Chapter 3 A Potato

Li Jie stood up and walked to the door and opened the cabin door. In an instant, the sound of the waves became louder, and there was a sound of seagulls chirping in the distance.

I looked down and saw that the meal was already placed at the door.

A dark potato, about the size of a baby's fist, was placed on the deck without a bowl or paper wrapping.

This is today's lunch, and the same is true for the previous meals. Each meal only has one small potato, and the arrangement is exactly the same.

Li Jie sighed slightly, rubbed his stomach, and then leaned over to pick up the potatoes on the deck.

People are iron and rice is steel. Although one small potato is not enough to eat, eating some is better than not eating at all.

He had not eaten for two days, and the last meal he had was when he left home.

He didn't eat before because he felt wronged.

A potato is enough for a meal. It's not that he has never eaten potatoes, but he can't accept potatoes placed directly on the deck.

‘Ouyang Yi’ was born in a scholarly family, and his family was well-off since he was a child. In this era when middle school graduates were considered intellectuals, he was able to finish college, and it was from a prestigious school like Northern Qing Dynasty. This is evident from his family background.

Although his living standard after the founding of the People's Republic of China was not as good as before, he still had enough to eat and wear. Occasionally he could have a Western meal and drink two glasses of red wine to refresh himself.

He is a decent and particular person, and he can't stand this kind of behavior of putting food directly on the ground.

This boat is quite old, and the hull is covered with traces of time. For a small fishing boat like this, fishermen hardly clean the deck every day.

Over time, the entire deck turned black, and the gaps in the deck were filled with a fishy smell.

Even ‘Ouyang Yi’ couldn’t stand this smell.

Therefore, he didn't eat a single bite of the previous meals. He couldn't get over the hurdle in his heart and felt very uncomfortable.

However, this was before, and Li Jie doesn't care about this now.

The sky is big and the earth is big, filling the stomach is the biggest thing.

He picked up the potatoes, put them in his arms, wiped them, and ate them in a few mouthfuls. After eating the potatoes, Li Jie clicked his tongue. Such a small potato was really not very hungry.

But now he has nothing to do.

It was too late to wake up. If the time could be advanced a month, or even a week, he would have enough time to solve the problem of mistaking Lao You.

Immediately afterwards, he stretched for a long time and moved his hands and feet. After holding it in the cabin for several days, his bones were almost falling apart.

He had been staying in the cabin before, not because he was restricted in his freedom of life, but simply because he was sulking.

In addition, he doesn't want to accept strange looks from others.

The boat was very small. It was usually a fishing boat and occasionally a transport boat. Besides him, there were three fishermen on board.

These three people are all out-and-out fishermen who make a living at sea all year round. They have basically never read a book. The only one who is literate has only graduated from elementary school.

Li Jie learned from his memory that when he first boarded the ship, the three of them were frightened and helpless when they learned that he was Lao You.

The leader even refused to take him to the island for fear of getting into trouble.

In the end, the higher authorities forcibly ordered them to carry 'Ouyang Yi' to the island, so they took him with them.

In the next two days, 'Ouyang Yi' had almost no communication with the three people on the boat. He stayed in the cabin and did not go anywhere.

Only when he was extremely thirsty would he step out of the cabin to drink some water.

On the other side, a tall fisherman noticed what had just happened. He not only saw Li Jie walking out of the cabin, but also saw him standing on the deck and moving his body.

Then, the fisherman suddenly showed a surprised look, quickly pushed his companion aside and pointed his finger.

"Old Huang, look, look over there, that old right is eating."

"whispering sound."

The short fisherman beside him turned over and adjusted his sleeping position without raising his eyes.

"I've said it before, he has the bad temper of an intellectual, and he still goes on a hunger strike to protest?"

"How about it?"

"We didn't do anything, and he couldn't hold it anymore."

"well."

The tall fisherman sighed and said with a look of dismay.

"Old Huang, please stop saying a few words. This man is already pitiful enough. Look at the clothes he is wearing. Are they affordable for ordinary people?"

"I'm afraid his life will be difficult in the future."

Although the tall fisherman has never read any books, he still has a skill in recognizing people.

The man on the deck was different from them at first glance. He was fair, clean, and polite. At first glance, he looked like the kind of person who had never endured hardship.

Unlike them, they have been exposed to wind and rain, and their skin is tanned. Even if they put on dragon robes, they don't look like emperors.

The short man raised his eyelids and glanced at his companion, feeling annoyed.

"You are still worried about others, let's worry about ourselves first. Recently, the harvest has been getting worse and worse."

"If this continues, I'm afraid it will be difficult to even fill our stomachs."

The tall fisherman touched his belly and sighed again.

Lao Huang is right, their life is getting more and more difficult now. That Lao You only eats one potato per meal, which is what the higher-ups require.

The person who sent the old right off seemed to have mentioned some kind of contradiction between the bourgeois right and the people, some kind of confrontation, some kind of irreconcilable life-and-death contradiction.

The tall fisherman doesn't understand these things. He only cares about whether he can fill his stomach and feed his family.

Because of this, he has no prejudice against ‘Ouyang Yi’. He is the one who knocks on the door and calls ‘Ouyang’ for dinner every time.

"Old Huang, do you still have any potatoes there?"

The tall fisherman glanced in the direction of the deck, and then pushed his companion next to him.

"No more."

The short fisherman mumbled back, then turned around, leaving his back to the tall fisherman.

"Lao Huang, I know you have it."

The tall fisherman pushed him again: "Lao Ou didn't even eat a meal before, and you took away all his potatoes."

"No, I ate them all!"

The short fisherman answered as he crossed his arms across his chest, fearing that the tall fisherman would discover the potatoes he had hidden.

He has many children in his family, all of them half-grown, and they are eating them up. The food rations in his family are simply not enough.

Therefore, whenever he went out, whenever he had the chance, he would quietly collect the leftovers and take them home to support his family.

"Old Huang, I don't want more, just give me a potato."

The tall fisherman asked Lao Huang for potatoes, not because he was not full or because he was greedy, but because he felt that the old right man had not eaten for two days and only eating one potato would not be enough.

"No more!"

The short fisherman hugged him a little tighter. He was born in the year of Pixiu, and there was no reason for anything that went into his pocket to come out.
