Chapter 7 La Roche City (1)

On March 22, 1794, the officer on duty in the city of Laroche, Lieutenant Neck, heard the gunshots from the wilderness. He thought it was a rebel who rushed to the city wall and looked around, but found that a general of the Republic was coming, a lieutenant general and his guards. The captain concluded from the general's appearance that the mountain general whom he had long been expected to have arrived, and hurriedly ordered the city gate to open, lower the suspension bridge, and let the general and his guard camp enter the city.

While watching the shouts of the soldiers coming, General Andrew followed the suspension bridge and entered the city gate. He had not heard the soldiers cheering like this for a long time. Andrew should have been extremely excited, but he couldn't lift his spirits. The people around him didn't understand, but Dawu knew the reason. He approached the general, muttered a few words in a low voice, and then flashed aside in the general's surprised gaze.

"Report to General Andrew, Lieutenant Neck of the Vandai Legion greets you and welcomes you!" Neck ran to the inner city and happily welcomed the new boss.

But the lieutenant was disappointed. Andrew just looked at him coldly and didn't say anything, and did not give an order. After simply replying to the military salute, he jumped off his horse, walked towards the city wall as if no one was around, and stood on a high place to patrol.

The defense of Laroche City is pretty good. The city walls more than 10 meters high are very strong and solid. The gunners are very experienced. From their choice of the location of the artillery, it can be seen that their firing firepower can cover the attack on the enemy at any angle. However, there are many artillery lacking, especially large-caliber defensive artillery. There are still tens of thousands of dying refugees in the wilderness outside the city. Andrew was a little disgusted and turned his attention to the city.

The city of La Roche is not big, but the square facing the gate is extremely magnificent, almost equivalent to the square of Revolution in front of the Paris City Hall. The remaining three sides of the square are streets and houses, and there are many churches, but they are completely deserted. The residents of the entire city have evacuated to Xiao Lie and other places after receiving the news that the commander of the Vandai Legion and their guardian god were killed. In the empty city, only * who stayed at their posts here are left.

Lieutenant Neck, who rushed over, was a little puzzled. He didn't know that the new commander was so indifferent, so he had to pull his head and patrol him around.

"Lieutenant, you should report the current situation." Andrew suddenly stopped and turned around to ask Lieutenant Neck behind him.

"As for orders, general. But, do you go to the headquarters to rest for a while? There will be senior officers there to report to you!" Neck replied carefully, knowing that the general's cold blood and ruthlessness in front of him made the world scare as his great military achievements.

"Senior officers? Are they?" Andrew pointed his finger below, a group of Brigadier General Vincen who was dragged into the city by general guards like animals, and said contemptuously: "If I guess well, you should be the supreme commander of the Vondae Legion before I entered the city!"

"Yes, General!" Neck replied immediately. In fact, before he came up, he had noticed that his old superiors were tied up and dragged behind the horses. Therefore, Lieutenant Neck was so careful. He thought that there was nothing wrong with being careful, but he was scolded by the general.

"Where I go, the headquarters will be. And you, Lieutenant, don't let me remind you again, give you 5 minutes!" Andrew's face showed majesty, and the result of majesty was that Lieutenant Neck hurriedly reported the facts of the legion one by one.

Since General Rossinoer and his special forces were ambushed by rebels, the legion immediately rushed into great panic. As the interim commander of the Vandai Legion, Brigadier General Vincens gave up the defense of the surrounding villages and threw them all to the rebels of Houst, leading the remaining troops to retreat to the city of Laroche.

According to the intelligence personnel who came back, the rebels had gathered nearly 60,000 people in the forests of more than 30 miles nearby. Now, the rebels led by Huster have also infiltrated the areas around Laroche. However, they lacked siege weapons, so they were slow to hold their troops and waited for the arrival of Spanish military aid.

Currently, there are only 10,000 regular Republican troops in the city. The original 3,000 National Self-Defense Forces from Nantes and Paris have been ordered to evacuate and protect the city civilians to other safe cities to escape the war. The morale of the soldiers was extremely low. If the postman had not brought the mountain general Andrew to the Renwangdae Legion to support them, I believe that the soldiers would also flee with the middle and senior officers.

"General, the soldiers need your encouragement. They long for victory, not failure and retreat, one after another." Lieutenant Neck said loudly. For 5 minutes, his words were filled with sadness, anger and helplessness. It was not until the end that a hint of desire and passion was revealed, which was the infinite trust and blind worship of General Andrew.

"Weapons and equipment in the legion? Especially artillery." Andrew asked simply, knowing when the soldiers should be given confidence in victory.

"The number of artillery remains 36. Due to lack of maintenance, there are only 12 that can be used normally, most of which are small-caliber artillery. In terms of firearms, there are a lot of them. Basically, each soldier can be assigned three rifles, but there is a lack of fire." Lieutenant Neck reported to the general.

"Laroche City is the only ordnance of the Wandai Legion. Why is no one repairing artillery and creating fire?" Andrew felt a little surprised.

"The chief engineer of the Ordnance has left. If it weren't for the local residents who made the fire, we might not even be able to fire the rifle." Lieutenant Neck's tone was very sad.

"Food reserves?" Andrew continued.

"We can only meet the supply of 10 days, so we dare not accept refugees outside the city. For this reason, I ordered the shooting of the crowd trying to attack the city." Lieutenant Neck replied.

"Well, you have fulfilled your duties well. I should have promoted you to Lieutenant Colonel, but I gave up after entering the city. Do you know the reason?"

Neck shook his head, he didn't understand what the general in front of him wanted to say.

"Ltd Colonel Dawu, come and tell him!" Andrew called Dawu, who had been listening from the side.

"Well, Lieutenant. What the general is not satisfied with is that you have not checked General Andrew's appointment letter in advance and confirmed his identity and opened the door and let it go privately. This is a taboo in military discipline!" Dawu walked up to explain.
