Chapter Thirty-Six An Unexpected Joy

The evening breeze retained the heat of the day and made the carved wooden windows rustle.

Pei Shu leaned out, closed the window that was blown open by the wind, turned around and said,

"Although it is convenient to be appointed as an official, it is still inferior to others. He is both despised and criticized. The most important thing is that it will hinder his promotion in the future. My second uncle does not want to be a county magistrate for the rest of his life."

The amount of information in just one sentence was a bit overwhelming, and Pei Yuanchang said in a daze: "The official position my nephew mentioned is a magistrate in charge of a county, not a magistrate, a historian or something like that?"

In order to further put power in the hands of the royal family, the imperial court will appoint some officials from the capital to serve as "county magistrates" in important counties with special geographical locations or good economies.

Therefore, the county magistrate has a higher official position than the ordinary county magistrate.

Pei Shu smiled and said: "The starting point is low, and promotion is slow."

Pei Yuanchang's confused mind became clearer: "I am not an official, but I am an appointed county magistrate. Do I have that qualification?"

Pei Shu asked with a smile: "Isn't the second uncle the person who held the title of Juren in the third year of Zhenyuan?"

Pei Yuanchang nodded unconsciously.

Pei Shu: "Then you will be eligible for the vacancy."

Pei Yuanchang was stunned for a moment: "That's right."

However, not all candidates who pass the imperial examination can become officials. They have to have connections and wait for vacancies to be filled, and usually they can only be awarded official positions below the county magistrate.

Juren who can be directly awarded the post of county magistrate must either have a profound background or have smoke coming out of their ancestral graves.

In my whole life, I have never been able to put in place a candidate who is in short supply.

"Can I do it?" Pei Yuanchang said unconfidently.

The huge pie really fell on my head, I can't believe it.

"Why not? My second uncle has real talent and practical knowledge, and he is not a fool." Pei Shu said with a serious expression: "As long as I work hard and make achievements, and have a solid political performance foundation, I will work in the Imperial Capital.

I will protect you and keep it safe from anyone to suppress you.”

"Don't you think the second uncle wants to stand out and fight his way to success with his own strength?"

"That's natural!" Water flows to lower places, and people go to higher places. Now that I have the opportunity to become an official, I definitely want to climb higher!

With her intention clear, Pei Shu said: "Let me take care of the rest. Second uncle can go back and prepare for the release."

Saying this is like picking something out of a bag.

Pei Yuanchang felt as if he was stepping on clouds, and walked toward the north courtyard in a daze.

The original intention was to please the female monarch, and he was planning to find a job in the clan, and even made plans to become a bookkeeper. However, after much deliberation, he actually found a job as a county magistrate.

Illusive and unreal.

Under the verandah of the north courtyard, a beautiful woman wearing a lotus-green gown was looking out with her head raised.

Seeing Pei Yuanchang appear outside the door, Dong Qiao greeted him with a smile in his eyes.

Walking all the way from Xi Lan Ju to the North Courtyard, Pei Yuanchang's mind was almost clear again, and nothing could be seen on his face.

Meeting his wife's expectant eyes, he silently raised his arm and signaled to enter the room.

The couple entered the house together. After Pei Yuanchang sat down, Dong Qiao poured her husband a cup of herbal tea and then asked warmly: "How is it? Is it going well?"

Pei Yuanchang took it and drank it to the end, not caring much about the tea spilling out.

"Drink slowly, be careful not to choke when a whale sucks a cow's drink." Dong Qiao originally wanted to joke, "You sat here for a long time, maybe the lady didn't give you a sip of water," but it didn't feel right after thinking about it.

If these words get out and are exaggerated by an unpredictable person, the joke between husband and wife may be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the queen.

Over the years, they have encountered obstacles and setbacks, and have been disliked by many people. The couple has become more cautious in everything they say and do.

Why didn't Pei Yuanchang understand? With a moved expression, he held his wife's hand and said, "We have wronged you all these years, and we have to endure all the hardships..."
