Chapter 20 Bluffing

After the British army fled from Agdabia, the German army received an order to rest.

The German officers and soldiers were all surprised by this, because the British army was already defeated at this time, and it was a good time to chase after him. Why did they stop and let the British army escape from the German army's sight calmly?!

More importantly, this is not Rommel's usual style.

This is indeed not Rommel's style. This is the joint order of the heads of state of Germany and Italy, namely Hitler and Mussolini. Both of them were frightened by Rommel's bold actions... The British were deceived by Rommel's bluff, thinking that Rommel had landed with a large number of German troops, tanks and armored vehicles, but Hitler and Mussolini knew very well that Rommel had only one German division with less than 20,000 people. Although the Italian army had 80,000, those were all defeated soldiers who were chased back from Egypt by the British army. They could only serve as a foil at most, that is, the German army charged forward and the Italian army followed behind to take over the German-occupied towns.

What made Hitler particularly worried was that Rommel had less than 100 tanks in his hand, and some of these 100 vehicles had already lost on the front line, and some had just arrived in Tripoli.

The Italian army has more than 400 tanks, but most of them are old-fashioned M13 and M15 tanks with lagging performance. These tanks are almost targets in front of British tanks and anti-tank guns.

In contrast, the British army had more than 150,000 men, 1,114 tanks, 1,000 artillery and 1,500 aircraft...

Hitler knew very well that what Rommel is doing now is to take risks and advance. As long as the British know Rommel's reality and concentrate their forces to turn around and fight back, Rommel will undoubtedly be defeated.

This defeat will probably cause Germany and the Italian army to completely lose their foothold in North Africa.

Therefore, Hitler ordered Rommel's troops to stop. If the British army wanted to retreat, they would let them retreat. The German army took this time to build fortifications to gather strength. After more than a month, the 15th Armored Division would arrive as scheduled. It would not be too late to advance in the direction of the British army.

But Rommel has always ignored Hitler's orders... Rommel has served as the captain of the head of the headquarters guard next to Hitler, so he is very clear about Hitler's character. He knows that what Hitler wants is victory. As long as he can win on the battlefield, even if he goes against his will, he will eventually receive honors and rewards.

Rommel was unwilling to give up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was like being in front of a table of delicious food, but he could only smell it but not take action.

So Rommel directed the troops forward.

Until Rommel's boss, General Garibaldi, appeared in Rommel's command... In fact, Garibaldi was Rommel's nominal boss. Hitler was willing to hand over the command to the Italians. Just considering that the Italians might be more familiar with the desert battlefield and also needed to use Italian troops and logistics supplies. Rommel, who was arrogant and invincible on the battlefield, did not take Garibaldi seriously, who had been defeated repeatedly.

"We must stop the attack!" Garibaldi almost roared at Rommel: "You have no idea how dangerous our situation is. Our army is very tired, our supplies are very lacking, our preparations are not sufficient, and our ammunition is only enough for two days!"

"The British would not be as fragile as he showed. They might have designed a trap waiting for us! Didn't you see that? They hoped that we would attack, use this method to lengthen our army's logistics supply line, and then launch a counterattack at the right time! We were defeated like this before!"

...

Rommel quietly looked at the Italian admiral roaring in front of him. His fat face turned red with anger like a balloon about to explode.

"Did you listen to what I'm saying?" Seeing that Rommel was dissatisfied, Garibaldi asked dissatisfied.

"Of course, General Garibaldi!" Rommel replied: "I'm listening!"

"Then execute my order!" Garibaldi glared at Rommel. He was very dissatisfied with this arrogant and disobedient German general. If it weren't for saving himself and the Italian army in crisis, he believed that he would propose to replace this guy who did not understand military discipline.

"I have stopped attacking!" Rommel replied: "My troops are in Agdabiya, and they do not continue to pursue them!"

"But..." Garibaldi couldn't help but speak.

God, Agdabia is hundreds of kilometers away from the first "stop attack" order issued by Garibaldi.

After thinking about it, Garibaldi slowed down and said to Rommel: "General, I hope you can face this problem. The logistics problem determines that we cannot go any further. It will crush our troops. Now, we should be stationed in Agdabia, do you agree?"

Rommel did not answer Garibaldi. He just picked up the coffee and took a sip, thinking about how to attack. He stopped in Agdabia not because of some orders, nor because of Mussolini or Garibaldi... He could not listen to Hitler's orders, and he would care about what others said?!

The reason why Rommel stopped the attack was just because of the problem of logistics supply. Without ammunition and supplies, the German army could not fight... However, logistics supply required Garibaldi's cooperation. After all, the Italian army was a grain transport brigade.

So... how can we convince the old-fashioned, timid and without visionary Italian general in front of us?

At this time, a correspondent came in, handed Rommel a telegram and said, "General, orders from the Supreme Command of Berlin!"

Rommel took the telegram and looked at it, then grinned.

"General Garibaldi!" Rommel raised the telegram in his hand and said proudly: "Berlin gives me complete freedom of movement!"

"What?" Garibaldi was stunned when she heard this, then sighed and said, "Okay, general! But I have to declare that if our army is defeated, I will not be responsible for it!"

"Of course!" Rommel nodded: "I will say that I am just going my own way!"

What Garibaldi did not expect was that Berlin's order was just the opposite. Hitler criticized Rommel in the telegram and insisted that Rommel stop moving forward and cooperate with the Italian army to build a line of defense.
