Chapter 1 Escape from the Famine

In the sixth year of Yuanping, the late emperor died suddenly. The new emperor was unkind, killed his loyal ministers in vain, and imposed tyranny. He also suffered from successive natural disasters, which left the people hungry and homeless.

Famines, wars, and floods have left the land with no harvest, and people are selling their sons and daughters, leaving people in mourning everywhere. There are many refugees fleeing famine on the official roads, dressed in rags, like beggars.

Amid the crowd, there was a group of gray carriages and horses moving forward slowly.

This is the convoy of the Gu and Li families. The two families are close friends of life and death. Now they are in trouble and are fleeing together.

The Gu family is a first-class noble family, and the Li family is a first-class royal family. Both families are families of military commanders with great military exploits.

The loyal ministers who have been passed down for centuries as military commanders were feared and ostracized, and met the sad end of being killed by random swords. The family members of officials who used to be high and mighty in the past became pheasants in distress. Under the protection of their clan members, they fled in a hurry, and only the direct descendants remained.

Get rid of these old, weak, lonely and widowed people.

Three men and one woman rode on horseback to protect the carriage as it moved forward.

"Where can I rest for the night?"

The young man with beautiful peach blossom eyes is the eldest son of the Gu family, Gu Lei.

He turned his head and glanced at the bright girl next to him, his eyes were gentle, and his fair and handsome face was a little red under the scorching sun.

"It's easy to hide in the mountains if you go into the mountains. If you let these refugees follow you, you'll be in trouble."

Li Yu, the eldest daughter of the Li family, is particularly outstanding in martial arts, has a tomboy-like temperament, and is sassy and neat.

While they were talking, a little beggar of eight or nine years old followed the carriage and begged the women in front of the carriage window.

"Good Samaritans, please give me something to stutter."

The little boy raised his hands, his eyes full of pleading. He was also very thin, and his outstretched arms were so thin that they seemed like they could be broken with just a little force.

On the carriage were Li Wang, the eldest daughter-in-law of the Li family, and her cousin Li Xu, as well as Gu Lei's mother, Gu Lin, and her cousin, Gu Xin, mother and son.

Sitting by the window is Lin Yue, Gu Lin's niece.

Lin Yue took out a sesame seed cake and was about to give it to the boy. He looked so pitiful.

"No."

Li Yu saw it with his sharp eyes and scolded him.

Lin Yue shivered in fright and took her hand back.

The little boy lowered his head in disappointment.

Li Yu took a few steps forward on horseback, approached the car window, and glared at Lin Yue fiercely, "Are you looking for death? Don't give food to anyone."

"I think he is pitiful. A piece of cake... doesn't matter."

"What do you know? You are not allowed to give it."

Li Yu scolded in a low voice.

He grabbed a bamboo cup, took off his water bag from the carriage, poured a glass of water and handed it to the boy.

"Drink it, squeeze it down, you won't even be able to eat it."

Li Yu looked at the thin boy. The boy had obviously been hungry for a long time. He looked big in head and small in body, and was as thin as a bean sprout.

But she remained unmoved, her eyes cold and unwavering.

"It's just a pancake. You are too cruel. You are just a poor child."

Lin Yue muttered angrily.

I just gave the child a pancake. Isn’t that okay? We still have money and are not short of money. We can also buy food, but it’s not for everyone.

"Shut up."

Li Yu glared at her angrily.

"Okay, stop arguing and making people laugh. Yu'er, you are too strict. It's just a bite for the children. We don't feed everyone, so there's no need to make a fuss."

Mrs. Gu Lin was also a little displeased, as this child was too cold-hearted and hard-hearted.

Wang glanced at Gu Lin, pursed her lips in displeasure but said nothing.

Li Yu didn't reply, just watched the little boy drink the water and gave him the cup.

"Fetching water for you."

"Thanks."

The little boy thanked him softly and slowly left the carriage.

In contrast, they still have food to eat, and their lives are obviously much better than those of the refugees.

The carriage continued to move forward for more than an hour. There were many refugees behind it who could not keep up with the speed of the horses. They gradually distanced themselves. There were still a small group of people following the carriage. There were about ten people, of whom the majority were men and women.

Be in the minority.

The little boy also followed the carriage.

An old man's voice came from the carriage behind him, "Yu'er, stop and have a rest. The horse needs some water and some fodder."

Mr. Li, the head of the Guogong Mansion, is Li Yu's biological grandfather.

Li Yu took a look and chose a flat shade of tree to stop the horse.

"Have a rest here for a while. Don't take out the food. Eat in the carriage and don't come out."

"oh."

"I'm going to fetch water and take a look around."

"I'm going to check some firewood."

The middle-aged man dismounted and prepared fodder and water for the horse.

This somewhat elegant man is the eldest son of the Li family and the eldest son of the Duke of Guo. He and his first wife, Mrs. Wang, have two brothers and sisters, Li Rui and Li Yu.

"I'm going for a convenience and checking to see if there are any prey."

Li Rui and Gu Lei also left and walked into the woods.

Li Rui, the eldest son of the Li family, is a calm and upright man.

When the little boy saw them leaving, he slowly came over to Lin Yue and begged softly.

"Beautiful sister, please give me something to stutter. I'm so hungry. I haven't eaten in two days."

"Where are your parents?"

"Dead."

Lin Yue's face showed some struggle. She looked back at the direction Li Yu left, turned around, got into the carriage, took out a bag, took out a pancake and handed it to the little boy.

"Eat quickly, don't let anyone see you."

The little boy felt as if he had found a treasure, his eyes suddenly lit up, he grabbed the pancake, wolfed it down and stuffed it into his mouth.

At this moment, a dozen refugees who had been hanging behind the carriage suddenly rushed forward in a swarm.

"Don't grab it, go away, help!"

Lin Yue was so frightened that she screamed.
