9 Examination and Education

Ruochen: I am thinking about a question recently: Is the proposal of exam-oriented education correct?

Jing Xing: Exam-taking is about exam-taking, and education is about education, it is not the same thing. Why do you think of this?

Ruochen: I was fishing by the river and suddenly remembered this. I reflected on what I was cultivating when I was teaching.

Jingxing: The two are both related, but they also have clear boundaries. Examinations belong to teaching, cultivating exam skills and improving test paper scores. Education focuses on educating people, shaping personality, lofty intentions, broadening horizons, and improving taste.

Ruochen: I think so. We only focus on problem-solving skills training. After completing a test paper, we only look at the scores, and we don’t pay attention to what is said in the article at all.

Jing Xing: The consequences of doing this are very serious. You are cultivating exam machines and not shaping people at all.

Ruochen: I also know that the consequences are serious, and they are all forced by the rate of admission. In fact, there are many wonderful short essays in an English test paper. Whether it is knowledgeable, interesting, thoughtful and scientific, it is worth savoring. Unfortunately, all of them are ignored by us, only skills and scores are unforgettable.

Jing Xing: The result is that the skills have improved, and the scores have also improved. However, humanities have not improved at all, and scores and skills are every day. At best, what you do is test-oriented teaching, and it has nothing to do with real education. Don’t sell dog meat by putting aside the sheep’s head. It’s a heavy responsibility.

Ruochen: How to break out of the test-taking circle?

Jing Xing: In fact, exam-oriented and education are not incompatible, and the two can join forces.

Ruochen: Can you really shake hands and have fun?

Jing Xing: When did I deceive you? In order to be indispensable in the test-taking skills, the scores must also rise. Then you must be better and better. What the article says is worth taking time to think about. Reading to cultivate sentiment, improve your realm, and your eyes will be broader.

Ruochen: Standing high and looking far, happiness adds a little more. Returning to education to exams is even more icing on the cake.

Jingxing: Understanding is improved, knowledge and action are integrated. Give a brief example for tasting, reading and thinking. This short English essay has the title type of grammatical fill-in-the-blanks, which talks about Soong Mei-ling's health preservation. You can't fill in the blanks and get a high score, and you have to be willing to spend time thinking about the way to health. Soong Mei-ling is still so healthy over the age of 100. Why? Has anyone thought about it?

Ruochen: I guess it won’t be much. Most of them only focus on the scores.

Jing Xing: I picked up sesame seeds and lost watermelons, and the loss was huge. There may be many health reasons, but one thing is worth remembering in our hearts. We should be 70% full in our diet and never get a pill. Not only do we set an example, but we also ask Chiang Kai-shek to abide by it. Did you see Chiang Kai-shek getting fat?

Ruochen: I don’t seem to have seen it in TV movies.

Jing Xing: If they can eat in a moderate manner, their health will be sufficiently guaranteed. Without restraint, there will be no health, and they will find it difficult to do anything. Have you got a better understanding?

Ruochen: I know what to do.
