Chapter 176 Supernatural powers are not fundamental

The monk Immortal Path was originally a king, but later became a monk and had attained the Arhat fruit. When he was on his way back to his country, his son mistakenly thought that he would take back the throne and sent someone to take his head. He was not afraid of death, but he could not bear to make his son create it. He killed his father and Arhat twice, so he wanted to use his supernatural powers to escape the murder, but he didn't know how to launch supernatural powers, and he couldn't even think of the term supernatural powers.

The Lotus-colored nun is the best magical power among the nuns. But when she was sitting in Alanruo's place, she met a pervert. Although she was already an Arhat who was destined to let her go, she asked. What do you love her? She said she loved her beautiful eyes. She used her magical power to dig out her eyeballs and sent her to him. The pervert said in anger that she played with magic tricks and beat her hard, so the Buddha made a ring , the nuns were not allowed to live in Alanruo's place.

The words of the Wheel King suddenly reminded me of the relationship between supernatural powers and karma mentioned by Master Sheng Yan. There are many examples like this in Buddhist scriptures. This does not mean that supernatural powers are not effective, but that supernatural powers are not omnipotent. , supernatural powers cannot defeat karma, Arhats are in their last life, and even in their last life, they must settle the last karma account, because 'fixed karma' will definitely be rewarded. If karma does not receive retribution, it will violate the cause and effect. Law, that's not going to happen.

Besides, although there are three types of supernatural powers, they are actually not two types of external reward and cultivation. The supernatural powers obtained through transformation can be included in the supernatural powers achieved. Therefore, the commonly referred to supernatural powers always say that retribution and cultivation are two types of cultivation. kind.

The supernatural powers obtained from rewards are the same in terms of function, but they are different in terms of initiation or use. Generally speaking, the supernatural powers obtained from rewards are available at any time, and are wise at any time, and the supernatural powers cultivated, Then the power must be activated by concentration before the use of magical powers.

Therefore, Arhats may have supernatural powers, but not every Arhats must have supernatural powers. It is said that all the Vinaya Medicines of Vinaiya are Volume 3, and there is a record: "At that time, the elders were perfect, had great wisdom, and did not practice supernatural powers." , and this thought: Although I eliminate all my troubles, I will not cultivate supernatural powers, and I will share all supernatural powers with the heretics,'

The one who "extinguishes all afflictions" is an Arhat. If an Arhat does not practice supernatural powers, he will not have supernatural powers. Arhats have the difference between wisdom and liberation and concentration and wisdom. Generally, if an Arhat who has wisdom and liberation does not practice supernatural powers, he will not have supernatural powers.

There is another example, which basically says that "Chuni Vinaiya Volume 2" contains a magical chani who has attained the Arhat fruit. One day, he begs for food along the street and passes in front of King Ashi's palace, and the king ministers Seeing her beautiful, she put her under house arrest, forced her to put on the costumes of the palace maids, put on the ornaments of the palace maids, and gave her to King Ashi. Seeing that the king was beautiful, she was defiled.

The next day, Lotus Seni flew into the sky in the palace with his magical powers and said to her: 'Sister, you have broken the demon of troubles, why not launch magical powers, escape from here, and suffer such a disaster,' so Teach her how to regulate her mind and how to cultivate supernatural powers. In a moment, the wonderful and virtuous Arhat Ni gained the power of divine feet and flew back to the nuns' monastic community in the air.

From these two examples, it can be seen that Arhats do not all have supernatural powers. Supernatural powers mainly come from meditation. Therefore, the great Arhats with supernatural powers are usually like ordinary people, and they cannot see hundreds of meters of experience. But about a hundred miles away, what you hear is not beyond the ordinary range, what you know does not exceed the ordinary field, and what you know is nothing more than the flesh and blood body. If you want to use supernatural powers, you must be able to achieve it.

At the same time, except that the supernatural powers of the saints will not be lost, the supernatural powers of ordinary people will be lost. Due to the strong greed, delusion and infatuation, they will lose their supernatural powers. Therefore, Devadatta taught him to rely on the ten-power Kashyapa. After practicing the first meditation and developing supernatural powers, he said because of his arrogant and unkind words: "What are the strengths of those ten powers Kashyapa and me? I always seek diligence day and night to obtain the first meditation power , It is my own request, and it is not related to the Ten Powers of Kasyapa, and that is, after speaking, I lose my supernatural powers.

There are also records in Buddhist scriptures that a long time ago, there were five hundred five-direction immortals flying over a palace in the sky and smelling the sound of palace maids playing music and entertainment games. Due to a thought of greed, five hundred five-direction immortals , it turned out like a bird with a forged feather, all lost their magical powers and fell into the palace. The king asked them who they were. They said they were immortals in the sky. The king ordered them to fly away again, but they could not fly anymore, so they were regarded as the king The thief did it.

When Shakyamuni was in the causal realm, he was a five-direction immortal and could instruct the gods to stop raining. After twelve years of drought, the princess of the local king brought many beauties to approach the immortals. The immortals were lustful-desire In his greed and joy, he actually lost his supernatural powers and it rained.

Also, the use of supernatural powers can only be realized after the cultivation of supernatural powers requires entering into samadhi. Even if the supernatural powers obtained are reaped, they will not work when major troubles such as greed, anger, and ignorance appear, such as The dragon's supernatural powers are obtained by reward. The dragon can change freely, but there are five times when the dragon cannot change: it is a dragon when it is born, a dragon when it is angry, a dragon when it is lust, a dragon when it is sleep, and a dragon when it is dead.

Although Buddhism is the highest level of supernatural powers, Buddhism is a religion that does not value supernatural powers. Christians always like to praise Jesus' miracles, such as Jesus turns water into wine, making deaf people listen, blind people see, and how many things can be made A few fish, a few full people, Jesus was able to drive away demons, Jesus could walk on the water, etc.

In fact, there are countless miracles in Buddhism. Except for Buddha, that is, the Buddhist monks, there are countless people who can have these miracles. However, Buddhism does not attach importance to these. Most Buddhist monks do not have them. Becoming a monk with supernatural powers is because their personality and their moral conduct (moral behavior) surpass that of ordinary people, so they become monks.

In the history of Buddhism, although there are many "divine monks". In the biography of the monks, the monks are also listed as one of the subjects, but the monks who are most respected by future generations and have the greatest influence on the future generations are not divine monks, but have learned and learned. A monk who has virtue and success, and has a good career, has a good effect. Although the role of supernatural powers can cause a sensation, it cannot affect future generations.

Buddhism is a religion of man rather than a religion of gods. Buddhism teaches Buddhism to teach people to be honest and start from the human nature. Therefore, when the Buddha was alive, he did not advocate relying on supernatural powers to save sentient beings, and even The disciples are forbidden from showing supernatural powers. The Buddha once said: "The monks should not show their divine powers before ordinary people. If they appear, they will be guilty of transgression of the Dharma."

(Basically speaking, all the miscellaneous affairs of Vinaya, Volume 2) The ninth chapter of the Vinaya Sutra says: "If you show supernatural powers to ordinary people, you will commit crimes... If you do not commit crimes, you will show your holy teachings and have a rare thing, and you will report yourself. Virtue may want to subdue the sentient beings transformed, but even if it appears, there is no sin,'

It can be seen that in principle, the Buddha did not allow his disciples to show supernatural powers, and the Buddha rarely used supernatural powers in the monastic community. When the Buddha traveled on earth, he traveled around in India from south to north, from north to south, and traveled around. There are very few people who can take advantage of the power of divine power on both sides of the Ganges River. Among the disciples, the Venerable Mulian often uses supernatural powers to save sentient beings and subdue the heretics. The Buddha rarely clearly asks him to use supernatural powers, but the supernatural powers he uses are just right. Otherwise, the Buddha would not allow it.

For example, in order to obtain a bowl hanging in the air, Venerable Bin Heads once showed his supernatural powers in front of ordinary people, and was scolded by the Buddha. Another time, the Lotus-colored monk appeared in front of the Buddha as the Wheel-Turning King. The Buddha also scolded him.

Although, in order to suppress the arrogance of ordinary people, to show the holy virtues of Buddha and the Buddha's Arhat disciples, and thus to save countless sentient beings, Buddha and Buddha's disciples will have supernatural powers. In order to save the heretic Kashyapa, he had ten kinds of supernatural powers. In order to subdue the six masters and heretics, he had great supernatural powers. In order to demonstrate the virtues of Bofu Shanlai (the great disciple), he used his supernatural powers to subdue the poisonous dragon in Mount Moro with his supernatural powers.

However, although Buddhism has supernatural powers, it will also use supernatural powers when necessary. Buddhism is not a religion that values supernatural powers, nor does it think that having supernatural powers is glorious. The greatness of Buddhism lies in its great wisdom and great culture , especially the great spirit of compassion, does not lie in mere supernatural powers.

According to the Buddhist scriptures, more than 2,000 years ago, there were still several Buddha's disciples living in the world. One of them was the Buddha's great disciple Venerable Kashyapa. He is now holding the Buddha's robe in his hands and living in seclusion. Jizu Mountain, after waiting for 5.67 billion years, Maitreya Bodhisattva was born in the world and was able to save money. Instead of the Buddha, he taught Maitreya Bodhisattva the robes that symbolize the Dharma to continue to preach the Dharma.

Another person who lives in the world is the Venerable Pintola Pola, commonly known as the "Long-browed Arhat". Venerable Pintola Pola Pola Pola was one of the sixteen great disciples of the Buddha in the Amitabha Sutra. Since the Arhat of the Fruit is a great Arhat, why does the physical body still live in the world and cannot attain the Nirvana without remaining support?

It turns out that when he was alive, he once showed his supernatural powers to his believers and won the praise of his believers. The Venerable came up with a whim and said to the believers: "Do you think it is magical to ascend to the sky? Now I will change it for you to see it, let you Open your eyes,'

After saying that, the Pinto Luopoluo Fallen Master jumped, soared into the air, and used all kinds of magical powers. The believers were stunned and exclaimed endlessly.

The Buddha knew about this and was very unhappy about the sensational behavior of the Venerable. He sent someone to call the Venerable and admonished him: 'My Buddhism is to use morality to influence others and use compassion to save sentient beings. Instead of using supernatural powers to confuse the public and confuse the people, today you illegally use supernatural powers to win the respect of believers. In order to punish you, you will punish you to suffer more in the world, and wait until you accumulate more merits in the future and repent. In addition to sin, you will be nirvana,'
