Chapter 20 Desert Traveler

The darkness enveloped the entire Death Desert. In the night, starlight surrounded by a crescent moon dotted the clear night sky, and also illuminated the layers of sand dunes on the ground.
Without vegetation and water sources, the temperature of the dry desert will drop rapidly at night. Without the exposure of the fierce sun, the breath of death emanates from every gravel, and soon forms a layer of gray mist that attaches to the top of the desert, and the wind becomes as if it is cold that pierces the bone marrow.
This is the environment of the country of death. In the breath of death, the undead monsters buried under the yellow sand slowly woke up. They dug out the holes and staggered out. The broken vocal cords made low-frequency hissings, like the sound of the wind, but there was more anger than the sound of the wind.
Skeletons and zombies are the most common undead monsters in the Death Desert. They wander for no purpose and then gather together to patrol in specific areas.
In addition to these low-level undead monsters, there are often some large undeads in the Death Desert, making this desert a forbidden zone for life for a long time.
Even now... magic and firearms are widely used, it is difficult for individual creatures to live in the desert of death to see the next day's sunrise.
But even if the night in the Death Desert is dangerous, there are still people who stay in this area covered by death with various purposes.
The Dosan Railway is an important lifeline of the Florminke Empire. Whether it is day or night, trains are always on it. During the day, most of the undead are afraid of the scorching sun and high temperatures and are dormant under the yellow sand; and when the dead energy rises at night, the undead will become more and more threaten the safety of the railway.
Airships were an important equipment for the Florminke Empire to protect the Dosan Railway. At night, at least four guerrilla airships patrol along the railway line on the 800-kilometer-long Dosan Railway.
The balloon on the upper end of the guerrilla airship is 110 meters long and looks like a slender torpedo. The inside of the balloon is a steel frame, and the outer skin is composite material, which is resistant to high temperature and wear. The lower end of the airship is a cabin with a length of nearly 30 meters, with four dual-mounted rapid-fire cannons inside, which can perform ground-to-air attacks; high-explosive bombs and incendiary bombs are stored in the bomb drop bay.
In addition, on the front, back, left and right of the airship, there are small air defense machine gun cabins, which serve as air defense firepower.
In addition to these weapons fixed to the airship, each guerrilla airship has two to four air combat mages on duty. They are equipped with steam flying wings and can use guns strengthened by alchemy to conduct air combat.
Like most airships, the guerrilla airships of the Florminke Empire also rely on steam to provide lift and power, and the roar of the huge propeller at the tail is particularly clear in the quiet night.
The guerrilla airship patrolling along the Dosang Railway was kept at an altitude of 200 meters and was traveling at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. Several searchlights driven by magic and electricity were constantly scanning both sides of the railway, carefully identifying every undead who might threaten the safety of the railway.
For a few low-level undeads, guerrilla airships ignored them at all. The locomotive of the Duosang Railway has been specially reinforced, and the front face is close to the rails, and the plow-shaped corner armor is also installed. One or two undeads dare to stay on the rails, and the fate is that they are smashed to pieces. However, if there are too many undeads and too many broken limbs are wrapped around the wheels and transmission rods, the train will be unable to move forward.
Some powerful undead may also cause the train to derail.
Therefore, in order to ensure the smooth flow of the Dosan Railway, the Imperial Air Force was included in the key patrol areas along the railway.
When the airship patrolling at night, once a large group of undeads are found approaching the railway, they will immediately launch shelling the undead groups. If there are more, they will throw high-explosive bombs and incendiary bombs. If they can be eliminated, they will be driven away.
The sound of cannons and explosions accompanied the passengers on the Duosang Railway to fall asleep peacefully.
In addition to the Dosang Railway, human activities are also happening in the heart of the Death Desert at night.
There was a temporary camp 40 kilometers southwest of the Great Grave. More than twenty people rested around four campfires. They wore thick clothes to resist the cold of the desert at night and used flames to dispel the invading dead air. They cooked their dinner in an iron pot on the campfire, and the air was filled with a faint smell of meat.
The guns were placed in the places they were most easily accessible. Although the camp was ready to defend against the dead, there was no exaggeration to be careful in the Death Desert.
These people are special groups of mercenaries who use their lives to compete for wealth.
The one who hired them to go deep into the Death Desert this time was Sir Charles, a world-renowned explorer, archaeologist, and inventor. Due to his significant contributions to the field of archaeology and science and technology, Sir Charles was named an honorary noble by many countries and was hired as an honorary professor by many well-known magic schools.
Sir Charles can be said to be the most popular figures of this era and are admired by countless people.
Sir Charles, who is 56 years old, is still very tough, has a thin face, has a mustache under his hooked nose, and has monocles of glasses stuck in his eye sockets. In the quiet desert of death, he did not look like those mercenaries with fear of the dead, but was still immersed in his work. He wore a decent gentleman's uniform and a dark gray cloak to block the wind and sand, sat on a foldable bench, and used the light of the bonfire to write his discoveries during the day in a note with a pen.
At his feet was a map of the Dosan Desert, a cane with a golden hoop pressed on the map to prevent the wind from messing up the map. On the top of the map, it was full of lines and marked circles, showing that Sir Charles had been exploring the Death Desert for a long time.
"Jazz, it's time to eat something."
A girl about twenty years old walked to Sir Charles with a bowl of hot soup and a piece of dry bread. The girl was wearing a canvas denim suit, a triangle scarf around her neck, a ponytail with chestnut hair, a cowboy hat on her head, and a pair of spur boots on her feet. A leather bullet belt was wrapped around her waist, and a yellow round-head bullet was inserted on it. A gun holster was tied to the outside of her right hip thigh, and a silver revolver was inserted inside. A slender leather bag was tied to the left belt, with a piece of the grip of a magic wand exposed on the outside of the leather bag.
The girl has some erythema caused by exposure to the sun on her naked skin, but the skin is extremely delicate and fair in the areas protected by her neck and wrists.
Holding the hot soup, the girl sat on the sand beside Sir Charles. Seeing the Jazz continue to write without raising her head, the girl advised: "Just, when will we leave the Desert of Death... I would rather go to the glaciers in the far north with you than be roasted by the sun here.
Look at my face... If it continues to be exposed to the sun, I'm afraid even magic will not be able to save it.
