Chapter six hundred and thirty second autumn

Zhu Hongsan felt embarrassed when he heard Zhang Huangyan say this. This battle is easy to fight, but the name is difficult to deal with. After all, he has become the emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and Zhu Yuanzhang's imperial ancestors have become his own curse, and some things are very difficult to deal with.

But this is not a problem for Zhu Hongsan. Zhu Hongsan thought about it and thought that it would be better not to use the name of Japanese pirates. Isn’t you a vassal state of the Ming Dynasty? Now if you have something to do, don’t you pay for the food? Zhu Hongsan remembers that in the Gulf War in later generations, Japan received nearly half of the military spending for the United States.

After thinking it through, Zhu Hongsan touched his chin and said, "Using the name of uniting against the Qing Dynasty, I will say that the Emperor of Ming Dynasty has replaced people. Now I am Zhu Hongsan is the emperor. You Japanese people are few and weak, but I am particular about people and do not care about the chaos of the Japanese pirates in the past. Now I am fighting with the Qing Dynasty. Since you are one of the fifteen countries personally conferred by Emperor Taizu, you will be a vassal state, providing me with military pay and military rations!"

This was probably the most rude and arrogant diplomatic document in the history of the Ming Dynasty. Zhang Huangyan dared not refute it. He could only translate Zhu Hongsan's words into classical Chinese and write it into an imperial edict. Zhu Hongsan looked at it and sent it to Zhao Guoliang from Yangzhou. If the imperial edict was handed over to the cabinet for approval according to normal procedures, the cabinet could only be announced to the world and become the law after the cabinet agreed. However, Zhu Hongsan's determined rules and military issues did not need to go through the cabinet, and he could use the seal himself, so he avoided a lot of unnecessary trouble.

Seeing this matter ended, Zhu Hongsan asked again: "Xuanzhu, what else is there to be important?"

Zhang Huangyan said respectfully: "Your Majesty, it's nearly August now, and a few days will be the provincial examination in the year of Wuzi. The Ministry of Rites came up with a memorial to ask Your Majesty to arrange the chief examiner of this year's autumn examination!"

After Zhang Huangyan reminded Zhu Hongsan that there was such a big event this year. Although Zhu Hongsan had all the wrong ideas in his eyes, there were still benefits, which at least guaranteed the promotion channel for the upper and lower levels. He was a fielder in the morning and entered the emperor's hall in the evening. This is a true portrayal of this system.

When Zhu Hongsan was in power in Guangdong, he also thought about selecting cadres according to the later system, but this affected the fundamental interests of the scholar group, and their reaction was not something Zhu Hongsan could bear.

Later, after seeing the operation of the ancient officialdom, Zhu Hongsan discovered that the imperial examination system is irreplaceable until now. It is simple to abolish the imperial examination system, but how to select talents? Is it still going back to the Qin and Han Dynasties? Or directly implementing a nine-rank Zhongzheng system of the Wei and Jin Dynasties? Isn’t that a reverse of history? Even the college entrance examination system in later generations is not a variant of the imperial examination system?

So after careful consideration, Zhu Hongsan decided not to change the imperial examination system and follow the previous system. Let’s talk about what to do in the future.

So after Zhu Hongsan occupied Nanjing last year, the wind was immediately released in the second year, that is, in the year of Wuzi, this year, the imperial examinations were reopened in Yingtian Prefecture, Nanjing, and the imperial examinations were held in the spring of the third year.

As soon as the news came out, Zhu Hongsan was praised by scholars all over the world, because since the last examination of the 16th year of Chongzhen, there has been no examination for five years, and scholars across the country are waiting for it.

However, in recent years, all forces in China have become one and have no energy to do these things. Only Zhu Hongsan held a provincial examination when he was in Guangdong and selected hundreds of juren to respond to emergency responses.

So when Zhu Hongsan occupied Nanjing, Qian Qianyi immediately proposed to reopen the imperial examination. Zhu Hongsan also felt that this was a good opportunity to win people's hearts. He issued an order the next day to reopen the provincial examination on August 15, 2018, and hold a meeting in March next year. Another point was proposed by Ma Mingyuan, that is, regardless of north, west, east, west, or the territory of the Qing Dynasty or the territory of the King of Gui, as long as he had a scholar in the former Ming Dynasty, he could come to Nanjing to take the exam and take the exam tomorrow in March.

As soon as this news came out, all scholars in the world were in full swing. In May, scholars from afar came to Nanjing to prepare for the exam. Now Nanjing is even more crowded, and the provincial capitals in the city have already been full of residence.

This is also impossible. The provincial examination period is in August of autumn, so it is also called the autumn examination. The provincial examination is a local examination held by the southern, northern Zhili and the various provincial governing and envoys. The location is in the southern Yingtian Prefecture, the northern Shuntian Prefecture, and the provincial governing and envoys. However, it is easy to say in the south. The northern provinces are under the control of the Qing Dynasty. The scholars from those provinces only cross the Yangtze River to Yingtian Prefecture to take the imperial examination.

The provincial examinations are mostly held in autumn, so they are also called "Autumn Examination". Each examination has three sessions, each session has three days and nights. Since the show has to be changed twice in the middle, it is actually nine days and seven nights.

The first test was the eight-legged essay, which was to select materials from the Four Books and Five Classics to draw questions. The second test was the official application text, which was divided into two types: official documents, including official documents from the upper and lower levels and judicial judgments based on the cases provided. The third test involved specific issues of national economy and people's livelihood, and required candidates to provide countermeasures and solutions. The scientific examination was a major event for the imperial court at that time. In order to ensure the smooth progress of the examination, the number house would be locked after the examination. No matter what happened, even if a fire occurred, the candidates could not be unlocked.

There were many rules for the imperial examination in ancient times, and it was quite complicated. The complete procedures include the provincial examination, the imperial examination, the palace examination, that is, the local, central, and the emperor level three examination. The provincial examination is also called the township examination. Passing the provincial examination is called the "passing examination" and becoming a juren.

In terms of form, the provincial examination can be regarded as the "national unified examination for ordinary colleges and universities" in ancient China. Passing the imperial examination is equivalent to being admitted to a prestigious university in later generations. The imperial examination is a bit like the civil servant exam in later generations. After passing the imperial examination, you are qualified to become an official. The palace examination is somewhat like the selection of leading cadres in later generations. If you do well, you will stay in various central ministries and commissions. If you are not good, you can only go to the local area to become a county magistrate.

After Zhu Hongsan's in-depth understanding, he found that the imperial examination does not mean that he has to go down to become an official after the exam. Many people in later generations think that these scholars can do it well if they don't understand anything. In fact, this is a misinterpretation of later generations. The complete imperial examination system is only part of the examination. After the palace examination, these preparatory officials will also go to various central departments to observe politics, that is, to be interns, and learn how to deal with government affairs.

Usually the study time is one year, but it is not absolute, and it ends in a few months. After the exam, you can go to the Hanlin Academy, which is Shujishi. This is the prime minister's preparatory class. This is where great people stay. Many chief ministers of the Ming Dynasty, such as Xu Jie, Zhang Juzhong, and Yang Tinghe, were all from Shujishi.

The remaining unlucky children will be in the local area as officials. If you have the exam, you can become a low-level official in various parts of the central government. If you are in the local area as a seventh-rank magistrate.

Of course, this is a normal channel for becoming an official. If you are just a tough student, how awesome I can also enter the Imperial College. Some of them are like the adult education preparatory classes, and you can become an official without having to be a regular student in the imperial examination, but there are quite few opportunities.

Because officials from ancient times who came from the imperial examination were much more smug than those of later generations. They believed that only the imperial examination was the right way, and their descendants would go to the imperial examination as long as they had a glimmer of hope. If there were cases of future generations that could become officials for their sons, and cases of falsification of education and age were faked, they would not have to punish you, and the saliva of the cultural world would drown you.

Even Zhang Juzheng, who was in power in the Wanli period, was scolded by cultural people to death just to get his son's background. Even after his death, this was one of the major crimes. His eldest son Zhang Jingxiu could not bear the humiliation and finally became silenced.

So after Zhu Hongsan's detailed research, he felt that in this era, there is no mechanism for selecting talents safer, equal and fairly than the imperial examination. Therefore, Zhu Hongsan was preparing to not resist the imperial examination system, but used the imperial examination to select talents for himself.

When Zhu Hongsan heard Zhang Huangyan mention this matter, he nodded heavily and said, "It's right. The imperial examination is a national talent ritual. There must be no bad news. Who do you think is suitable for the chief examiner of two chiefs and four deputy?"

The provincial examination is different from the imperial examination. The provincial examination is carried out by each province itself. Generally speaking, the Central Ministry of Rites selects officials as the chief examiner, and then the academic and political education of each province serves as the other chief examiner. Because the imperial examination is a national examination, one or more people have to be selected from the cabinet's grand senators as the chief examiner. The palace examination is naturally the emperor as the chief examiner.

Zhang Huangyan thought for a while and said, "Your Majesty, although this provincial examination is held in Yingtian Prefecture, all the candidates from all northern provinces have to come to take the exam. This provincial examination is Your Majesty's first imperial examination in the old capital. So I think this candidate should choose a mature and steady person to serve as the candidate!"

"Xuanzhu is right. What are you good candidates?"

"Your Majesty, I recommend Hanlin Bachelor Huang Zongxi as the chief examiner!"

Zhu Hongsan frowned when he heard Zhang Huangyan say this. Huang Zongxi knew very well. During the dynasty meeting the past year, Huang Zongxi offended Zhu Hongsan for the question of whether King Zhu Huai of Chu should participate. He has been imprisoned in the Jinyiwei Prison for almost ten months.

He was also very troubled by this thorny Huang Zongxi and Zhu Hongsan. Huang Zongxi is a man of talent, but he is also proud. When he sold his wealth and organized a rebel army to fight against the Qing Dynasty in eastern Zhejiang, he was also very rewarded by the court. However, this guy had a deep relationship with Zhu Yihai, the king of Lu. He even heard in the imperial prison that he wrote a major calendar of the Lu State, and probably didn't say anything good to him.

However, Huang Zongxi was born in eastern Zhejiang, his teacher was Liu Zongzhou, the boss of Donglin, and his father was Huang Daozhou, a Confucian scholar. Even Zhu Hongsan dared not treat him this identity. Even in the imperial prison, Zhu Hongsan also issued an order to let the Jinyiwei treat Huang Zongxi well and not to make things difficult for him. Huang Zongxi completely defeated the old man in the imperial prison and had to serve him every day.
