Chapter 3 Magic Light

Ronald drove to Vanneth High School early in the morning.

Last night's dream was not like a dream, but like a memory of a previous life. The images in the first three minutes were extremely clear, as if a TV was playing in his mind.

In my dream, he was not a "rock high school" that he watched in the cinema. There were much fewer people sitting there than in the cinema and much smaller screens. The black box that the machine spit out in the end seemed to be a VHS videotape, a new toy invented by Japanese companies.

It seems that the movie "Rock High School" must be quite successful, otherwise it would not be released overseas.

Unfortunately, the movie was interrupted after only 3 minutes...

Ronald thought while filling out the shooting log.

Date: Saturday, December 16, 1978

Location: Van Nees High School in Hollywood, Los Angeles

Assembly time:...

I raised my wrist and looked at the watch. It was half past 5:30. I continued to write on the log: 05:30.

It’s not cold in winter in Los Angeles. He only coated a jacket in a white T-shirt, with a waist bag hanging around his waist. He put the ballpoint pen into his waist bag, took out a small notebook, and turned to a folded page, which contained the sunrise time he called the meteorological station yesterday and asked about it-06:48.

Ronald looked at his watch again, it was 5:31, and frowned with a tsk voice. The director had not arrived yet.

Walking to the first deputy director of the crew: "Ahem..." Ronald cleared his throat and was about to speak.

Jim ran from the opposite side and asked what he wanted to ask: "Where is Director Alan? Where is Joe Dante?"

The director signed by the crew is Alan Akush, and in fact the two are co-directors. Sometimes Joe Dante can even make the decision to decide how to shoot. There are some rumors on the set that they are "good friends".

The first deputy director shrugged and said he didn't know where the two were going. The deputy director was a little weak and could only follow the director's instructions to do things. Ronald curled his lips and was about to speak, but Jim pulled him.

After the two walked aside, Jim whispered: "You didn't come last night. I saw the director go to the Loxi Bar with the people from the "Raymons" band after the party last night. I heard that they were having a crazy time there."

Jim talked about a gossip that was circulated on the crew. The crew always had a lot of gossip, both true and false. If you want to eat well in the crew, you must prick up your ears and make extensive friends.

Ronald is not used to Jim's "Beatles"-style long hair. He cut it a little shorter than 300% but his beard has not been shaved for a long time since the film started. Now he has a beard.

Although his image is similar to that of the "literary and artistic circle", he doesn't smoke with the crew (maybe they smoke other things), and he doesn't like to talk about topics such as spirituality, anti-core, yoga, etc. So in terms of gossip news, he doesn't have Jim's ability.

"Okay, it seems the director will be late today," Ronald said, taking out the shooting log and handing it to Jim.

Jim took it, and the two of them met today's shooting arrangements and confirmed one by one.

After getting to know the log, Ronald took out a few more pencil drawings and handed them to Jim.

"What's this?"

“I drew a storyboard last night.”

Ronald replied that this was the first three scenes of the movie after he woke up last night, following the revelation in his dream.

Story shot drawing, referred to as Story shot, is to draw the content depicted in the script into a picture, like an enlarged book of villains. The director will use it as a reference, set the shooting schedule, guide post-editing editing, etc. If filming a movie is compared to building a house, then the story shot drawing is the architectural blueprint.

Jim was very impressed and repeatedly praised Ronald for his good paintings, so he could just take pictures.

The two of them are not ordinary assistants who come to mess around, and they both want to use this to enter the movie industry. So they come early and leave late, and watch and study while making coffee.

The two directors saw it and did not regard them as ordinary crew assistants. In addition to doing odd jobs, they also allowed them to participate in some shooting-related matters.

Jim usually follows the director and observes the director telling the actors the show;

Ronald was responsible for a lot of chores, organizing extras to rehearse, filling out shooting logs, helping directors shout commands, recording the number of people eating lunch, etc.

If you have time, the two directors will also mention them some shooting skills and experience.

"The two directors have not come yet. Today we have to take advantage of the light around sunrise to shoot. We have to prepare first, otherwise we will miss the shooting time window." Jim said after looking at the time on the shooting log. He always thinks about himself as a director to think about problems.

"Okay. Let's go and have an assistant director... Forget it, it's not very useful to find the assistant director who is only obedient. Let's go and find the photography director first." Ronald said and went to find photography director Dean Condey with Jim.

The photography director is the head of the photography team, and is installing the camera's rocker arm with his three strong men.

Ronald asked, "Mr. Condy, the director has not arrived yet. If you don't start rehearsing and moving immediately, you won't be able to catch up with the sunrise. Is the shooting possible? "

The photography director was unwilling to answer such primary questions to the two assistants, but yesterday he saw Ronald's magical performance, so he made a fuss and signaled his first photography assistant, the coke officer, and the chief push-pull camera coolie, a red-haired guy to answer.

"It is only 20 minutes before and after sunrise that it is called magic light. It has been dawn during this period, but the sun has not yet shone directly over, just like nature has turned on the background light for you. After time, you can't take that kind of picture."

"Then we must start filming now. I will coordinate the rehearsal with the extras. Jim will invite three heroines to move. Mr. Dean, you start preparing the camera. Is this possible arrangement?"

The bearded photography director was not talkative and waved his hand to recognize Ronald's arrangement. Ronald looked at Jim, "Okay!"

Today, nearly 30 extras came, all of whom were students from Van Nais High School. The filming was the beginning of high school, with drama clubs, science clubs, rugby teams and others setting up stages to welcome the freshmen, and some dancing scenes.

Ronald picked up the electric speaker and began to shout to the extra: "Boys and girls from Van Nais High School! Thank you for participating in the "Shake..." and participating in the filming of the "High School Life" movie. What we are going to shoot today is to welcome the freshmen. Are you all ready to show your face on the screen?"

"It's ready!"

"Okay, I'll divide the group. You, you... stand here; you, you... are here; those who wear skirts, come to the front row of two dresses; those who have rugby teams are here...;

You, you, you, the four of you are beautiful, standing behind the stage of the theater club; you look like academic masters and glasses standing in the science club...

OK, do you all know where you are?"

"From the rugby team, you just pick up one of our new actors, mischievously, and carry him along this road...

Others talk to each other at the booth they booked."

"Let's rehearse..."

"It's very good. Remember, don't look at the camera! I repeat, everyone, don't look at the camera! We're shooting you talking to each other, not you smile at the camera. Whoever looks at the camera, I will cut off his picture. Do you know?"

"You want to go to movies, your parents and boyfriends see your faces in the cinema, and if you want to become the most popular person in the class, don't look at the camera! Let's practice again..."

"It's very good. Now everyone goes to change clothes and girls go to make up. It's 5:45 now. I'll give you 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, it's 5:55. Everyone wears the prescribed clothes and gather here."

After temporarily disbanding the extra, Ronald quickly walked towards a group of people gathered next to the camera, "Who saw the scene record? Did anyone see the scene record Jenny?"

"Ronnie, I'm here." A female voice came from behind.

Ronald turned around and saw Jenny holding a shooting log in one hand and writing on a big notebook in the other.

The scene record is also called the continuity supervisor, which is responsible for keeping the props and costumes of each scene consistent and preventing them from being missed. This is a meticulous job.

Ronald walked over, picked up the record board, pointed to the words on it and lowered his voice: "Jenny, the name of the movie here must be changed, it cannot be called 'rock high school', it must be called 'high school life'."
