Chapter 23 The Noble Slave Trader
In the mayor's study, Rhode of the Iron Cross was sitting on a chair, looking at the bookshelf full of cotton paper books, and smiled and said, "Myen, it seems that you have new works in the past few years of your life in the plantation."
Several windows on the walls were closed to isolate the cold wind outside the house and dim the light in the study. A few crystal candle lamps were lit on the desk, and the dazzling candlelight became soft and bright through the specially made crystal lampshade. Maien leaned over the table and wrote with a quill pen, while complaining: "Where are there any new works? They drove me from Luoye City to Bolang Town, and they didn't even have a book to bring. I am old and my memory is not as good as before. Without books as reference, how could I, an old guy, write new things? The cotton paper books on the bookshelf are some memories I have used to kill time in the past few years and write casually... Some cotton paper books have rotten, and the rest cannot be saved for long."
He put down his quill, rubbed his sore wrists, and said to Rhode: "The lamps you gave are good, it would be even better if you could give me another box of crust paper."
Rhode said with a smile unchanged: "My Sage, you can't even bring your own collection of books. How dare I, a leader of a small adventure group, give you a box of animal paper? Not to mention a box, even one, I don't have the courage to give it to you. With the wisdom of my master, you should be able to think of the eyes and ears placed by you, and understand my difficulties."
Maien's eyes became gloomy, he felt a little humble for a while, but finally sighed helplessly, "Those people are just trying to trap me to death on the border plantation."
"You don't have any chance at all," Rhode lowered his voice and took the opportunity to say.
The old mayor glanced at him sideways, showed a playful and sarcastic smile, and asked back, "What? Do you have a way to let me go back to Luoye City? Do you know that I was expelled from the parliament after I committed a crime?"
Meyn has lost power in recent years. In the past, slave traders like Rhodes were not even qualified to talk to him. Meyn did not believe that Rhodes could know his own affairs, and even if he heard some half-true rumors, he would not be able to get involved. If the slave traders could really participate in it, no matter what the final result of their operation was, he would not be as simple as usual.
Rhodes did not seem to realize that the Sage of Meen despised him, and then said, "I certainly have no right to know about your affairs. I only heard that the adults were suddenly arrested the night before taking over as the consul of the Luoye City State. It was not until you were taken to the town of Bolang that the Council of Meen urgently passed the order of the Sage of Meen to replace the mayor of Bolang."
"You didn't commit anything, you were just demoted."
Maine put away his contemptuous gesture, looked at Rhodes again, nodded indifferently and said, "Or, I'm under house arrest."
"Whether it is demotion or house arrest, you and Lord Joseph are not charged with crimes." Rod said with a reserved smile: "Loose Leaf City stipulates that the Border Guard will change defense every two years. In a few months, it will be the turn of the Bolang Town Guard to change defense. You and Captain Joseph have worked in Bolang Town for a full four years and separated from relatives and friends for a full four years. Don't you want to go back next spring and reunite with your family?"
"Well, keep talking, I'll listen." Mayor Mien said lightly.
Rhode pondered and said, "Of course, I'm just a little person and can't help. However, some of my friends are people who have a solution, and the old friends of the Adults in the Luoye City Council work together. Maybe there is a chance to resign from your position as mayor and return to the main city to retire. Luoye City has one city and four states, and you probably have no hope to return to Highland City, but for the four states under the Highland City, you can choose any of the four states under the Highland City... All I said are the truth."
Mayor Maien held his hands together, stared at the other party deeply, and asked, "What do you want from me?"
But Rhode asked back, "Mr. Veltock learned words from Lord Sage yesterday and suddenly fell asleep. How is he now?"
Maien sneered: "You slave trader are really trying to make the child... ready to sell him to that big man?"
Rhode shook his head and said, "Most of the half-elves in the main city think that slave trading is a bad business, but I firmly believe that slave trading is a good deed. Lord Sage has lived in the border plantation for so long, you should understand that without slave traders like me, many barbarians would not be able to survive. I found a way out for them, and I just made some money from it."
"What you call 'good deeds' is actually digging the corners of the alliance..."
Maine shook her head, unwilling to talk in depth with a slave trader about the topic, and instead said: "That child has a serious amnesia and has already hurt his mental state. As long as he concentrates, he will lose his mind and get sleepy, or even get dizzy... How much value does such a half-elf boy have to you? Who are you going to sell him?"
"Sell? No, no, no, sir, you misunderstood. I only sell the business of barbarian slaves and half-elf slaves. It's not my turn, a little man." Rhode waved his hand and continued, "A wise sage like you should not stay in a border town with poor living conditions. Mr. Veltok is the same. The stable and prosperous main city is where he should go. I am willing to introduce a wealthy, elegant and powerful family to adopt him for Mr. Veltok. Even if I gain some insignificant benefits from it, you should believe that this is a totally noble act, just as it would rather offend some great men than help a sage return to a civilized city-state, only for noble purposes."
Successful businessmen always know that different methods should be used to deal with different people, and that one sage should reason with him.
Meyn must admit that Rhodes made sense. Interests and noble behaviors do not necessarily conflict. Rhodes cannot deny noble itself when doing noble things for selfish interests. Unless Meyn himself is not noble, he cannot deny Rhodes's rhetoric.
He thought for a moment and asked, "There are five famous pillars in Luoye City. Which one are you going to introduce Veltok to?"
Rhode shook his head and smiled, "I can't say this. I'm just a small character. Don't make things difficult for me."
Meen nodded and asked again, "So, how should I help you?"
"Sir, I didn't need to provide a method. But..."
Rod smiled bitterly and said, "My business is mainly in Bolang Town, Lord Batum of the Adventurer's House. I dare not offend him no matter what. Therefore, I hope that Lord Maine will bring Virtok with him when he returns to the fallen city. He is free. As long as he is willing to move to the main city with you, Lord Batum has no right to detain him. I don't have to offend Adventurer's House."
Mayor Mien said with a smile: "You are using me as a shield."
Rhode stood up, stroked his chest and said humbly, "For adults, it's just a matter of the way."
Without asking for permission, Maine said, "I have to consider it. Commander Rod, please go back first."
As he was talking, a conversation between Veltok and John came from downstairs. Rod didn't want to see him and Mien himself by Boss Bartom's confidant, so he quickly said goodbye to the mayor and quickly left the study. But he forgot an important thing, that is, Veltok was particularly good at distinguishing smells.
So, Veltok took John and broke straight into the mayor's study, sniffed it habitually, and immediately said, "Hey, Commander Rhodes just here."
Meyn originally wanted to scold Veltok for not knowing how to knock on the door, but when he heard what he said, he widened his eyes in surprise, "Is your nose so flexible?"
The mayor admitted that Commander Rhode had just arrived but did not explain. John was suspicious, but Virtoke did not take this matter to heart and said hurriedly: "I want to continue learning to write."
He restored his writing memory, but there was still a difference between the texts of the half-elf of the Disasha and the words he remembered, and it required special learning to master them. Moreover, when Maine taught to write, he would say something, which was what Veltok expected.
Mayor Maien said with a funny look: "What? You haven't slept enough yet and want to sleep for another day?" He waved his hand and sighed: "Child, your illness is not cured yet and you need to rest quietly. I dare not teach you how to write anymore, so as not to increase your mental burden. When your mental state improves, come to me to learn words."
Without saying a word, Veltok walked to the desk, grabbed Maine's quill, brushed it on the cotton bark paper, and wrote five different characters in style, staring at the old man and asked, "Do you know these words?"
Mayor Mien's face changed drastically. His fingers trembled and gently stroked the words written by Veltok, muttering excitedly: "Secret text... No, not completely. Judging from the deformation style, these two should be ancient characters... I seem to have seen them, oh, by the way, I remember that they are the characters of Torin ruins clay boards, and the oldest flower-like characters discovered so far! They are the alphabetical characters of the half-elves flower-like characters!"
He raised his head suddenly, grabbed Veltok's wrist through the table, and asked enthusiastically and excitedly: "Child, what are you writing? How could you use the 'Floral Mosaic'? Which sage disciple are you?"
Veltok took the opportunity to press the old man's arm around, and he immediately found that a faint elasticity of the mayor's seemingly loose arm could offset his grasp. This feeling had also happened to John's arm, but it was even more obvious. Grasping his arm was like grabbing a slippery loach.
"Hey, the muscles and bones on your arms are very similar to John."
Mayor Maien said angrily: "Don't interrupt! Tell me quickly, what are you writing? Whose disciple are you?"
Victor shook Maine's hand away, shook his head and said, "The words I wrote are all 'Who am I?'... I don't remember anything else. You have to tell me, whose disciple I am? What is the 'mother'?"
Maine said loudly with a beard and glared: "I know whose disciple you are. Do I still want to ask you? The so-called "mother-word" is the original text of the semi-elf civilization. It is rarely circulated. Except for the great sage Malf, more than 1,000 years ago, I have never heard of any sage who deciphered the "mother-word"."
John asked curiously: "Master, is the 'mother' important?"
"Important? More than important?! It's very, very important!" Maine shouted: "The Great Sage Malf deciphered the remains of "Mother Words", but did not impart the "Mother Words" to anyone. All the private notes he left were written in "Mother Words". No one could understand them, but everyone wanted to understand them...Wiltok, it doesn't matter who can't remember you, you are writing a few "Mother Words" for me to see."
When Maine mentioned that the Great Sage Malf's notes were written in the "mother-word" that no one could understand, Wiltock decided not to teach anyone such words.
He is very smart now.
Wertok was about to ask about the private notes of the Great Sage Malf, when there was a burst of howling from outside the house. He walked to the wall curiously, pushed open the window of the study, and saw the barbarian boy Yogge with strange scars on his face, barely, running around the obstacles and screaming.
A group of half-elves guards were watching the fun, while the leader of the man slave, Ingre and several strong man slaves, held sticks and ropes to rush and blocked Yog.
They and Jog spoke barbarian languages, and Veltok didn't understand them, so he asked, "What are they doing?"
Mayor Meyen leaned over and took a look, and said indifferently: "Ingrey was going to circumcise the barbarian boy, but he didn't want to, so he escaped."
"Circumcision? What does this mean? Can I go and see it?" asked Virtok with great enthusiasm.
