Chapter 334 Thumbs up
"The Little Sunshine Beauty", ★★★★ (Full scores four stars), Roger Albert
11-10,2005
A little girl stared at us with her blue eyes as if she could see our souls. But she was not watching us, she was staring at a beauty pageant on TV, learning the moment the champion was crowned, rehearsing and rehearsing. "The Little Beauty of Sunshine" only opened a few seconds, and we knew it was a movie about dreams and misconceptions.
A few days later, she and her family drove an old Volkswagen bus and embarked on a journey full of troubles from Albuquerque to Redondo Beach. The girl's dream was finally coming true, and they were almost at the hotel where the race was held, and they could see it from the highway and it looked within reach. But they couldn't find the intersection that allowed them to really get there.
The movie said a lot at that moment, not just about misconceptions. In Southern California, which is constantly changing the specific scenery, you always seem to change some scheduled routes, but never fully arrive. There are also the elusive nature of the American dream we pursue, the shortcuts we follow, and the avenues we do not walk.
It is a gentle family satirical film and classic American road film. "The Little Sunshine Beauty" dates back to anti-authoritative, countercultural comedy since the 1970s, such as "Smiley Face" (1975) or "Harnold and Maud" (1971) that satirizes Protestants' fairytale missionary virtues, due to superficial traditional American values.
"The Little Beauty of Sunshine" shows us a world about form, dogma, program, position, diet, step-by-step planning, life planning, reward, retirement group, quantification, selection, classification and coping with the seven emotions and six desires of every ordinary person.
It cannot be divided, either survive without anything or accept a mantra of self-improvement: "Successful and Losers".
The movie begins by introducing us to the Hoovers, Oliver (Abigill Bryslin), who pursues becoming a beauty queen. Her father, Richard (Tom Hanks), is a shockingly inspirational speaker of success, who is pathologically obsessed with success because he has never tried it himself. Oliver's mother Cheryl (Julia Roberts) has a value that family is above everything else, and she is upset to unite the infighting family together.
Grandpa (Alan Akin), Oliver's coach, took time to teach her a set of dances for competition preparations. Grandpa was kicked away by a retirement home because of sucking Hai-Roin. His philosophy is that when you are young, you are a fool, and when you are old, you are a fool.
Uncle Frank (Tim Rose), Cheryl's younger brother, is the best Proust scholar in the world. He just tried suicide because he fell in love with a graduate student who just dumped him for the second best Proust scholar in the world. Oliver's brother (Paul Dano) did not speak for nine months. He was not depression, not completely. He was just addicted to Nietzsche and made a vow to be silent until he was admitted to the flying school. In addition, he hated everyone.
In our preliminary introduction, The Sunshine Beauty does something quite extraordinary: it gives us the only option, from a 25-minute family dinner scene centered around a takeaway fried chicken, we learn everything about the Hoovers. It's a bold move to build the tone of film characters and comedy.
And then…road trip!
You don't need to see a better performance and a better cast, and you can't see it. The cast of "The Little Sunshine Beauty" (from starring to guest appearances) and director Ye Wei, they have a thorough understanding of what self-evident reactions can be interesting when there are differences or jokes, and how much pain should be achieved in the most satisfying comedy.
All the actors act so real. Dano, his dead black eyes are covered with thick bangs, and he is also set to a pale face, which seems to be a teenager's collapse of alienation and disgust. He just needs to tilt his head naturally and almost win the whole house. Hanks, a great actor, contributes another great performance to us, and every shot of his can be amazed.
Roberts, who also played her character alive. Rose is a miracle in wearing "pink and blue striped socks" and he creates a gay man who is both typical and surprising, with his pain like a hard plastic foam surrounding him, less bitterness and more funny.
How does Uncle Frank run? He is an intellectual run. Ross and director Ye Wei must have studied it for this, breaking down its components, and then reassembling it. It is all straightforward and not graceful. It is almost like a real person, but it is not a stupid action, it is just a real character expression.
Akin, Bryslin, Streep, all the actors joined forces with Fantasy, and Ye Wei's cameo also added a lot of color to the film.
Ye Wei's director performance is great. I don't want to say more about his age at 17. Even if he is older than me, this is a great performance: the successful creation of the first 25 minutes is a spectacle; the road trip makes people laugh and feel painful when they are very good; the beauty pageant in the whole film is hard to hit our hearts; and then to the warm end, after the satirical, the reality is gracefully faced with irresponsibility, with an undetectable sadness.
We can see that Ye Wei's talent permeated the whole story, humorous, sad, and exciting. He didn't even have to yell, just do it gently.
In such a movie, everything is moving. "The Little Sunshine Beauty" is a priceless gift with priceless fun and thoughts.
The first review Albert wrote for LMS was very long. A critic would write such a long review only when he was emotionally excited, whether it was to like or scold, and had a lot of things to say. Finally, his definition of LMS was a gift!
This is definitely one of his most unhesitant film reviews. His love for Hoover's family is revealed between the lines, and it is obvious that he likes Deewyne and Frank the most, one Nietzsche, the other one Proust, two scholars, one small and one big, perhaps the two are the characters who make him feel the most immersive.
Especially Frank, the old man also analyzed how Frank, an intellectual, performed it. It was too funny and ironic, and too real.
He also praised Ye Wei very much. In his writing, Ye Wei was a knight who wanted to fight with the evil dragon to save the princess. Everyone thought there was a life-and-death battle, but when the evil dragon heard that he was coming, he immediately ran away. The powerful knight only needed to take the princess away gracefully.
So when the media reported that "Roger Albert praised LMS for being incomparable" and "Roger Albert praised Ye Wei for being great". When Irving Greberman suddenly bombarded LMS, people soon saw that Albert really, very much liked LMS!
Albert published his second review! It was also very long!
The old man's rare behavior was reported by the media and read by movie fans, and everyone gave him thumbs up!
Compared to Irving Greberman's poor film reviews, Albert's two film reviews show what a master's style is and why he can get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Because it is really well written!
The characters have no vitality? The destined sitcom? Ye Wei filmed a defective product. He didn't even bother to mention a "director"? Foreseeable?
He said, no!
"The Little Sunshine Beauty" Chapter 2, ★★★★, Roger Albert
11-22,2005
"The Little Sunshine Beauty" has a group of characters who look very weird, and there is a view that they think they are not true.
Their driving force is their own values, dreams and changes. Each character has a cute side and a bad side. They are all a combination of contradictions. For this reason, these people are so trustworthy and full of strange but vivid vitality.
There is no need to say much about the fantasy performances of the actors. Let me simply add it. Alan Akin's grandfather is not just good, but also seems to be an old friend of mine. I must know such a guy. Abigil Bryslin, who is only 9 years old, gives us Oliver, a little girl who can penetrate the soul with her pure innocence and incredible performance.
When we watch movies, it is usually the easiest to see the actors' wonderful performances or the exquisite stories of the screenwriters. But it is not easy to understand and find what the director has done. It can be said that the director has done everything.
"The Little Sunshine Beauty" is a multi-lane. You can drive in a simple movie-watching lane without thinking too much. Enjoy this quite interesting story and get something. You can also think about a lot, talk a lot, and even watch it one by one, like an anatomist.
But this movie will not make you feel the traces of the director. They are not heavy, they are just elegant and gentle; some factors, scene props, etc. are also very common. Maybe this is the reason, it seems that we don’t have to talk about Ye Wei, he did nothing.
Ye Wei is not a director who does not understand form and show off his skills. "The Wedding Time is Coming" has strong directorial traces like magic. "Exorcist Video" has become easy to do. "The Little Beauty of Sunshine" is a natural thing. He maintains his own style, but does not show off, and only uses it properly.
If we talk about a story, it is actually a tightrope walker story. The beginning is created entirely by a dinner scene, and you will fall down at any time. As a result, we walked over without realizing it and reached the starting point of the road trip. During the journey of change, Ye Wei's understanding and control of the story made everything fit.
Its rhythm is smooth and natural, although it keeps changing, but there is no sense of breakage. Under the always-moving structure, it gradually deepens its appeal and forms the largest shock wave. Oliver started dancing during the beauty pageant. But the bigger surprise is that afterwards, you think that's it. This is the whole movie. It turns around and goes in another direction, a natural direction that you could not have foreseeed before.
The final shot of the film is extraordinary. At the beginning, the film only gives us a choice to know everything about the Hoover family and become a member of the family. In the end, the camera pushes away, it takes us away from the Hoover family, allows us to become bystanders again, and face ourselves, looking for our answers.
The red sky is a world full of dangers and changes, and the busy road is our life. We come and go on the road, not to know what it means. The Hoover home on the road is a kind of life attitude we can have. Sometimes we stop in the private world. You can notice that the bus is gone, but there are obvious car keys on the dining table. They still have dreams and will set off again, but they have more profound values.
These are one of the things the director does. If you want to write a film review like this, "The Little Beauty of Sunshine" can be written into a dictionary with such a thick explanation and analysis book. It is better to leave this work to the teachers in the film school, because I am sure this is not what you want. However, some people say that this movie has nothing but wonderful performances, and I cannot agree with it.
Ye Wei's talent is magical, and there are a lot of interesting things in the film that make you feel "How could this happen?". It is said that he is a genius. He is a genius not only because he knows how to make movies. For a 17-year-old teenager, his knowledge and thoughts in all aspects are the most amazing.
All we can do seems to be shocked by him again and again. If I were a girl, I would probably be crazy about Ye Wei, and now I love him.
This review is what I felt after watching "The Little Sunshine Beauty" in the cinema for the second time. In fact, it has more fun. I plan to wait until it is almost finished and then read it.
Director Ye Wei, well done!
The old man's second film review can be said to be a praising Ye Wei in a very stingy way, but every sentence is reasonable. He also showed his skills in the analysis of the movie, as if he was demonstrating to Greberman and others. Can you see these in sitcoms? What have you watched?
How blind are your eyes so that you can’t see Ye Wei’s talent?
Irving Greberman was really a little ugly. When he published that film review, he might have just been trying to attract attention. After all, he worked for "Entertainment Weekly", and entertainment of the public was his top priority; maybe he didn't expect that he would be beaten like this!
"Slowly, slow, listen to me..."
Thanksgiving is coming soon, don’t worry about it, okay? Otherwise, let’s talk about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 88% freshness and 74% love, and I also say I’ll do it if you say it well; or “Walking with Songs”, 82% freshness and 90% love, I give b+! Talk about them!
Are you still watching what LMS does? Don’t I wait for it to be released for a week before I release the review? Why should I pay attention to me... Don’t fight! I will divide up a few people to fight Jim Ridley and Roger Moore! Don’t fight!
First, Stephen King used a move to lock his throat, and Albert punched him in the face. Then, because of this storm, more critics wrote reviews for LMS. The number of reviews included in Rotten Tomatoes quickly soared from 201 to 5. Some of them were bad, but more people gave a thumbs up and poked Greberman.
The freshness is stable at 97% (229 fresh articles, 6 bad articles, 8.7/10 points), and this cannot change for many years. The collection of 6 articles is already a very high number for an art film. "Glass of Wine Life" has been released for one and a half years so far (96%, 200 fresh articles, 7 bad articles, 8.5/10 points).
This also means that this time, Ye Wei and "The Little Beauty of Sunshine" have settled and conquered the film critics!
Not just North America, but the whole world!
"Ye Wei unruly directed the conflicts, fears, failures and hopes of a family, great actors and soundtracks." 4.5/5, Uruguay's new director Anlique Butcher Butcher, "Uruguay Total Numbers"
"It's a lovely, interesting road movie about a problem family, but you know you've walked the same road. The prodigy Ye Wei once again makes people crazy." 4/4, Paul Burns, Australia's Sydney Morning Herald
"Ye Wei, who has always been mature but rebellious, is not surprising to film "The Little Beauty of Sunshine". If you understand his family background and growth process, you can know where his rebellion came from. When he was still in his student days, he created history with "The Little Beauty of Sunshine", we can feel at ease to embrace happiness." 10/10, Liang Liang, Taiwan "United Daily"
"If you're looking for the best comedy of 2005, or a movie prodigy, I think it's here." 5/5, David Edwards, The Daily Mirror, UK
"It's like a refreshing breeze that fascinates all year round. There are no spectacular scenes, but there are almost perfect everything." 3.5/4, Vincent Malosha, French urbuz website
...
In addition to film critics, millions of fans continue to contribute to imdb-8.5 points and 95% love. Many people also came to Irving Greberman's column message board to refute something, which really made him as popular as Albert for a while. Don't worry, it's just a discussion!
"Then why do you still hit me..."
