Chapter 13
Should I go and see it?
[A skill will only be listed as intangible cultural heritage when it is about to become extinct.]
How realistic and how cruel.
The traditional construction technique of wooden arch bridges is a living fossil of Chinese bridge construction technology.
It represents the highest technical level of ancient wooden bridges in my country.
It embodies the wisdom of ancient working people.
Bridges built with this technology only exist in the world in an area of more than 200 kilometers around the border of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in China.
In the year when Nie Guangyi took the college entrance examination, Taishun, Qingyuan, and Jingning counties in Zhejiang Province, and Shouning, Zhouning, Pingnan, and Zhenghe counties in Fujian Province jointly applied for this skill as a World Heritage.
At that time, a total of 22 Fujian and Zhejiang wooden arcade bridges were packaged, and Wan'an Bridge was one of them.
The county annals of Pingnan County, where Wan'an Bridge is located, contain records about the bridge's past and present lives.
It was built in the Song Dynasty, with stone bases as piers and five pavilions on top. Xuzi was stolen and burned, and only one board remained (1708).
Reconstruction in the seventh year of Qianlong's reign (1742)
In the 33rd year of Qianlong's reign, it was burned again and a wooden bridge was built to replace it (1768).
It was rebuilt in the 25th year of Daoguang's reign (1845).
It was burned again in the early 20th century and rebuilt again in 1932.
In 1952, two arches at the northwest end were washed away by floods and were rebuilt in 1954.
For people who don't grow up in this place, if it weren't for the fire last night, the name Wan'an Bridge would have never been heard of.
Not to mention that people in other places don’t know it, even the aboriginal people in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces have probably never heard of it.
Even if you have heard of it, there are other bridges with this name in nearby counties and cities.
The four words "cultural relic protection" have always been a very ungrounded concept for most people.
However, for the villagers of Changqiao Village, Wan'an Bridge is a testimony that their ancestors have lived in this place for generations.
From birth to death, year after year, generation after generation.
Wan'an Bridge was originally a very beautiful and eclectic wooden arcade bridge.
The bridge house has 38 bays, 156 columns, and a total length of 98.2 meters.
This bridge adopts an unequal span design.
The longest arch span is 15.2 meters and the shortest one is 10.6 meters.
The piers are boat-shaped.
The bridge pavilion has double eaves and a double-slope roof with blue tiles.
A bucket-type wooden beam frame with cornices and shuttles.
On both sides of the 4.7-meter-wide bridge deck, there are benches in one continuous line, commonly known as "beauty benches."
In spring, summer, autumn and winter, no matter what season you pass by the bridge, you will see many people on the bridge.
Old people are chatting on it and children are playing on it.
On summer nights, the cool breeze blows on the bridge, which makes people reluctant to leave.
Walking onto this bridge is like walking into a piece of history.
People in Changqiao Village will unconsciously slow down when they get here.
Xuan Shi followed Nie Guangyi to Changqiao Village. The first thing he saw was a scene of many people sitting by the stream, crying silently.
"Why are there so many people sitting here crying? Are your grandparents so influential in the village?" Xuan Shi was very puzzled by this.
Crying loudly because of the death of an old man may not necessarily mean you are truly sad, but crying silently certainly does.
To what extent does a person need to be highly virtuous and highly respected to make the whole village cry silently when he is about to leave?
"You are overthinking. They are crying about the bridge, not my grandparents or anyone else." Nie Guangyi answered the question.
"Crying this bridge?" Xuan Shi couldn't understand even more.
"You have been driving just now, and many people have begun to upload videos of the Wan'an Bridge fire." Nie Guangyi pointed to his mobile phone and said: "If you click on a few, you will find that many people are filming the video at the same time.
Crying."
Xuan Shi thought for a while and said, "The people in the village should regard this bridge as a part of their homes."
"Maybe."
Nie Guangyi didn't know what kind of mood he should be in right now.
I don’t even know what kind of mood is right.
What if moods can be divided into right and wrong.
Should he be as sad as the others in the village, or should he take a little gloating?
Perhaps, no trouble is the most correct way to treat it.
"Then it's understandable how your grandfather feels about this bridge." Xuan Shi said.
"It's understandable." Nie Guangyi said with a wry smile, "My grandfather is the source of auspiciousness and the origin of the name of this bridge."
"Do you mind this matter very much?" Xuan Shi asked.
"I don't mind. There is a grandfather who is the inheritor of intangible cultural heritage. What should I mind?"
"So, Guangyi, if you want to be angry about being abandoned, it's your father who should be angry, right? Professor Nie doesn't mind the fact that he was abandoned, so don't be angry with your grandfather."
Nie Guangyi said straightforwardly: "I'm not angry with my grandfather."
"Then there's no need for you to be allergic to classical music, right?" Xuan Shi said, "It's like me to coffee. As long as the misunderstanding is cleared up, there will be no allergens."
"Why don't you understand? From the beginning to the end, I was only angry with my father."
Nie Guangyi asked slightly seriously: "Can you understand Professor Nie's behavior? He is an ominous person who was abandoned by this place. If he didn't have the whole mind to apply for a World Heritage Site, why would I do this?"
In 1954, Qiu Fuyan, Nie Guangyi’s grandfather, who had just turned 30 years old, devoted all his attention to the reconstruction of the arch.
He was so sleepless and forgetful of food that he even forgot that he had a son who was less than three years old. He wished he could live directly on the bridge.
Nie Guangyi's grandmother Qiu Qingyun has to take care of Nie Guangyi's father.
And I have to worry every day whether Qiu Fuyan will fall from a height of more than eight meters again.
In Grandma Qiu's view, being lucky once does not mean that you will be lucky forever.
Grandpa Qiu didn't think much about it.
Work until dark every day.
Go where the danger is.
Coupled with the rumor that Nie Guangyi's father was an "ominous person" that was spreading widely at that time, Grandma Qiu could not sleep well.
Maybe it's out of superstition, or maybe it's just because I can't take care of it.
Nie Guangyi's father was thus given to a family named Nie in Shanghai.
When Nie Guangyi was born, Grandpa Nie had already passed away.
Therefore, for Nie Guangyi, although his surnames are different, he has always had only one grandfather.
When he was young, he liked to stay in Changqiao Village during winter and summer vacations.
Speaking of which, Mr. Qiu taught Nie Guangyi his erhu.
"What did Professor Nie tell you?" Xuan Shi only had endless questions when he was with Nie Guangyi.
"My dad didn't say anything, but my mom has always been very disgusted with Changqiao Village. Every time my dad asked me to go there, my mom would be so angry that she wouldn't talk to me for several days."
"Then how did you know?"
"The conflict between my father and my mother completely broke out over the matter of changing my choice for the college entrance examination."
Before Xuan Shi could ask, Nie Guangyi opened the faucet and said it all:
"My dad lives in Changqiao Village and has five brothers, all of whom were born to my grandparents."
"These five brothers gave birth to a total of twelve children, all of whom were educated by my father."
"My dad promised to support them from elementary school until they graduate from college."
"With a burden as heavy as his, you can't find a good partner in Shanghai."
"Then he met my mother."
"My mother said that she can leave it alone before getting married. After getting married, the income will be the joint property of both people."
"You should stick to your own family first, not the family that doesn't want you."
"In addition to my uncles, the conditions are gradually getting better, and I am fully capable of providing education for my children."
"But my dad just wouldn't listen."
"My mother has always been very dissatisfied with this matter."
"My father is not short of money now, but if we go back twenty or thirty years, who can support a dozen children at once?"
"My mother is more tolerant and has never quarreled with my father in front of me."
"The day the college entrance examination notice came out, my mother was so angry that she divorced my father."
When Xuan Shi saw Nie Guangyi stopped, he quickly started to ask questions again.
"Is that why you became allergic to classical music?"
"I'm too smart about you."
After hearing the story, Xuan Shi could almost outline the real cause of Nie Guangyi's allergy.
…
Meng Xinzhi came out of the shower and saw Cheng Nuo standing at the corner of the stairs.
"Sister Cheng Nuo, why did you disappear while I was taking a shower? Didn't you say you were looking for a book to read in my room?"
"Something happened temporarily. I can't stand reading at the moment."
"What's wrong?" Meng Xinzhi asked concerned.
"My boyfriend just left."
"What happened to you two?"
"No, he said something happened at his brother's house and he had to rush there immediately."
"Sister Cheng Nuo, do you feel that you have been ignored, so you are unhappy?"
"I don't know what could make him so anxious."
"Didn't you ask?"
"I didn't have time. He said he would call me later."
"Then if that's the case, Sister Cheng Nuo should put her heart in her stomach first."
Meng Xinzhi held Cheng Nuo's hand and came downstairs.
I saw Zong Ji and Zong Yi gathering together and concentrating on watching videos.
Everyone was approaching, but the two people, the older one and the younger one, had not noticed it yet.
"What video is so good?" Meng Xinzhi asked Zongyi.
"It doesn't look good, my sister. I saw in the video that an ancient bridge was burned down."
When Meng Xinzhi heard that the ancient bridge was destroyed, she couldn't stay out of it.
"Which bridge is it?" Meng Xinzhi also walked over.
Zongji adjusted the position of the phone screen so that both daughters could face the screen.
"The video said that this bridge is called Wan'an Bridge. Then Uncle Yi's grandfather suffered a stroke because of this incident, so Brother Shi went back to his hometown with him."
Zong Yi complained to Meng Xinzhi a little aggrievedly: "My sister, you don't know how much effort I put into not telling Uncle Yi that I had to finish playing two erhu pieces before leaving."
"Well, Xiaoyi did the right thing." Mengxin praised her sister subconsciously.
His eyes never left the video playing on Zongji's phone.
After being praised by her sister, Zongyi excitedly said: "Sister, sister, sister, I have a question."
"What's the problem?" Conditioned reflex - standard answer plus head-touching.
"The news said that this bridge is a cultural relic. If so, has my sister ever dreamed about it?"
Seeing Meng Xin's hesitation, Zong Yi asked again: "Sister, sister, sister, do you want to go and have a look?"
