The CPU pre-execution program will run before the GPU core, because: first, the CPU pre-execution thread only contains memory pickup instructions from the GPU core and has no floating point calculations; second, compared with the GPU scalar core, the CPU runs higher frequency and the instruction level is also more parallel.
The researchers also used the prefetching capability of CPU level 2 cache to increase the CPU's memory bandwidth, so the dependence and latency of GPU threads on level 3 cache access are greatly reduced.
In addition, because the pre-executed program is directly controlled by user-level applications, the accuracy and flexibility are very high.
Engineers tried a series of benchmark tests and concluded that this approach could improve processor performance by an average of 21.4%, up to an astonishing 114%.
