Chapter 23 Change
A maid heard this and hurried toward the residential area behind.
"Let's talk first. It's still early for the party anyway." Senator Carter picked up the champagne next to him and handed it to the three siblings.
"Is your father in business?"
"Our father served in the Northern Continent Army in his early years, and later joined the Navy's Scorpion Corps. He retired as a Navy Captain and now runs a farm."
Annick took the champagne and handed it to his two sisters. When he heard the Scorpion Legion, Senator Carter was stunned for a moment, and then said.
"Scorpion Legion, your father and I can be considered as having served in the same army. I was born in the navy. Your father retired bravely. I believe he will definitely be able to build a bigger army if he serves for a few more years.
Merit."
I'm afraid I won't die to earn this merit, Annick replied in his heart.
The number of people in the front hall gradually increased, and Senator Carter and his wife also went to entertain other guests. The three siblings found a corner to stay in their busy schedule and ate snacks leisurely.
About 20 minutes later, Mrs. Carter led a girl with blond hair and blue eyes in a navy blue dress over, accompanied by two female companions.
When Mrs. Carter found the three siblings who were having fun, the blond girl covered her face and laughed softly.
"Mr. Annick, this is my daughter Anne. I hope you can get to know her." Mrs. Carter pointed at the blond girl and said.
"Good evening, Miss Anne, happy birthday to you." Annick tried hard to swallow the snack, and then said.
"Mr. Annick, I thought all the people here tonight are my father's friends. It's rare to see a trainee gentleman." Miss Anne was teasing herself for not having seen the world.
"Here are my two sisters, who happen to be one year younger than you. I believe there will be more topics to talk about among the ladies." Annick talked about this and pushed his sister out in time.
"Perhaps, Mr. Annick will have more topics to talk about with my father."
Anne put away her smile and said with a somewhat sarcastic tone. Did she think of herself as a careerist who sneaked into a celebrity party out of nowhere and tried to become a member of the parliament?
"Ladies, can I borrow this young gentleman for a while?" came an old but steady voice.
An elderly man wearing a black tuxedo, a tall silk hat, and an ivory pipe in his mouth was standing behind him.
"Long time no see Mr. Russell. Of course, you should go and talk beforehand." Mrs. Carter replied.
It was his mentor Russell who came to rescue him, and he didn't know when he had arrived.
Annick waved to his two sisters, followed Russell, and walked out of the front hall. He found a corner under the sycamore tree in the courtyard to chat.
"Gui'an, long time no see, Master Russell."
"Perhaps I shouldn't call you over. It seems that you are not used to this kind of social environment." Mr. Russell took a puff of cigarette and said.
In fact, I feel bad that giving a gift cost me nearly a week's salary. Annick complained in his heart.
"It's okay, I'm just a helper. Isn't the point of inviting you here? Teacher, you hide it so well. I didn't expect you to be such an important figure."
"Me? I'm just an outlier in the family, an unpopular person among the nobility. What do you think of this country, Annick?"
"If I want to put it in one word, it's stable."
"The church royal aristocrats and emerging capitalists have become the upper class of a super stable society. Just take tonight's party and see that everyone who can come here is either rich or noble. But under the same sky, ports and industrial areas
How many workers work hard all day long in exchange for just one belly, and how many farmers are bankrupted by debt and forced to live in exile in the cities."
"It's difficult to achieve equal distribution of wealth and poverty."
"The fires cooking oil and the flowers and brocades here are all made of the blood and sweat of the lower class people. In the eyes of my father and brother and the gentlemen in both houses of Congress, the people are just the materials to maintain social production, just like firewood is needed to boil water.
I couldn't cut off my identity and I couldn't change this situation, so I hid in the north of the kingdom and taught in a college to make a living." There was a hint of pain in Mr. Russell's voice.
"With your ability, why don't you organize a political party to fight for the welfare of the people?" Annick said.
"Political parties must have sponsors. How do you think my father and brother became the Prime Minister of the Kingdom? Just a count with no real power? Political propaganda, buying newspapers and even paying directly to voters all require a lot of gold pounds.
The Conservative Party and the Whig Party may have differences in governance, but they do not want another political party to share their political cake or even dig into their roots. Intimidation, threats and even assassination, even if I am the Prime Minister's brother
, a pregnant woman will be found to frame me, saying that I am a bastard who abandoned his wife and children. It is easy for people to believe what they see." Mr. Russell said with a bitter smile.
"Then...violent overthrow?" Annick said in his heart, you can choose to burn down all the old forces and rebuild order.
"It's not like no one has thought about it. You have already asked your father for information about extraordinary beings."
"Yes, my father is still a former member of the Scorpion Legion."
"The fighting prowess of ordinary people is nothing compared to the extraordinary. The strongest force in this country is already considered a member of the rulers. You can't expect most people to give up their share of the cake and cut a piece of it.
Come down and give it to your poor compatriots. Can you imagine that your father would distribute his farm equally to the farmers who lost their land? There is no one here who I can tell you. There is a single person in the royal family who can stand up to an ordinary transcendent.
The existence of the Legion's extraordinary beings means that the heads on the banknotes you use may still be alive."
After meeting the mysterious old man on the platform, Annick even suspected that angels in this world really existed, even though the righteous gods no longer walked on the ground since the Black Iron Age.
But it's not surprising that the eight righteous gods might all come down with a divine punishment that day and chop him, a stowaway, into pieces.
"Is this the reason why you favor me? Just because I am not the child of a nobleman or a parliamentary official?" Annick asked.
"That's right. Although I can't change the fate of people around the world, I can still help with my own student future. Little Annick, you don't have a bad heart. I believe in my vision."
Mr. Russell changed the tobacco in the pipe and lit it again, and the smoke rose again in the pipe. This handsome old man turned out to be a frustrated idealist.
