Chapter 36 Difficulties

"Dad, do you really want to grow licorice?"

As soon as Li Jie got home, Ma Defu walked straight up to him before anyone had a chance to take a sip.

"Yeah, what's wrong?"

Looking at his father who was calm and composed, Ma Defu suddenly began to hesitate again. He originally planned to persuade his father to think about it carefully, because their teacher once mentioned that most of the licorice on the market are wild licorice and artificially cultivated licorice.

The proportion is very small.

The proportion of artificial licorice is small, ultimately because the medicinal effect of artificially cultivated licorice is not as good as that of wild licorice.

From Ma Defu's point of view, planting licorice is not a particularly good choice. Compared with licorice, which has an uncertain future, Ma Defu believes that wolfberry is undoubtedly a better choice.

Ning Province is the origin of wolfberry, and it has been cultivated for more than 500 years. In the Compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen, a medical scientist in the Ming Dynasty, listed Ning Province's wolfberry as a top-grade product, saying that "the wolfberry used as medicine throughout the country is produced in Ningxia."

'.

Whether in terms of medicinal value or nutritional value, Ning Province's wolfberry far exceeds other domestic producing areas.

In addition, as the origin of Ning Province, wolfberry planting technology has long been popularized on a large scale. During the planting period, you only need to strictly follow the manual, and basically there will be no big risks. Moreover, Ma Defu himself happens to know how to grow wolfberry

.

"If you have something to say, you have something to say."

When he saw Ma Defu's hesitant look, Li Jie probably guessed what he was worried about.

It is nothing more than worrying that the licorice seeds will not survive.

"Dad, you...you..."

After hesitating for a long time, Ma Defu finally swallowed his words because he suddenly remembered his father's 'magic', especially after immigrating to Diaozhuang, his father seemed to suddenly become omnipotent and capable of doing anything.

A few days ago, Uncle Daniu brought his wife and son to Jintan Village to celebrate the New Year. Later, because his son was too young, he suddenly came to Jintan Village with a completely different climate. His delicate body could not adapt to it. Once he arrived,

Jintan Village began to vomit and have diarrhea.

Jintan Village is a newly classified natural village, and the infrastructure facilities are not complete enough. There is neither a rural health center nor a designated doctor in the surrounding area. If the villagers encounter a headache or fever, they usually tolerate it and get over it.

If he couldn't bear it anymore, he would come to see his father. The reason why he came to see his father was because his father had learned a few skills from a barefoot doctor before. Although he only learned a little bit, he was still the best doctor in Jintan Village.

Someone who understands 'medical skills'.

Uncle Daniu was in a hurry and found his father out of habit.

As a result, his father gave him three strokes, five divided by two, without even prescribing any medicine. He just squeezed the child a few times, and the child's condition miraculously improved.

Curing an acclimatized child was not a big deal in the eyes of the villagers, but Ma Defu didn't think so.

Strictly speaking, acclimatization is not a disease. It is just that a person goes to a strange environment and is temporarily unable to adapt to the local climate conditions and eating habits.

When Ma Defu was in technical secondary school, on the night of the report, he felt completely uncomfortable and suffered from vomiting and diarrhea.

After being tortured for several days, Ma Defu finally couldn't bear it anymore and went to the hospital.

Later, the doctor told him that it was acclimatization, not a disease, and he would get better naturally after a period of time.

It was precisely because he had suffered from acclimatization that Ma Defu knew that in this situation, there was no specific medicine and he could only rely on his own body to slowly adapt.

However, with his father, "get used to it slowly" seems to have become a joke.

Seeing Ma Defu swallowing his words, Li Jie waved his hand.

"Okay, since everything is fine, go and help your brother move the things to the warehouse."

"good."

Upon hearing this, Ma Defu subconsciously raised his head and walked out.

The next day, the licorice planting kick-off meeting was held as scheduled. Most of the people attending the meeting were villagers who were interested in growing licorice.

Therefore, Li Jie basically managed to get rid of this group of already shaken people without any extra effort.

On the day of the kick-off meeting, a total of twelve households of villagers signed up to plant licorice. Then on the second and third days, people came to sign up one after another. This situation continued for a week. Finally, Li Jie counted the total number of farmers who planted licorice.

There are twenty-three households.

Thirteen of the households planned to plant ten acres, while the other ten households were more conservative and only planted five acres.

After counting the number of applicants, a new question arises.

Although the profit of growing licorice is very high, far exceeding that of growing potatoes and corn, the cost of growing licorice is also very high.

First of all, the first point is the cost of seeds. The price of ordinary licorice seeds on the market is about 20 yuan per pound, while the better ones are around 50 yuan, and the top varieties cost more than 100 yuan.

One acre of land usually requires about 20-30 kilograms of seeds. According to this calculation, even if the most common seeds are used, the cost of seeds alone for one acre of land will be five to six hundred.

Secondly, whether you are growing food or cash crops, you need something different - fertilizer.

To grow licorice, in addition to necessary farmyard manure, top dressing is required about two to three times a year on average, and approximately 20 kilograms of fertilizer per acre of land is required.

In the early 1990s, the price of fertilizer was not expensive. One pound usually only cost a few cents, and a 50-kilogram bag of fertilizer cost less than 100 yuan.

Although price is not an issue, the yield of chemical fertilizers is a big issue. Common fertilizers include nitrogen fertilizer, phosphate fertilizer, and potassium fertilizer.

Among them, nitrogen fertilizer is the type of fertilizer with the largest consumption in chemical fertilizer production in the world, and the widely circulated urea is a type of nitrogen fertilizer.

At the same time, nitrogen fertilizer was also the first fertilizer that was heavily invested in production in my country. Medium-sized nitrogen fertilizer plants were established as early as the mid-1950s. By the 1980s and 1990s, the output of nitrogen fertilizers basically met domestic needs.

However, compared with nitrogen fertilizers, the development of the domestic phosphate fertilizer industry lagged far behind. Until the early 1990s, production capacity was still insufficient and it had to rely on imports.

As for the development of potash fertilizer, it is even weaker. In 1990, the domestic output of potash fertilizer was only 200,000 tons, which was far from meeting the market demand.

Growing licorice does not require the most nitrogen-producing fertilizer, because the roots of licorice can fix nitrogen.

Therefore, the most suitable industrial fertilizers for licorice are phosphate fertilizers and potassium fertilizers. However, the production capacity of these two fertilizers is limited. Even if farmers have fertilizer tickets, they may not be able to buy these two fertilizers.

If there is not enough fertilizer, the yield per acre of land will inevitably decrease, the output will become smaller, and the profits of farmers will also become thinner.

However, Li Jie didn't talk too much to the villagers about the fertilizer issue. He just passed it by. He was afraid that talking too much would scare the villagers away.
