Chapter 235: It's not worth it, it's really impossible
Giles watched through the car window as the security guard who was saluting with military salute disappeared behind, pressed the electric button, closed the window, and took his sight forward.
On his knees was a thick stack of newspapers and magazines, with an English version of the South China Morning Post on top.
Giles does not understand Chinese, Cantonese, and Mandarin, and does not seem to be different from him. In order to grasp local public opinion, he could only buy various locally published English newspapers and magazines to learn about the latest developments from it.
Today's newspapers are full of news about Motorola and Taiyu reaching strategic cooperation. Some journals that have not yet reached their time can't help but publish special issues and report them on them.
It is said that the South China Morning Post is a British newspaper and is known as the mouthpiece of the Hong Kong government. Many colonial officials have commented on it and are known for their authoritative and independent reports. It is the largest sales English newspaper in Hong Kong. It is currently also the main reference material for Giles to judge changes in Hong Kong's political, economic and current affairs based on this.
On the front page of this newspaper, a big photo was published, which was a photo of him and Taiyu Technology CEO Mao Xiuliang on the rostrum. In the photo, Mao Xiuliang had a bright smile on his face, but he had a solemn face and a slightly locked brow, looking full of worries.
Next to the photo, there is a bold font with the title "Taiyu enters the field of wireless communications and may shake Motorola's dominance."
Giles smiled bitterly.
He is not a fool, so he can naturally see the strong provocation of the South China Morning Post. But what can he do? Can he still publicly declare as the Hong Kong government wishes and publicly declare that Motorola will not cooperate with Taiyu?
Or will it be shaken?
You really look down on us. In fact, when Taiyu Technology proposed cooperation, our position in the communications field had already shaken!
Outsiders think that introducing Taiyu Technology was a bad move by Motorola, which was to lead the wolf into the house. But who knows that this move was not Motorola's own move, but was forced to do so.
Motorola is responding passively throughout the process.
In the words of the warlord president behind Taiyu Technology, he doesn't care whether he is working with Motorola or another company. As long as he can make money, he will be his partner. If Motorola insists on holding on to the analog wireless network and uses its power in the political and economic circles to prevent him from making money, he will not get a penny of it and will publicly publish digital wireless communication technology.
At that time, even if Motorola does not accept it, other electronic giants will take the initiative to participate and replace Motorola to open the digital mobile communications market. If it falls to that point, not only will Motorola's ten-year hard work be ruined, but it will not be able to collect any investment, and the losses are immeasurable.
When cooperating with Taiyu, at least you can share digital mobile communication technology with them and make enough profits from it.
Let’s change the idea, just think that Motorola has been developing digital mobile communication technology in the past ten years, and now it has finally achieved success. At this time, in order to successfully open up the market, Taiyu Technology has also been brought in, and the two sides have worked together to promote it together.
Giles' face was like eating a bitter gourd, and the corners of his mouth collapsed, looking like he was crying.
He tried hard to convince himself and looked at this matter more optimistically, but the more he wanted to find a reason, the sadder he felt.
What the hell is this!
Why do we say that when we open digital mobile communication technology, we have to bring Taiyu in and share it together?
Are we cheap or full, and we feel that the market is too big and the family can't eat, so we have to generously distinguish others.
This reason is really sad. Not only can't convince myself to accept it happily, but it's even more annoying. My whole heart is surrounded by this indescribable negative emotion. I feel that the sky is dark and I can't laugh at me. The more I think about it, the more I get angry.
In ten years, more than one billion US dollars have been invested just to share it with others!
Who can convince this reason? Who can be so cheap and hand over the information you have worked hard to others, and then happily hold the other party's hand and say: We will be strategic allies in the future!
Ahhhh!
Giles' hands tighter and tighter, pinching the South China Morning Post in his hand into a ball. The raging anger in his chest made him unable to help but shout to the driver: Go, I just don't cooperate with Taiyu!
But when the words came to his mouth, he couldn't say it anymore.
It’s easy to say tough words, but it’s hard to handle. Read a book and read a book.
Rejecting Taiyu Technology's invitation to cooperate, a slander or a middle finger will solve it, but the consequence is that Motorola will completely lose its leadership in the communications field from then on. Ericsson, Nokia, or other companies, when they hear such sincere invitation from Taiyu Technology, they will definitely shake their heads and tails, and immediately rush forward like a pug to please their new owner, and there will definitely be no sense of humiliation.
It seems that I'm still too pretentious!
Whoever said that we are opening analog mobile communications, Taiyu Technology cannot invest in research in digital mobile communications. Our research is about to mature, and they have achieved decisive results in the near future. This is an ordinary thing in the scientific research community, and it can only be said that luck is a mess.
Thinking of this, Giles's throbbing heart finally calmed down a little. Although he was still a little unwilling and a little painful, he was at least willing to accept this reality calmly.
Motorola has not accumulated any digital mobile communication technology.
After the emergence of microprocessor technology, Motorola, as an industry pioneer, invested a certain amount of resources in this regard for pre-research.
The result is that it is too difficult and the timeline is too long.
Digital mobile communication technology is not simple, nor is it too difficult. In terms of analog communication technology, if Motorola considers itself the second, then no one dares to say that it is the first.
From here, it doesn't seem very difficult to convert from analog to digital.
But it is not.
The biggest difficulty of digital mobile communication technology is not the communication technology, but the progress of semiconductor technology is still too slow!
In the early 1970s, when Motorola began to develop wireless communication technology, the first microprocessor 4oo4 was born in the world, and its line width was ten microns and only integrated 2,200 components.
As an epoch-making product, it is amazing, but that's all.
Because for wireless communication networks, this integration is still too small, and as small as the cost of circuit integration, it is not as valuable as using separate components. The most suitable part of its function is in the field of motor drive logic operations and machine tool automation, rather than the extremely complex and huge communication field of circuits.
Then there was the 8o8o launched in 1974, which adopted six micron line width technology and had an integration degree of 4,500 components; the 8o86 launched in 1978, which integrated 29,000 components, and reduced the line width to three microns.
At this time, Motorola finally began to face up to the opportunities brought by semiconductor technology to wireless communications.
However, such integration still cannot afford wireless communication, especially the decoding circuit of the user-side handheld phone.
According to calculations, the semiconductor chips that integrate logic circuits, decoding circuits, and control circuits must reach at least one million in scale before they can be used together. The current semiconductor integration level of 30,000 is only one-thirty-third of the minimum requirement. It is okay to integrate some auxiliary circuits, but it is impossible to integrate the core circuits.
According to Moore's Law, every eighteen months, the degree of semiconductor integration doubles.
From this calculation, it will not be possible to achieve the minimum integration level of one million required for wireless communications at least until the early 1990s.
This is why Motorola is always moved by the progress of semiconductor technology, but ultimately remains unswervingly following the analog network technology: it is not unwilling to do so, but it cannot be done!
It will not be enough to open special chips until the 1990s. So for so long from the 1980s to the 1990s, did you do nothing and wait for the window to be opened?
Is this a company that aims to make money?
Motorola also admitted that simulation technology is very backward and will definitely be eliminated by the times. However, if it is backward, it will be enough for at least a long time to bring huge profits to the company, which is enough.
But no one expected that Taiyu Technology ignored the easiest simulation technology to realize, focused on digital technology, and even made it for them.
Taiyu also encountered the problems that Motorola encountered.
However, they did not think about waiting for semiconductor technology to improve, but they learned through the principles of the digital core circuit part, and then divided it into four parts and split it into four integrated circuit blocks. Although each chip requires an additional twenty-five percent of the peripheral circuit, relying on this smart and powerful design capability, these four independent chips can realize real-time data transmission, collaborate with each other, and jointly complete the data decoding function!
According to the information submitted by Taiyu Technology, this combination chip is only 30% lower than a single chip!
Even if they are bragging, even if they can achieve 50% of the operating efficiency of all core circuits in a single chip, they have unquestionable practical value.
But this is not a successful application of semiconductor technology, but a victory in design!
This kind of strong design ability is definitely top-notch!
It was because of the real feasibility of this one-point four chip that ATT was moved and decided to abandon the analog network and switch to the digital network. Motorola was helpless to admit the failure of analog technology and agreed to cooperate with Taiyu Technology.
Of course, even if it is disassembled into four chips, the integration level of a single chip is still as high as more than 300,000, which is still a height that semiconductor technology has not yet reached.
In terms of semiconductor technology, Intel is the strongest, with the current maximum integration level of about 80,000 to 90,000. Motorola, who is a peer in the industry, is not very clear about the specific research progress, but can roughly guess the other party's level.
According to this progress, by the middle of next year, they will probably be able to produce chips with an integration level of around 150,000.
Then in another eighteen months, that is, one and a half years, it is not difficult for Intel to make integrated circuits with an integrated level of more than 300,000. After that, other semiconductor manufacturers will master the manufacturing process within one to two years, and the prices will drop significantly.
This is the fundamental reason why Bell Labs has positioned functional chips with practical value in two to three years after verifying the technology!
So there is still plenty of time.
When two companies reach strategic cooperation in a certain field, they are never able to reach a negotiation once or twice. Instead, they need to repeatedly negotiate terms, dispute, and wrestle the wrist. Only when acknowledging the other party's abilities, they will reasonably consider the other party's interests and requirements, make corresponding concessions, and gradually improve the last one by one.
It took several months and years to decide on cooperation to finally sign a contract with legal effect.
Giles doesn't plan to reach negotiations soon. Taiyu has advantages in digital technology, but Motorola has greater advantages in analog technology.
He has the patience to slowly grind with the other party.
When necessary, the head office will also send a large number of technical support teams and legal teams to discuss with Taiyu Company slowly.
