Eight hundred and ninetieth chapters fire suppression

The retreat of the 5th Infantry Division of the United States fell into chaos without any surprise:

Landing craft rushed to the beach with shells and bullets, full of soldiers, but were about to withdraw, but were covered by German artillery fire.

This is the German artillery unit deployed about five kilometers behind... Generally, they hid in bunkers and did not act, even if the enemy landed.

The reason is that once you take action, you are likely to be discovered by Allied fighter jets and firepower suppression.

However, when US landing craft are intensively landing ashore and want to withdraw US soldiers, it is worth it even if you risk being discovered, because it can cause several times or even dozens of times of casualties to the US military's livelihood.

So, a large number of shells roared, and while blew up the beach and sea water, they also sank the landing craft one by one and overturned.

Coupled with the rain of bullets fired at them by German tanks and soldiers hiding in fortifications, the entire beach churned around like a pot of boiling water. The US troops in it were like ants on a hot pan, running around everywhere, screaming in wounds, and many people even jumped into the sea and swam in the opposite direction... They no longer care whether they could survive the waves or not, they just wanted to leave this hellish world as soon as possible.

Eisenhower looked at the map in front of him with a gloomy face. From time to time, a staff officer handed over a telegram and reported the casualties to him, but Eisenhower was not even willing to hear these again... He was already a little numb.

At this time, there were only five hours before landing operations. If the airborne troops were to carry out airborne operations, the casualties at this time were far more than the estimated 24-hour casualties before the war.

The most serious casualties were undoubtedly the 4th and 5th Infantry Divisions that attacked the "Utah Beach". The number of casualties has reached more than 9,000. There are also many missing persons, and there are still those who are suppressed on the beach and unable to move... There are very few soldiers who can be rescued.

The casualties of this beach alone reach the sum of the other four beaches.

In addition, the three airborne divisions that landed behind the defense line did not know the exact situation... because they were scattered everywhere and did not know each other's situation.

But Eisenhower knew that if the Germans were prepared, that is, if they knew that the Allies were going to land in the Brittany Peninsula, these three airborne divisions would be in danger.

"General!" At this time, Montgomery hurriedly walked into Eisenhower's command center.

"Monty!" Eisenhower said with a stern face: "You are here just right. I think our strategic deception has failed. How do you think we should deal with the endgame in front of you!"

"I came for this!" said Montgomery: "Because I heard you ordered the 4th and 5th Infantry Divisions to retreat..."

"I have no other choice, Monty!" Eisenhower replied: "Their opponent is the 21st Armored Division, and I can't watch them slaughtered!"

"General!" Montgomery opposed: "But if we give up 'Utah Beach', we will expose the flanks of the landing forces of the 'Omaha Beach' to the Germans, followed by 'Golden Beach', 'Juno Beach', and finally 'Sword Beach'..."

"I know, Monty!" Eisenhower said: "But do you have a better way? You also know that our intelligence is seriously wrong... The enemy is not the poor combat-capable coastal defense division stationed at the Atlantic Barriers. Perhaps this is indeed the case, but the coastal defense division is just used by them to deal with our bombing. After that, the more combat-capable troops immediately took over the fortifications of the coastal defense division. We cannot break through their defense lines, especially the 'Utah Beach'!"

"Of course I know, General!" Montgomery replied: "So, but we can't just give in!"

"Do you have any better way?" Eisenhower spread his hands.

"Although there is no better way, we can try it!" Montgomery pointed to the map and said: "We can partially withdraw the troops from Utah Beach, and then use naval guns and air bombing to drag the German 21st armored division in Utah Beach to prevent them from reinforcing troops from other directions. As long as there is a breakthrough in other directions, we can immediately go around the rear of Utah Beach to surround it!"

Eisenhower thought about it and said hesitantly: "Naval Cannon and Air Force...Monty, this means we will cause accidental injury to our own people!"

"That's a cover for their fire!" Montgomery said: "If we don't do this, their casualties will be even worse!"

What Montgomery said was obviously an excuse, but from a realistic perspective, he was correct: the casualties of the US military located in "Utah Beach" were inevitable, and the only difference was whether it was killed by the enemy or at the hands of its own.

If it were the former, the casualties would not only be greater, but the Allies would not be able to attack the Germans on the defense line.

The latter is exactly the opposite.

Therefore, anyone who knows how to do addition and subtraction operations knows what to do at this time.

After thinking about it, Eisenhower nodded and agreed to the plan.

Major General Logan, who was suppressed by German firepower on the front line, received only a brief order: "We will implement firepower suppression on the enemy and order your people to hide on the spot!"

"Firepower suppression?" Major General Logan asked in confusion: "What kind of firepower suppression?"

But he received no reply, and the phone on the other side was already hung up.

However, there is no need for a reply, because there is a whistling sound of shells in the air.

Major General Logan easily knew from his whistle and direction that it was a large caliber gun fired from the sea, so he hurriedly shouted to the surroundings: "Let's go down and hide!"

Thousands of various fighter jets and bombers were also bombed together with the naval guns. In fact, the United States and Britain gathered a total of 2,077 bombers at this moment... They will continue to bomb the "Pacific Barriers" for two hours in the future.

The first ones were dispatched were the RAF "Halifax" heavy bombers and the "Lancaster" heavy bombers. The order they received was to throw bombs at a depth of one kilometer in the direction of the German army.

Needless to say, their bombing range includes the remaining forces of the 4th and 5th Infantry Divisions of the US Army.

They had to do this because if they didn't do this, they would not be able to effectively kill the German troops stationed at the "Atlantic Barriers".
