Chapter 34 The Prehistoric Behemoth of the University of Virginia

Louis learned a lot from Fitch, but he did not agree with Fitch's coaching philosophy and game philosophy.

Fitch puts too much pressure on the players, and it may be difficult for veteran players who have experienced the Heinsohn era to adapt to his style.

Even Cowens, who was energetic enough to serve as both player and coach last season, complained more than once about Fitch's strong rule.

The model of high-pressure leadership is undoubtedly Pat Riley.

Louis believes that high pressure cannot last long, and Riley spent 9 successful seasons with the Lakers. You know, in those nine years, the Lakers' worst winning rate was 65% in the year, and the winning rate in the championship seasons was more than 70%.

Winning is the antidote to conflict, but players eventually get tired of it.

When it failed to bring victory, Riley's reign in New York only lasted four years. It was not until he took over the power in Miami that his job stabilized. Because he was both a coach and a general manager/president, he had all the staff in the basketball operations department.

Even if he retreats to the background, the coach is just his puppet. Any player who expresses dissatisfaction with his rule will be sent away without hesitation.

This sharp coaching style did not please Louis.

But Fitch is not like Riley. He is more like a more ambitious Larry Brown. He has a bad temper and is mean to players, but he can say a few wisecracks in front of the media that Brown would never say.

The operating rights have a blatant desire.

Considering that the operating rights of the Celtics are in the hands of Auerbach, it can only be said that he is brave to have an idea about this.

In the opening game, he saw Louis' talent and potential through an observation report.

But as Louis gave him more and more reports, he felt like Louis was coaching instead of him. This was something he could not accept and was determined to avoid.

Therefore, when 1980 arrived, Fitch was determined to create his own style and coach according to his own will.

Louis found that his scouting reports were increasingly ignored by Fitch, and as an assistant coach, the help he could provide was very limited. Fitch always showed a double-faced attitude of valuing him tactically and despising him strategically.

He asked Auerbach for feedback on this issue.

"Everyone knows that you made the game plan. Once he wins, everyone will remember you. When he first arrives, the first thing he needs to do is to establish his authority." Auerbach took a puff of a Cuban cigar and said, "You

It’s affecting the process.”

If so, Louis has reason to suspect that Fitch's tactical contempt for John Long and his complete unwillingness to use Laimbeer were entirely because he recommended these two people to the team.

"Well, I'm really a layman when it comes to coaching." Louis couldn't do it anymore. "Give me some work, I want to go on a business trip."

"Ahem!"

The bishop choked.

"Business trip?" Auerbach asked, "What business trip? You are now an assistant coach!"

"Since Bill wants to establish his authority, and I have hindered him to a certain extent, then I will go on a business trip for a few months, and when I come back, it should be fine, right?" Louis also said,

“I can’t just do one job with two salaries, right?”

Auerbach had to admit that Louis had a point.

"That's fine."

"We will have very high picks in this year's draft, so you should take this opportunity to check out those good prospects, especially the big guy from the University of Virginia." Auerbach agreed.

Louis' eyes scanned everywhere, "Then the funds..."

"You are indispensable!" Auerbach rolled his eyes at him, "Remember, especially the big guy from the University of Virginia!"

Louis believed that Auerbach knew who he wanted to choose.

It's just that when he watches players, he usually goes to the scene to take a look at them. If he thinks he wants them, he will find various ways to make people think he doesn't want them, and then he starts to operate.

"I see you've been holding back in Boston for so long. If you don't tell me all the popular players this time, don't come back!" Auerbach said arrogantly.

"Isn't that too much, all the favorites?"

"What, is there a problem?"

"There's a little problem!"

"what is the problem?"

Louis said seriously: "You have to pay more!"

"Get out of my office!!!" Auerbach muttered angrily as Louis walked away, "This money-minded bastard!"

In order to obtain more funds, Louis advanced funds for two business trips in advance and received US$10,000.

At the same time, he already has a list in his hand, which is a list of popular candidates collected by other scouts on the team.

The list is also accompanied by a brief record of characteristics.

Among them, one name in bold and capital letters is Virginia’s Ralph Sampson (Ralph Sampson C/PF).

Even people like Louie who don't follow high school basketball have heard of Sampson's name.

Legend has it that this man is over 220 centimeters tall, can walk as fast as flying, has terrible athletic ability, can jump from the high post, dribble like a guard, and has the body of a center to play like a shooting guard. By his senior year in high school, he was already famous throughout the United States, and was ranked by every college in the NCAA.

Offering him a scholarship, he announced at a press conference attended by more than a dozen media outlets that he would take his talents to the University of Virginia.

He is considered to be the best high school player after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the best college player after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the ruler of the next era of NBA.

Any scouting report or article introducing him will compare him with great insiders such as Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

This is exactly what Louis was confused about.

It is said that such a figure is like Zion from Duke University in 2019, Wiggins in 2014, Oden in 2007, James in 2003, Duncan in 1997... Any team that gets the No. 1 pick will pick it without thinking.

Player, how come he has no impression at all?

He really had no clue about this guy.

There are times when scouts make mistakes, and there are times when the media makes wild claims, but with this kind of bragging that everyone wants to blow him off the face of the earth, he rarely brags about the wrong person.

Is he as wishless as Wiggins? Or is he like Oden who crashed before taking off?

Louis looked at Virginia's schedule. They had a game against North Carolina State University on Saturday.

He went directly to buy a plane ticket.

Since everyone praises Sampson so highly, there must be a reason for it. Everyone cannot be blind at the same time. If there really is a shortcoming in "competitive desire" like Wiggins, there will definitely be scouts pointing it out. Because like Wiggins

Such players usually show "no strong desire to win", "sometimes being in a daze on the court", "as long as they wake up they are unstoppable" - especially the last one, this is the most dangerous tendency.

It seems to be praising this player, but it can bring strong doubts to people.

What if he doesn't wake up?

What is the truth about Sampson can only be known by Louis himself.

PS: Regarding the short issue, this is a habit I have when writing a new book, one chapter in 2000, one chapter in 3000, and then slowly transition to one chapter in 3000 when it is about to be released. It is popular to write big chapters now, but I am not used to it, so please
