Chapter 442 Bloody Battle of Xuanwu Mountain

Jieshi Guard was one of the 36 guards of the Ming Dynasty. In the 27th year of Hongwu, the guards were established. The guards were in charge of three guards, divided into Pinghai Guards, Jiesheng Guards, and Jiazimen Guards. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a serious Japanese turmoil in eastern Guangdong. General Yu Dayou led his troops to guard Jieshi Guards. The following year, he annihilated thousands of Japanese pirates in Dade Port on the junction of Haifeng and Lufeng, which was awesome to the world. In the 17th year of Chongzhen, when Li Zicheng's peasant army attacked Beijing, Zhang Mingzhen, the general of the Ming army guarding Jieshi Guards, was captured and killed by Su Cheng's troops of Hailufeng's peasant army. At this point, Jieshi Guards were occupied by Su Cheng.

Su Cheng, who was born in a peasant army, was very hostile to the Ming Dynasty, but he was unwilling to surrender to the Qing Dynasty as a traitor, so he always led his troops to the Jieshiwei to resist the Qing Dynasty. After Su Cheng's death in the 14th year of Shunzhi, his son Su Li immediately sent someone to surrender to the prefect of Huizhou and was appointed by the Qing court as the general of the Huizhou Navy. As a result, just a few months later, Huizhou called Hu Qili's troops from Guangzhou to attack. Hu Qili's general Han Chaozong led the dead soldiers to sneak into Jieshiwei Fort at night and captured and killed Su Li, who had become the general of the navy for several months, died or surrendered. The Hailufeng peasant uprising that had lasted for 14 years finally ended with Su Li, a man who surrendered to the Qing Dynasty. A few months later, Wu Liuqi suddenly dispatched heavy troops to attack Jieshiwei, and Han Chaozong was defeated and fled back to Lufeng, thus opening the prelude to the Eastern Expedition of the Taiping Army.

Jieshiwei is the gateway between Chaozhou and Huizhou. It is only fifty miles away from Lufeng City in Huizhou, less than a hundred miles away from Puning City in Chaozhou, and only more than seventy miles away from Huilai City. The official road from Jiangsu and Zhejiang to Fujian to Guangzhou is under the control of Jieshi Guards. Therefore, the first step for the Jidu army to enter Huizhou was to occupy Jieshi Alumina. Even if there was no Taiping Army in the city, the Qing army still massacred the only hundreds of elderly, weak women and children in the city as usual.

The one who stayed at Jieshi Guard was Zhenbiaoyou Camp under the command of Zhang Chao, the general of Nanyang. Shen Yongxing sent a quick horse to ask for help, and he also headed straight for this place. Jidu led a large army to the Jieshi Guard, and Zhou Shixiang also led the main force of the first town, part of the cavalry brigade, and his personal iron guard rushed to Jieshi Guard. However, Zhou Shixiang did not attack Jieshi Guard, but garrisoned troops in Xuanwu Mountain, seven miles northeast of Jieshi Guard, waiting for Jidu's arrival.

There is a stone pagoda built on Xuanwu Mountain. From then on, the tower looks eastward and you can see everything in Jieshiwei Castle. A mile below the stone pagoda is the official road, which passes through Xuanwu Mountain and winds for several miles.

The blind Li carried Zhou Shixiang's flag and inserted it on a high slope in front of the stone tower, so that the Taiping Army at the foot of the mountain could see it.

"The flag is there, and the person is there, and those who have not received the order to take a step back!"

Zhou Shixiang issued a military order and ordered his personal army to supervise the formation. After the war began, no matter who dared to cross the flag and take a step back, all those who dared to take a step back were killed.

At the hillside, Ge Yi held a dagger and picked up the flesh between his teeth. From time to time, he looked at the flag on the hillside, and there was no tension as if the war was about to come. Behind him, more than 7,000 soldiers from the first town had just been replenished and sat on the ground, eating dry food. Suna led the remaining more than 300 cavalrymen under his command to place horses on the hillside, and everything was so calm. Until the Qing army's whistle-strike vanguard appeared in front of him.

"Discover the Qing army!"

The flag bearers on the hillside waved the flags one by one. In an instant, more than 7,000 Taiping troops in the first town stood up from the ground with a "spooky" sound, as if a long dragon suddenly rolled down. The soldiers picked up the weapons in their hands and drove forward under the officer's order until the mountain pass stopped.

The personal iron guards in the rear were also neatly put on iron armor and looked straight ahead with the sword in their hands.

Suna did not get on the horse, but just led the war horse and looked at the other side of the mountain pass, looking calm.

On the 22nd, the general of Tongzhou, the vanguard of the Qing army, the Qing army, was the first to arrive at Xuanwu Mountain Pass. After discovering that the official road at the mountain pass had been occupied by the Taiping Army, he dared not act rashly and sent people to report to the Central Army. In the evening, Ji Du led the Manchu, Mongolian and Han troops to arrive. After observing the terrain, Ji Du ordered all the troops to set up camps and did not launch an attack immediately. That night, the Taiping Army did not attack the camp, and the Qing army did not attack, and they were in peace. Before dawn the next day, the sound of war drums resounded throughout Xuanwu Mountain.

The Taiping Army seized Xuanwu Mountain, which made the Qing army's cavalry unable to play its advantages. Jidu then ordered the Zhili Green Camp to launch an attack. After the battle began, he spared no effort to launch an attack on the Taiping Army's position. The Zhending General Yang Zhenwei's troops followed closely, and more than 3,000 battalions of soldiers rushed towards the Taiping Army amid the sound of the horns that shook the sky.

"Open fire!"

In front of the circular position built along the mountain, smoke filled the sound of guns, and the deafening muskets kept ringing. The first town Brigade C fired the muskets in his hand under the command of Guan Tianshui, the brigade of the first town fired the muskets in his hand under the command of Guan Tianshui.

The fourteen small cannons seized from Wu Zhenhachao kept bombarding the charge of Zhili camp soldiers. Although they were not very powerful, they successfully slowed down the impact speed of Zhili camp soldiers. In front of the formation, the Zhili camp soldiers kept falling to the ground with guns. The white smoke from the muskets filled the entire Xuanwu Mountain Pass, turning the place into a vast white area, like a fairy mountain.

"Don't retreat, rush up, rush up!"

The Zhili camp soldiers rushed to the mountain pass under the supervision of the Manchu and Mongolian army in the rear regardless of the casualties. The archers fired arrows at the Taiping Army a hundred steps away, and the Taiping Army began to suffer casualties. Song Enzeng, a battalion commander of the Bing Brigade A, who was born under the Jingnan Fantasy, loudly ordered his subordinates to open fire, staring at the Zhili camp soldiers who rushed up. The Taiping Army, which occupied the geographical advantage, fully utilized the terrain, so that a brigade of musket soldiers fired the strongest firepower on the fan. The Qing army lacked artillery could not disperse the dense formation of Taiping Army musket soldiers. The courage of the Zhili Green Camp only made the Taiping Army's gun team mess for a while, and then was chopped to the ground by the sword spearmen rushed up from both wings.

When they arrived at Xuanwu Mountain, the gunmen of Brigade C dug a trench more than one person deep at the mountain pass, and the dug out piled up the mud wall in front of the queue, forming a mud wall that could be blocked. Rows of mud gun soldiers exchanged fire. The mud gun soldiers in the front quickly put the mud guns in their hands with the cover of the mud wall, quickly retreated and loaded the ammunition, and the second row then went forward to bombard. Under the tense battle, they could not hear the orders of the officers, but relying on their instinct and regular strict training, they kept firing, retreating, and then stepped forward again. Among them, the Han troops under the Jingnan vassal and the Pingnan vassal performed better.

Zhou Shixiang has been standing on the hillside and closely monitoring the development of the war. The handsome flag behind him fluttered in the wind, which was particularly eye-catching on the hillside full of green color. However, Zhou Shixiang was not worried that the flag behind him would attract the attention of the Qing army. If the Qing army could rush to the big flag behind him, it means that the first battle was defeated and his death date was also here. Yu Shisheng was worried about when he died, so he might as well see how his subordinates fought bravely to kill the enemy. Even if they really couldn't stop the Jidu army, then he would be successful in Xuanwu Mountain.

The attack of the Zhili camp was not smooth, Ji Du frowned and ordered the withdrawal of troops. After leaving hundreds of corpses and hundreds of wailing companions in front of the formation, the Zhili Green Camp hurriedly retreated. Ji Du adjusted his troops' deployment, and ordered the Han army, which also had muskets, to attack the Taiping Army head-on, to attract the attention of the Taiping Army, and ordered the Henan Green Camp and Zhili Green Camp, Wu Liuqi's men to climb up from both sides of the mountain pass, and then attacked the Taiping Army in the mountain pass from a high place. This time Ji Du did not have any further help. All the troops and horses that could fight except the cavalry were sent by him. The brave attack of more than 10,000 Qing troops could break through the defense line of the Taiping gangs no matter what.
