Chapter VII Exercising Powers of the Emperor

"The way to university is to be clear about virtue, to be close to the people, and to stop at the ultimate good."

...

According to Zhang Juzheng's teaching arrangement for Zhu Yijun, when Zhu Yijun was lectured in Wenhua Hall, he had to read "The Great Learning" ten times a day, read "Shangshu" ten times a day, and then the lecturer immediately gave a lecture.

Therefore, after Zhu Yijun arrived at Wenhua Palace, he started reading "The Great Learning".

Zhang Juzheng and the lecturers were all satisfied when Zhu Yijun read aloud, as if they were listening to beautiful songs of fairy music.

In their perception, the emperor can be the king according to their requirements for the Holy Lord and benevolent king, which can give them a great sense of accomplishment.

In other words, this will make them feel that the emperor has a sense of pleasure in controlling the emperor within their control.

Especially Zhang Juzheng, who had the ideal of teaching the emperor to become the king of Yao and Shun, seemed to see that his life value was being realized step by step.

Of course, he would not know that if the emperor student, who had worked hard to teach and had high hopes according to the development of the original history, would abandon all the high expectations of his teacher after his death, and would even almost obey the requests of the bureaucratic group to whip his body and abolish all his new policies. After that, he would have been willful and for more than 20 years because of disappointment with the civil officials, and became the lazy emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He was so lazy that he was even too lazy to replenish officials when even the six central government officials were vacancies.

This even gave a historical evaluation that "the Ming Dynasty actually died in Wanli".

It can be said that Zhang Juzheng would not have thought that the monarch who had devoted his efforts to educate him for ten years would become what he least wanted to see after his death.

Fortunately, Zhu Yijun in this life had the soul of later generations and had decided to be an Emperor Wanli who was different from that in history.

After Zhu Yijun finished reading "The Great Learning" and "Shangshu" here, the lecturers came forward to give Zhu Yijun a lecture.

Zhang Juzheng was worried that Zhu Yijun was not taught well enough, so he specially added a number of knowledgeable Confucian ministers to lecture in Wenhua Hall, and was waiting around Zhu Yijun for consultation.

Among them were Ma Ziqiang, Tao Dalin, Chen Shoubang, He Luowen, Shen Li, Ding Shimei, Ma Jiai, and Xu Jizhong, who were famous at that time, served as Japanese lecturers or attendants.

In addition, in order to let Zhu Yijun know how to be a good emperor more clearly.

Zhang Juzheng also specially presided over the compilation of a book "The Emperor's Map" for Zhu Yijun.

This book was presented to Zhu Yijun on December 17, 1960, by Zhang Juzheng, the lecturers, and selected eighty-one things that can be good and thirty-six things that can be used as a warning to the kings of all dynasties. According to this book, Zhang Juzheng personally taught Zhu Yijun the virtues and evil policies of the emperors of all dynasties, so as to achieve the goal of allowing Zhu Yijun to truly have the qualifications of a wise ruler.

Zhu Yijun's favorite class in his memory was the lesson "The Emperor's Paintings". Because this book is full of pictures and texts, with stories and vivid images, it can make him more interested in him when he was young. At the same time, as a master of power struggle in this era, Zhang Juzheng could also be incisive when teaching these emperors' minds and point directly to the key points, so that he could quickly absorb the important means that those who are the king should master.

Zhu Yijun knew that Zhang Juzheng had good intentions, so he was naturally willing to cooperate. In addition, he was indeed willing to learn some real skills from Zhang Juzheng, so he would not show impatientness when reading Confucian classics.

However, the "Imperial Archive Book", which made Zhu Yijun expectant and practical, will not be taught until almost noon. After learning Confucian classics, according to the process arranged by Zhang Juzheng, Zhu Yijun must first go to the warm pavilion to rest for a while.

At this time, the General Administration of Literature reported the seals of each government office to the imperial view.

At this time, ministers such as Zhang Juzheng would retreat to the west wing room to wait.

But if Zhu Yijun had any advice, he could summon ministers to the imperial court and let him report the memorials one by one to understand.

So from this we can see that Zhu Yijun is not a completely puppet emperor. He is also a decision maker of the Ming Dynasty in name, and is actually a person who participates in the highest power discussions.

"Call Mr. Zhang!"

After reading some memorials from the emperor, Zhu Yijun brought Zhang Juzheng in.

Historically, Zhu Yijun called Zhang Juzheng as "Mr. Yuanfu, Mr. Zhang". Yuanfu refers to his official position. Mr. Zhang expressed his intention to be his teacher. In short, he was very respected.

At this time, Zhu Yijun was still calling Zhang Juzheng in this way according to the original owner's memory.

After Zhang Juzheng entered the warmer pavilion, he bowed and asked Zhu Yijun to inquire, and asked, "Your Majesty, what's wrong with me?"

"Today's chapter is fine. There is only one thing that I have to tell Mr. Zhang Yuanfu that yesterday's lecturer who talked about "The Great Learning" was one word apart. I wanted to correct it, but I was afraid that the lecturer would be afraid of guilt, so I didn't mention it."

Zhu Yijun told each other.

Zhang Juzheng's heart skipped a moment, so he had to plead for the lecturer: "The lecturer is close to the heavenly power, and has minor mistakes, and hopes that the holy kindness will be tolerant." He also said: "If a person has a sin, he will be tolerant even if he is unintentional, he can be tolerated even if he is too serious."

"Of course!"

Zhu Yijun nodded. He didn't know if the lecturers deliberately missed the words in the lecture, or Zhang Juzheng deliberately did not mention it, but he knew that he had to put it forward to prove that he was listening carefully, and it was also a preparation for what he was going to say next, in order to make Zhang Juzheng understand that he was not so easy to fool, and that he was really making the Great Emperor of Ming.

Zhu Yijun said at this moment: "After the imperial examination ended yesterday, while completing the homework given to me by Mr. Zhang, Yuanfu, he also read the memorials, in order to know the way of governing and the virtues of officials in various places from the gentlemen's votes. At the same time, he also recorded some doubts and was preparing to ask Mr. Zhang today, so he would like to answer them!"

"Your Majesty is diligent in his studies, and the country is fortunate!"

Zhang Juzheng said this and hurriedly bowed again, and couldn't wait to say, "Please ask for your Majesty!"

Zhu Yijun asked Zhang Hong to hand Zhang Juzheng a piece of imperial notes he wrote.

After holding it in both hands, Zhang Juzheng glanced at the content on the imperial note.

When Zhang Juzheng saw this, his body trembled slightly, and then he glanced at Zhang Hong.

Zhu Yijun had already started to smile and said, "Xu Fan, Xu Kun, are you the son of the old gentleman Xu Qing and Xu Shao Shi?"

According to the "General History of Chinese Customs·Ming Dynasty Volume", the most noble title for the bureaucrats in the capital is Lao Jun, and Xu Jie was once the chief assistant of the Ming Dynasty. Now Zhu Yijun still calls Xu Jie this according to the original owner's memory.

Zhang Juzheng replied: "Yes! It is indeed the son of Mr. Xu."

Zhu Yijun nodded: "The Ministry of Personnel proposed to reply that the two people could be advised by Dai to give advice. After the old ministers were commended, Enyin was reinstated as officials of Taichang Temple and Shangbao. The vote was made possible. But what I don't know is why these two people were dismissed before this, so that they are now reinstated?"

Although Zhang Juzheng was a student of Xu Jie and naturally needed to take care of the Xu family politically, he ignored the fact that Xu Jie's second son had a very poor character and appointed him. However, when Zhu Yijun asked, he still had to reply truthfully:

"Report to Your Majesty, Xu Fan and Xu Kun were dismissed from office because the Governor of Heaven, Hai Rui, impeached him for occupying the land of the people and did not improve his personal morality. I think he had submitted a memorial to defend himself and returned it to the land of the people. He was very courteous, so he appointed him to make him an example in the world."

Zhu Yijun nodded: "Although that's the case, in my opinion, Xu Fan and Xu Kun are not suitable for use, mainly because considering that Mr. Xu is a student of Mr. Xu, and I am a student of Mr. Xu, so we naturally have to consider Mr. Xu more. I believe that Mr. Xu is over 70 years old and I really want his children and grandchildren to be filial to him."

"Therefore, I think it's better to let Xu Fan and Xu Kun continue to be filial at home!"

"These two are still young and have time to serve the country in the future, but there is no opportunity to serve the high court. If there is no one, then there will be no one. The state governs the world with filial piety. I ascend the throne in the year, and I should advocate be kind and filial piety. I wonder what the sir thinks?"
