Chapter Twenty-Three: White Lies

Ning Ziqian placed Xia Mengying in his arms on the sofa in the living room, turned around and went to get the medical kit.

Xia Mengying sat on the sofa, and the first thing she did was to look for her mobile phone in her backpack. It had been all night, and her mother and the others must have been anxious.

There were 47 missed calls, including those from Xia Dahai, Fang Jingyi, Xia Xiaoxue and Qi Zhiming. Sun Hui alone made more than 30 calls.

More than 30 text messages, most of which were birthday wishes, and several were sent by Sun Hui. Last night, she stayed out all night, and her mother was very worried. In order to reassure her, he lied and said that she had spent the night at a friend's house. Uncle Sun

She must have been worried. Xia Mengying thought about it and called Sun Hui first.

"Is it Mengmeng?"

The voice over there sounded a little urgent, and through the phone, I could feel the worry and anxiety of the person speaking.

"Uncle Sun, it's me." Xia Mengying responded weakly. She hadn't even drank a sip of water since she woke up from the hangover. Her throat was as dry as if there was a fire burning, and her voice was hoarse and rough.

.

"Where were you last night? Didn't you say you would be back before twelve o'clock? Why aren't you back now? Did something happen?"

Xia Mengying has always been a very well-behaved girl and rarely worries Fang Jingyi. So many things have happened in the past two days, and she stayed up all night last night. How can she not worry?

"No." Xia Mengying glanced at her injured ankle and Ning Ziqian, who was standing in the room with his back to her, and denied it.

"I called Zhiming and your classmates last night, and they all said they didn't see you. Whose birthday did you celebrate with? Don't you know your mother will be very worried about you?" On the phone, Sun Hui said

Stern questioning.

"I'm not a classmate, but a friend you don't know. We all drank too much. Uncle Sun, I'm really sorry for making you worry."

"What friend?" Sun Hui became more and more stern and dissatisfied, "Mengmeng, this incident has dealt a great blow to your mother. Her health was not good to begin with, and now she needs people to take care of her the most, especially you. You are now

It's more important than her life. If something happens to you, how can you let her live? She went out all night and there was no one on the phone. Do you know how worried we are? Uncle Sun knows that you feel bad too,

But no matter how uncomfortable it is, you can't associate with those dishonest people."

"I see."

Xia Mengying choked, trying her best to suppress the grief in her heart, and replied calmly without any explanation.

"Don't do this again next time. Call your mother. She is very worried about you. Come back soon."

Sun Hui hung up the phone after saying that. Before hanging up, Xia Mengying let out a long sigh. She heard the beep coming from the phone and leaned back on the sofa, letting tears well up in her eyes.

He closed his eyes tiredly.

Things happened one after another, and the pain and pressure she endured was no less than that of Fang Jingyi, but she could only keep all the pain in her heart.

"Why don't you explain it clearly?"

Xia Mengying opened her eyes. The tears in her eyes made her vision blurry and very unclear. She rubbed her eyes and saw Ning Ziqian standing in front of her, holding a water glass in his right hand.

The five fingers surrounding the transparent glass are slender and very beautiful.

Ning Ziqian saw Xia Mengying open her eyes and handed the glass of water in her hand to her.

Drink cleanly.

"Explain what?"

After Xia Mengying drank the water, she put her lips against the cup and lowered her head. After a while, she made sure that the emotion on her face was not too low. Then she put the cup on the coffee table and looked up at Ning Ziqian and asked.

road.

"You didn't celebrate your birthday with your friends last night."

"You eavesdropped on my phone call!"

Xia Mengying stared at Ning Ziqian angrily and asked dissatisfiedly.

It wasn't that he was deliberately eavesdropping. He was standing behind Xia Mengying just now. There were only two of them in the huge living room and it was very quiet. He could naturally hear clearly what Sun Hui said there.

Ning Ziqian didn't explain, but suddenly took Xia Mengying's left hand. Xia Mengying was startled, and subconsciously shook off Ning Ziqian's hand, "What are you doing?"

She turned sideways and leaned back, staring at Ning Ziqian with eyes that became wary and uneasy again.

Ning Ziqian had no choice but to point to the palm of her left hand, "You're bleeding."

Xia Mengying followed the direction of Ning Ziqian's fingers and looked down at her open palm. She didn't know when blood appeared on the white bandage, little by little, like plum blossoms. She never noticed it.

This was pointed out by Ning Ziqian, and he immediately felt a throbbing pain from the wound. He probably held on to the railing too hard when he had sprained his ankle.

"It's just a little injury."

Xia Mengying smiled awkwardly and said it didn't matter.

"Why don't you take care of yourself at all?"

Ning Ziqian frowned slightly, and regardless of whether Xia Mengying was willing or not, he forcefully took her hand and began to treat her wounds.

"This was an accident. I rarely get injured."

Xia Mengying felt slightly sad, and she paused for a moment to explain. After hearing such words twice from a stranger, she felt inexplicably moved.

"I'm going to call my mother. I don't have to avoid it for the sake of you helping me take care of the wound."

Xia Mengying smiled, picked up the phone with her right hand, and called Fang Jingyi.

"Hey, Mom." When Xia Mengying spoke, she deliberately lowered her voice.

"Why are you so quiet?" Over there, Fang Jingyi's voice reached Ning Ziqian's ears through the phone in Xia Mengying's hand.

"I'm at my friend's house now. We all drank too much last night and they are still sleeping. I'm afraid of waking them up. I'm sorry, Mom, for making you worry. I will go back as soon as possible."

As Xia Mengying spoke, she glanced at Ning Ziqian, who was sitting next to her. He was looking up at her, half-smiling but not smiling. Xia Mengying felt ashamed, so she looked away, said a few words to Fang Jingyi and hung up the phone.

"Haven't you heard of a white lie?"

Xia Mengying raised her chin and forced herself to be confident.

"Does it really not matter if you are misunderstood like this?"

Ning Ziqian stopped what he was doing and sat up straight, with a calm expression.

"Otherwise? What do you think I should do?"

Xia Mengying's face was filled with sadness and helplessness.

How could it not matter? But what can we do? Just know it in your heart, why do you have to ask?

She lowered her head and glanced at the bandaged wound on her left hand. It was really hard to dislike a man like this.

Ning Ziqian did not speak, his deep eyes filled with deep distress, sweeping over Xia Mengying like a torrent. He suddenly stood up, squatted at Xia Mengying's feet, reached out and pinched her swollen ankle.
