34. Eternal Life
Darwin Harris has a good name and a good family.
He lives in Venus, a vast plain: the low area of the Etalanta Plain.
Like most conservative Venus citizens, the Harris family has barely left the million-square-kilometer plain.
This also makes local citizens trapped in the local area for a lifetime, and at the same time they are more conservative.
As one of the two planets first colonized by humans, Venus's atmosphere is far less open than Mars. This may also be related to the vastness of Venus' land and sparsely populated people. It also has to do with its sun rising or setting every 100 days.
The slow rotation speed of the planet makes the humans above it communicate slowly.
Darwin was born on such a planet and a family. The pastures and grasslands at home were enough to allow his son to inherit his father's business and live a lifelong life without worries about food and clothing.
However, facts are always somewhat different from imagination.
His parents immigrated thirty years ago. For citizens who lived in this area and had a very slow pace of life, thirty years ago was about the same as thirty days ago.
It was a new neighbor who had just moved in.
So when he was old enough, Darwin started to go to elementary school and found that there were no enthusiastic children in the school.
Those children who had known long ago squeezed Darwin out. Those girls who had known long ago were forbidden from getting close to Darwin in the small circle.
Children are always like this. There is no distinction between good and evil, good and bad. If you do anything, you will only think of two things: "This is fun, that is not fun."
Isolating a child from another place? This game is great.
So Darwin spent his elementary school life alone.
Of course his parents knew this kind of thing, but they knew it better that it needed to be solved by themselves. The intervening of their family would only make things worse.
When he arrived in high school, he thought things would improve. He would have friends who could be with each other and meet girls he liked.
In the end, he found that he was still thinking too much.
Darwin began to be bullied.
Everyone is born equal and should not be deceived by this eighteenth-century work, a sentence in the Declaration of Independence. In fact, in the era when this sentence was born, slaves were legal. Population transactions were protected by the government. Women did not
Human rights.
However, after the 20th century, humans have been working hard in this regard.
After hundreds of years of education evolution, human beings have just emerged from this bullying of similar people. But there are always some minor problems, such as Darwin's classmates and their tutoring is not very good.
So he was bullied so badly in high school that he began to never communicate with anyone. He spent his room all day and lived on games.
Then 10 years passed.
On this day, at the age of 25, he had become a federal adult male. His grades made him unable to receive college education. One day, he heard that an organization called the Immortal Society was recruiting members. This was posted by someone in his high school classmate chat group.
.
Of course he won't attend.
Only two weeks later, he received an interview notice, and Immortal will notify him to take a space elevator to an address in the floating city of the atmosphere at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
There is no doubt that it was his high school classmates who signed up for him.
They are not for Darwin's goodness, they just often do this kind of thing, such as putting Darwin's contact information on same-sex dating websites, and signing up for Darwin's school to explore 10,000 meters underground.
He wouldn't have gone, but because something happened last night, he decided to attend the interview.
He wants his parents to be proud of him.
...
"That's why I hate coming to Venus."
A petite blonde woman in a dark gold dress was sent away and complained in the interview table. "Old-handsome and self-righteous, thinking she was a noble shepherd."
After saying that, she rolled her eyes to Joyce on the side: "Don't remind me, I know this doesn't mean everyone. But please let me vent."
Owen on the other side shouted, "Next, Darwin."
The door was pushed open, and a young man with a somewhat restrained and small pace walked into the room.
He sat on the chair and only dared to let his butt get a little bit of it.
Irving looked through Darwin's delivery information and Yang Yang: "Isn't this what you wrote?"
Darwin's body stiffened and his answer was extremely difficult: "My classmates like to tease me."
"I understand." Owen closed the information and raised his chin. "Then you just leave."
Darwin nodded stiffly and dragged his heavy steps towards the door.
His hand held the door handle, opened the gap, and then closed it again.
Darwin mustered up the courage to ask, “Can I join forever… Will it be?”
Darwin, who forgot his name, was nervous and about to faint.
"It's the Immortal Church." Owen reminded.
“Can I join the Immortal Society…?”
"Yes." Owen put the information aside. "Tell me, why do you want to join the Immortal Society?"
The woman who had complained before did not seem to be mocking.
Darwin walked back to the chair and didn't sit down. That would make him even more nervous.
“I want to help my parents.”
Owen nodded: "Most of us think so, are there anything else?"
"Can I tell a story?"
Irving made a gesture of asking for help.
Darwin tells the story of being bullied from childhood and becoming autistic and introverted.
He always wanted to escape from reality. Until late last night, Darwin played augmented reality game in his bedroom. There was a level that was difficult and he couldn't get through anyway.
I was angry and anxious, but my parents didn't dare to speak loudly when they were sleeping next door.
Until one time finally passed smoothly, the joy of overcoming the difficulties made him yell with all his might.
My father was awakened by the shouts and rushed into the house. Seeing that his son was just playing games, he complained: "I have to work tomorrow."
Darwin apologized, and he was still excited to show off: "I just successfully landed in Normandy and suffered only a little bit of minor injuries!"
After saying that, he calmed down. His father didn't play games and didn't know what Normandy was.
But this did not prevent the father from being happy for him. He shouted outside the bedroom: "Fuck, my son is logged in Normandy!"
"Good son." The mother's shout came from the other end of the room.
After that, they went back to sleep, and Darwin also slept.
When he woke up the next day at noon, he saw a cake in the kitchen with the words: "You have landed in Normandy."
"They want to be proud of me." Darwin's face burst into tears, his swollen eyes revealed firmness. "So I want to make them proud of me."
The blonde woman said, "So you are a coward, damn home, Luther, no one cares about your trash?"
"…Yes." Darwin sucked his nose and rubbed his sleeves against his eyes. The buttons of his sleeves cut across his eyes and left a red mark. "Not now."
"A man with courage."
Joyce nodded and said.
