo Pei'an asked the villagers to come in, sit on the chair handling the case, and look at the official documents submitted from everywhere.

"What do you have to say?"

"Sir, you see, these are the seeds we planted this year, and they are all bad."

Cao Defa handed over the seeds collected from each household.

Guo Pei'an looked at the moldy seeds in the bowl. They were all moldy and rotten, and none showed signs of germination.

"Sir, these are all seeds distributed to us by the county. We are all farmers who have been farming for many years. We have never seen anything like this. There is something wrong with these seeds."

Guo Peian was worried and asked the master next to him when the seeds were produced and where they came from.

Master Fan has not dared to act like a monster since his last master was killed, so he answered honestly.

"These seeds are all collected from the top, and sent by Da Sinong to the warehouse officials in each county. We collect them according to the household registration and distribute them to the people below. The warehouse officials still have the registration records to check."

Guo Pei'an nodded, feeling that there was nothing wrong with the procedure.

"But it's just the seeds in your village that are like this?"

"Sir, we don't know about other places. It's just that there is something wrong with the seeds brought back from our village."

Father Wang stood behind the crowd. Their family did not plant seeds distributed by the county this year. They planted seeds given by Fubao.

Now their family is incompatible with everyone, and some people have seen their good seedlings today.

"It should be that the batch of seeds sent to you is broken. Go to the warehouse official to register and get a new one."

The villagers are dissatisfied. This has not only delayed the golden period of raising seedlings, but now it is too late to plant them, and the harvest will be greatly reduced.

"Sir! Another group of villagers are coming outside!"

What happened today? Guo Peian called in the village representatives.

"Sir, look, this is a seed planted in our village, and it's bad!"

Exactly the same bowl appeared on the desk. This was no coincidence. Could it be that the products received from their county were all bad seeds?

This is a major matter related to people's livelihood. If it is a small village, the loss will be small, but if it is a county, it will be a big accident. If it is not handled well, you may be dismissed.

Guo Pei'an called the warehouse officials in charge. They should have left something to record.

After receiving the news, the warehouse official poked a hole in the sample grain bag and used a sampler to take out a bowl of seeds from the middle of the bag.

Although the seeds are a little shriveled, they are like this every year, and they have not sprouted in any year.

"Sir, this is the sample food we got."

Guo Peian took the seeds in the bowl and looked at them, but didn't see any difference.

He had never planted crops before, so he couldn't tell the difference between good and bad crops, so he had to give the seed bowl to these villagers. Their seeds were the same as those in this bowl.

Cao Defa took the sample seeds. These seeds did not look bad and were exactly the same as those they took home.

The villagers all took a small handful and examined it in their hands, and saw no big problems.

Father Wang looked at the seeds in his hand. These seeds seemed to be much lighter in weight, especially the vegetable seeds, which were darker in color.

When I bite it, I always feel that the seeds are strange, like dry powder.

"Master Guo, what kind of official business are you doing!"

When Guo Pei'an saw the man, he saluted.

"Master Qi, the lower official is dealing with the seeds. The villagers said there is something wrong with the seeds distributed this year. This is a sample grain, which is a batch of seeds."

Qi Peijue observed the rotten seeds in the bowl, and then looked at the seeds in the sample.

"Si Yun, give me your hidden knife."

You can't tell whether the seeds are bad by looking at the surface. You have to cut them open and look at the buds and embryos.

If the core is bad, you won't be able to grow good seedlings.

As the sharp blade passed by, the seed was cut open, the cross section was very clear, and the embryo could be seen clearly.

Qi Peijue took the seeds to the villagers and asked experienced people to see if there was anything wrong with the seeds.

"Ah! This seed is ripe! How can it germinate!"

There was an exclamation from the crowd! One stone stirred up a thousand waves.

What seeds are ripe! How is that possible?

This kind of cooked seeds does not mean mature seeds, but has been stir-fried by thoughtful people, frying the buds inside the seeds to death. Although it is not visible from the outside, it will not germinate.

Even Qi Peiyu was a little surprised, and his handsome eyebrows frowned slightly.

Guo Pei'an couldn't believe it, how could it be a ripe seed.

"Look carefully! This is of great importance."

Several experienced villagers studied the seeds back and forth and cut many more seeds.

They were sure and certain that the seeds distributed to them were either ripe, or half-ripe, unable to germinate at all, and would only rot when planted in the ground.

Si Yun went to Guo Pei'an and whispered something into his ear, saying that his master wanted to talk alone.

The villagers refused to let Mr. Guo leave. Today, they must be given an explanation. If we give them ripe seeds, won't they starve to death?

"I will investigate this matter thoroughly and will definitely give you an explanation tomorrow."

The villagers were panicking, explaining that they didn't know what was going on, that they couldn't grow any food, and that there would be a lean period in a few months. Vegetables had not been grown, and even the most hungry food had not been grown.

Isn’t this going to starve everyone to death?

"Everyone should be tight-lipped about today's matter, so as not to cause unnecessary panic. A serious crime that shakes people's hearts is a crime of beheading."
