668 overboard

It’s about ten kilometers from the city center of my hometown to a small town. You can either take a car or a boat. Because the boat ticket is nearly half cheaper than a car, many farmers in the town choose to take a boat. Most of these boats have two floors.

, engine-driven ones are operated by private contractors and are responsible for their own profits and losses, so serious overloading has become a normal phenomenon.

One morning at the end of December 1999, in foggy weather, a boat like this set out from the city with people on it and arrived on a section of the river not far from the town. This section of the river has always been regarded as a dangerous journey by boatmen, because Hanoi

The rocks were scattered all over the place and the current was very fast, which was extremely unfavorable for sailing. The captain's wife was standing on the right side of the bow at that time. As a result, the hull of the boat hit a huge rock. It shook violently and she fell into the river.

The captain's cockpit is at the front of the upper floor, so you can see it clearly. When the captain saw his wife falling into the river and struggling, he immediately asked the helmsman next to him to steer the boat, and he jumped into the river to save his wife. The story goes on

Up to this point, it was originally normal, because the temporary replacement helmsman was very skilled and had no problem steering the ship independently. But the problem was for the passengers on the ship.

When the people on the boat saw that the captain's wife had fallen into the water, and the captain jumped in to save her, they immediately rushed to one side of the boat to watch the fun. The boat was only approved to carry fifty people, but that day it actually carried more than eighty people, all seated separately.

There were two floors, upper and lower. The ship was originally overloaded and the center of gravity of the ship was unstable. Now all the passengers on the upper and lower floors rushed to the right side of the ship and leaned down to watch the excitement. This added fuel to the fire and made matters worse. The ship immediately capsized.

, upside down on the river.

There was a male passenger who was originally sitting on the upper floor. When the boat turned over, he was thrown out and fell into the water. He was beaten to pieces, but he was not injured and was not detained by the boat.

In the water, he swam up to the river bank in a panic, looked around, and saw several families halfway up the hill on the river bank, so he shouted for help at the top of his lungs.

Unexpectedly, as soon as he started calling for help, his voice was covered up by the sound of firecrackers on the mountainside, so he hurriedly ran up the mountain. When he arrived at those families, he discovered that the old man of one of them had just passed away in the morning, and they were all setting up a dojo in the backyard.

, asked people to chant sutras for salvation, and then set off firecrackers. Since they were all in the backyard, with their backs to the river, of course they couldn't see the tragedy that had just happened; but the mountain was not high, so the cries for help on the river bank could certainly be heard.

, coincidentally, they lit firecrackers just when the male passenger started calling for help. As soon as the firecrackers went off, you couldn't even hear the people standing in front of you, let alone the shouts from the people down the mountain?

When these families heard that there was an accident in the river, they immediately rushed down the mountain to rescue people. When they arrived at the river, they saw some passengers climbing up the bank. When the survivors saw the reinforcements arriving, they all shook their heads and sighed, saying it was too late.

Everyone else has basically disappeared.

But sigh after sigh, we still have to save people. A few people with good water skills dived under the boat and rescued a few more people. They said that the others might have been washed away by the water and there was no hope of survival.

People were talking about it, saying that those people were destined to have an accident. Otherwise, why would they encounter people setting off firecrackers at a dojo halfway up the mountain without hearing any sound? But the ship was seriously overloaded, and the passengers didn't have any sense of safety. I'm afraid this was the reason.
