Chapter 28 Discussion and Release

"It cannot tell the extravagant love in the world, and it cannot tell the grudges in the world. It is fate for generations..."

When the ending song of "Love the Country and Love Beauty" of "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" sounded, Chen Dayou just finished reading the four articles. Like the glorious leaders in the old movies of the main theme, he gently placed the printing paper on the coffee table next to him, stood up, and slowly raised his palms at Du Qiu, praising: "Dawei called me a few days ago and told me to bring a computer expert over here. I was still half-believing and half-doubted, thinking he was bragging. Now I know what he said is not false. Du Qiu, you are indeed a master, and you are not an ordinary master. These four articles are far-sighted and every word is precious, which has benefited me a lot."

Chen Dawei was a bit obsessed with reading martial arts novels...

Is this fat man completely infatuated by watching the news broadcast?

"Brother Dayou, speak quietly, I'm listening to music!"

Chen Dayou seemed to have no choice but to take the wild girl Wen Ruyu, so he jumped two steps and crossed the area in front of the TV and signaled to the restaurant next to him to talk. Du Qiu got up and followed him, and said politely: "Brother Chen has been awarded, but he is just some immature thoughts."

"Humility is actually a kind of conceit that you want to give up and suppress first. People who are conceited are usually very capable." Chen Dayou joked with a smile while handing a cigarette. Seeing that Du Qiu refused, he took out a lighter and lit it himself, clamped it between his fingers, and said in a very leader style: "You can not only publish these articles, but also make a lot of public announcements, so that everyone on the Internet knows that they may become the Chinese software industry in the future..."

He shook his head halfway through his speech, showed a sarcastic smile, then took a sip of cigarettes, and said, "We use satellites to surf the Internet. The Internet fee is very expensive. The cost of an hour is about ten yuan, so everyone has a time limit every month. The excess has to be paid out for the excess. I am a stingy person. I originally planned to take you to the Internet for only one hour, but now I have changed my mind. You can go to the Internet as long as you want. I will pay the Internet fee."

"Brother Chen is so proud. I'll pay the Internet fee myself. There is no reason in the world that people ask for help, and they still need to pay for money." Several people have read these four articles by Du Qiu, but none of them understand the mystery. Therefore, he was a little suspicious of Chen Dayou's performance and asked: "Brother Chen knows the computer software industry very well?"

"I can't say I know much, but I understand a little bit. I studied computer applications in my undergraduate degree, and later I changed my career to study theoretical physics. Dawei's programming technology was learned from me."

Chen Dawei, who was sitting on the sofa and looking at the source code, did not raise his head, and shook it from afar, which was very cool like a martial arts master. Unfortunately, he was unclear. I don’t know if it was signaling that Chen Dayou was right or that Du Qiu’s code was better.

It turns out that I am a fellow traveler, no wonder I have known the goods...

Both of these two brothers actually love computer technology. They are really strange among the second generation of officials...

Chen Dayou opened the solid wood chair beside the dining table, asked Du Qiu to sit down, and said with a heart-warming voice: "Our Quantum Physics Institute sounds mysterious. In fact, it is a place for elderly people and idle people. There are few scientific research projects and remote places. There is nothing to do. Since I was able to access the Internet last year, I have picked up my old business and write some mini programs from time to time to post them on the Internet to entertain myself."

"I usually like to mess with all kinds of weird software, so I often visit the news groups of GNU and Linux. The application software installed in the study computer almost all uses GPL licenses... Actually, I don't like GPL very much. I always feel that it is too contagious and can't get rid of it as soon as I get involved. The BSD license is too loose and has almost no binding properties. I originally planned to get a license myself, but it has been a long time since I started working. I just read your article and found out that the software license involves copyright, patent, commercial, compatibility and other factors, which is not so easy to do... The CDDL license you proposed is very good, and it is not strong or weak. Just right, what did you think of it yourself?"

"I have thought about some of it myself, and I have also consulted several lawyers."

"No wonder, I think the words are very rigorous, not like ordinary people."

In 1995, free software that opens source code in the world mainly adopts two types of licenses. One is a strong Copyleft license represented by GPL. If the software that uses this license is modified, borrowed or quoted the code and then released, the source code must be disclosed in the form of a GPL license; the other is a tolerant license represented by BSD. The software that uses this license only retains copyright and reputation rights, and the rest can be processed, modified, borrowed or used directly by the user. The source code can be not disclosed when it is released again. If you use an analogy, GPL is like a cold virus, and one is infected with the other, and BSD is like tap water, bathing, watering flowers, making tea, or even reselling it directly, and the tap water company does not care.

When the concept of open source software was recognized in the industry in 1998, hundreds of various open source licenses soon emerged. Among them, the most influential was the MPL license issued by the Mozilla Foundation. It is considered a weak Copyleft license, taking into account the interests of copyright and business, balancing the contradiction between open source and private ownership, and therefore was favored by many companies. Industry giants such as SUN, IBM, and Yahoo have developed their own licenses based on MPL.

The CDDL license that Chen Dayou mentioned was created by SUN in 2004. The full Chinese name is "General Development and Release License". It is an optimized version of MPL. It is essentially no different from the MPL license. It is just that the words are more detailed and rigorous, which improves the reusability of the code. Because Mozilla is a proprietary noun created by Netscape Company, Du Qiu was unable to use the abbreviation of MPL in order to avoid suspicion, so he took out the CDDL with a high-ranking name to make up the numbers.

The two were discussing software licenses here. Chen Dawei also read the source code of 7-ZIP and walked over and said, "Brother Qiu, compared with the code you wrote, I wrote all the garbage. Today I wanted to show you the results of my practice these days, but now I dare not take it out."

"Don't say that, your game is well written."

"It's a good thing! Brother Qiu, the code you wrote is concise and rigorous, and it is pleasing to the eye. It can be understood by a person with a basic foundation. The code I wrote is messy and stumbling to read. No one can figure it out clearly except myself, and it's completely different."

Chen Dayou was a little curious when he heard this. He took the printed source code and flipped through it and praised: "Du Qiu, your code is really standardized, and even the annotations are clear and meticulous. It can be used as a textbook."

"San brother, look at how clever the algorithm is implemented here! I need at least twenty or thirty lines of code. Brother Qiu only used only 5 lines to get it done. The structure is very clear. I just saw it from the beginning and the end without knots at all. Just like when I read "The Smiling and Proud Wanderer" back then, I felt that no line of code was unnecessary, and no line of code was twisted and very smooth. After reading it, I even felt that I could memorize it."

7-ZIP is originally an open source software, with the original work as a reference. If it is still written in a mess, it is a bit ashamed of being a time traveler...

Even though Du Qiu was as thick as a city wall, he was a little embarrassed at this time and explained with a smile: "I am a little obsessive-compulsive disorder. After writing the code, I always have to change it for a long time in order to pursue beauty, and wasted a lot of time. In fact, the code is used, not for reading it. Doing this is just a matter of being idle and asking for trouble."

"You can't say that, it doesn't matter if the mini program is a large software project. If it is a simple, rigorous and standardized code will save the entire team a lot of time and money." After chatting for a while, Chen Dayou's strange and artificial leadership style disappeared a lot, and his whole person became quick and straightforward. He sorted out the four articles and took them in his hand with the source code of 7-ZIP and asked: "Du Qiu, I'll copy these later, right?"

"Yes, no problem."

"I want one more copy, so do I."

"Then let's go, go online now!" Chen Dayou waved his hand enthusiastically, then smacked his lips with regret, and said, "It would be great if I was in the United States now. After these articles are posted online, they will definitely cause a sensation."

Chen Dawei was puzzled and asked, "Why do you need to be in the United States? Isn't it the same on the Internet?"

"There are about 30 million netizens around the world, of which 25 million are in the United States. In other words, almost all the awesome programmers in the world are in the United States. I really want to see what their expressions are on their faces." Chen Dayou paused slightly, and then said with a smile: "Especially the expressions of RMS."

RMS is the abbreviation of Richard Storman. He is the advocate and spiritual leader of free software. Open source software is derived from free software, but it is different from free software. It has a wider scope of application and greater influence. If compared with the characters in martial arts novels, Storman is equivalent to the ancestor of the Shaolin School of Bodhidharma. Du Qiu's actions are equivalent to Zhang Sanfeng, who once studied art in Shaolin but left Shaolin. His martial arts are inherited from the lineage but have their own ideas. These four articles are "Tai Chi Sutra", which has very important historical significance.

Of course, this analogy is not appropriate, because Du Qiu is far from Zhang Sanfeng's realm, and is even more than 100,000 miles away from Richard Storman...

However, Richard Stourman does not like the concept of open source software very much. Poaching is secondly, and the main reason is that it does not conform to his philosophical view...

“Who is RMS?”

Du Qiu answered a quick answer and said, "A great perfectionist programmer."

"Yes, a great perfectionist programmer." Chen Dayou and Du Qiu looked at each other and smiled, and at the same time they felt a sense of mutual appreciation. He turned to ask the two girls and said, "Do you two go to the computer room? If you don't go, just watch TV here. There are videotapes of several new movies under the TV cabinet."

"Really, why didn't you say it earlier!"

"Brother Dayou, go there. My little sister and I don't know about computers, so let's watch TV here."

The institute's computer room has only a dozen computers, but the equipment is much better than that of the Yunda Library. All of them are Pentium machines. It also has the Netscape-Navigator browser that Netscape only released in mid-December 1994. This is the world's first mature commercial browser. Like Windows 95, it is a revolutionary product that has rewritten the history of the IT industry and laid the foundation for the development of the Internet in the next 21 years.

There is no Google, Baidu, QQ, code hosting, no Chinese website, and even a more well-known free email...

The Internet in 1995 was a wilderness...

Du Qiu sat in front of the computer and found that he knew nothing except a few portals such as AOL and Yahoo, and could not do anything. So he simply asked Xian to hand over all the operations to Chen Dayou, asking him to help him send four articles and the 7-ZIP source code in popular news groups such as GNU, Linux, and Netscape. Then he sent it in groups in the form of attachments to some computer experts who are very active on the Internet. After the completion, he asked him to help download a lot of popular articles from major news groups until all the floppy disks brought were filled.

…………

Note 1: Copyleft is a concept corresponding to Copyright. Using this license does not mean giving up copyright, but only allows users to use, distribute and modify freely. However, modified derivative works must also be published with the same license in order to give back to the community.

Note 2: Mozilla was the codename taken by Netscape when it developed the Navigator browser in 1994. It mixed the three words "Mosaic + Godzilla + Killa". Mosaic was the most popular browser in the world before Navigator. Godzilla is the monster Godzilla, and Killa is the slang of Killer. The overall meaning is that the big monster Godzilla is about to destroy Mosaic.

Note 3: The full name of MPL is Mozilla-Public-License, and the full name of CDDL is Common-Development-and-Distribution-License.
