Chapter Thirty-Five: The Chicken Coop(1/2)

"Dad, but I heard that ghosts like ghosts, apart from mortals with obsessions, can only be found in alien beasts that have turned on their wisdom, right?"

You'er heard Lake help him ask the doubts in his heart, and stared at Buti with expectant eyes, waiting for his explanation.

"Yes, Lake, you are right. But apart from obsession, there are other ways to give birth to ghosts."

Buti looked around and took stock of where they were.

There was a large open space in front of the barn where the car was parked before, and the Far Traveler was parked there. The open space was not very big.

You can reach the dirt road that goes around the village after a few dozen steps. There is nothing worth mentioning about the road, it is just a dirt road that has been tamped by manpower.

Looking further along the dirt road, you can see three or four huge livestock farms. Bright white wooden fences (probably) surrounded a large area, and several tall houses with sloping roofs were built.

, and the dirt road is surrounded by the farmland that Kapa Village depends on for its survival.

Youer watched Buti observing the surroundings silently, not daring to speak.

Lake, on the other hand, was sizing up Youl, because he always felt that something was not right about this matter, but he just couldn't tell what was wrong.

"Let's do this, old man. Can you take us two to see the chicken that was bitten to death first?"

After thinking for a while, Buti made some guesses and decided to take a look at the killed chicken before making a conclusion.

"Okay, okay, of course it's okay."

You'er nodded and led the way again with a cane.

Buti followed Youl without saying a word, leaving Lake alone to stand there and think.

Suddenly, Lake realized that the You'er and Buti he was observing had left, and he quickly followed them.

It was a silent scene again. Lake didn't know why he always lost his usual agitation when he was with his father. The three of them walked on the dirt road leading to the livestock farm one after another. Occasionally, Youle would have to talk to Zai.

The villagers doing farm work beside the fields said hello and introduced the two of them.

Although they stopped in the middle, they quickly arrived at the livestock farm. The livestock farm in Kapa Village was divided into three parts: a pig pen for raising pigs, a sheep pen for raising sheep, and a chicken coop for raising chickens.

The sheep pen is the largest, and the chicken coop is the smallest. If the sloping roof houses of the same size are not included, the chicken coop is not even one-third as big as the sheep pen.

Before Lake even entered the chicken house, he reached the fence outside the chicken house and smelled the smell coming from inside the chicken house.

He was already mentally prepared, but he was still dizzy from the stench, so he had to stand there with his hands on his nose and his mouth covered.

Unable to resist, he had no choice but to give up. Any further step would be a dead end.

Lake's appearance was spotted by Buti who happened to turn around. He frowned, turned around and walked outside the door, looking at him calmly.

You'er entered the chicken coop and found that the two people behind him were missing. He poked his head out of the chicken coop and saw the two people standing at the door of the fence looking at each other. He had no choice but to speak first.

"Mr. Buti, are you still coming in?"

Buti heard Youl's call and glanced sideways at him. The chicken coop was not very bright, and only the two skylights on the top could shed some light.

But as evening approached, the pale yellow sunset could only illuminate a small area in the chicken coop, so except for the upper half of Youl's body that was visible outside the door, the lower half of his body seemed a little blurry.

"Lake, let's go! Come in with me!"

Buti stared into Lake's eyes and said in a serious tone.

Lake was a little frightened by Buti's eyes. Isn't it because he saw the chicken coop as dirty and smelly, so he didn't want to go in? Is it so serious?

"Which one? Are you two really here?"

At this time, Martin came over from nowhere, holding a wooden bucket in his hand. The water in the bucket swayed as Martin moved forward.

"Mr. Martin? Aren't you the administrator of the farm? Why are you still doing this kind of work?"

Lake saw that Martin must have been cleaned up, and the smell of his body was much less than when he saw him before. Of course, it could not be ruled out that it was because they were right next to the chicken coop, and the smell from inside the chicken coop was overwhelming.

Martin's stink.

"Since uncle has brought you here, I won't hide it from you, because this matter is quite serious. Uncle plans to wait until the time is over before telling the villagers. Currently, only a few people know about this matter."

Martin smiled sheepishly.

Youer saw the three of them talking at the door, and had no choice but to use the small trailer that usually transports feed to pull out the dead chicken. Martin saw his uncle walking out carefully with one hand on crutches and the other dragging the small trailer, and hurriedly

Putting the bucket in his hand on the ground, he strode forward and took the small trailer from Youer's hand.

When Buti saw Youl dragging out the bodies because he couldn't wait any longer, he glared at Lake again and slapped Lake on the shoulder.

"What are you still looking at? They've dragged you out, why don't you come with me?"

"Why do you have to let me go?"

Lake saw that people were taking out their things just for him, so he was too embarrassed to stay outside any longer, so he had to turn his back and take a deep breath, as if saying goodbye to this air-filled world, he bravely walked in

Inside the fence.

The smell of stewed leftover rice flooded into Lake's nose again, causing him to cough crazily.

He felt like the smell was alive, wandering around in his nose and mouth. When the cough became uncomfortable, he retched twice, but it felt better.

Looking at Lake like this, Buti shook his head, took out his pipe from his pocket, and lit up the Qingxin grass silk.

A faint aroma of green grass spread from his pipe, and the three people around him felt that their brains were much clearer. Especially when Lake smelled the scent of the grass, he felt like he had met a savior, so he came closer to Buti and smoked wildly.

A few puffs of smoke.

"Better?"

Buti didn't put much shredded grass into the pipe, and the smoke produced by burning Qingxin grass dissipated quickly.

"Well, much better."

Lake responded awkwardly.

"Now that you are feeling much better, go and see how these chickens died."

Buti pointed to the four dead chickens neatly arranged on the small trailer with his pipe. After that, he closed his mouth and stopped talking. He just smoked the still burning ashes.

Lake moved his limbs, as if adjusting his condition, and then looked down at the small trailer next to Youl. The small trailer was made of wood, and it could be seen that it had been used for a certain period of time.

The surface of the potholes was already glowing, as if someone had applied some oil on it.

This actually reminded Lake of Dongqi Continent's saying that this wood was "coiled".

"Cough, cough."

Buti looked at Lake standing blankly in front of the small trailer, unresponsive, and knew that this guy was probably thinking about something unrelated.

"ah?!"

Lake realized that he was here to observe the situation. He looked at the three people standing around him and nodded sheepishly, and then he knelt down and observed the killed chicken.

"It's different from the chickens I've seen at the market. The colors of this chicken are colorful and rich."

Lake picked out the chicken's feathers with his hands.

"This kind of pheasant is more difficult to raise than ordinary domestic chickens, but the meat quality is much better, so the price is also more expensive."

Martin explained.

"Most of the deaths of these chickens were due to lacerations on the neck, and other parts of the body were also missing to varying degrees, especially the chicken's chest."

Lake took a step back so that the three people around him could see. Except for the mutilated necks of the dead chickens on the small trailer, all the feathers on the chest of each dead chicken had been torn apart.

The skin and muscles on the chicken's chest were all torn apart, and all the internal organs that were supposed to be inside were eaten clean.

"However, we all know this. Every autumn, wild wolves and bears come to the village to look for food. We have also seen domestic animals that have been eaten by them. So we also have dogs by the square in the village. What's the problem with outsiders?

We can spot all kinds of wild animals.”

Youl did not speak but stood silently, while Martin beside Lake was a little unconvinced. What Lake said was obvious.

"The soul was sucked out of their bodies."

Buti, who had been silent until now, expressed his observations.

"The soul was sucked away? Was it that ghost that did it?"

Martin seemed a little scared and spoke with a trembling voice.

"Do you think this chicken carcass is any different from an ordinary carcass?"

Buti pointed at one of the dead chickens with his pipe.

"I don't see anything different? Isn't it just a little white?"

Lake put his head up and examined it carefully despite the overwhelming rotten smell. There was no change except that the feathers were a little white.

"Well, I probably understand what Mr. Buti said." Martin somewhat understood, "No wonder, I said all the flies in the chicken coop disappeared. It turned out to be scared."

"Yes, although these little bugs have no intelligence, their sense of danger is sharper than ours."

Buti blew out a smoke ring and spoke slowly.

"Oh I see!"

After listening to the conversation between Martin and Buti, Lake realized the difference between the dead chicken carcass and the ordinary carcass.

In the past, there were no flies or mosquitoes hovering around the chicken, duck, fish and so on that I saw at the market. This was because the market was very hygienic, and the vendors doing business in the market would also take the initiative to drive away flies and mosquitoes for the sake of good business.
