Chapter 78 Interrogation (Part 1)

The next morning, in the northern part of Ajaccio, there was an inconspicuous double-storey pub.

"Oh, damn, these rednecks run shoddy hotels."

Dr. Maria sat up from the bed in a room on the second floor with a painful expression. He couldn't help but beat his sore back and shoulders, and cursed to himself.

As the Earl's personal physician, not only did he enjoy wealth and wealth in London, he could at least wake up in a soft cotton bed every day.

Instead of the damp, moldy, creaking and broken wooden board under me now.

Not to mention that he had to squeeze into the same bed with another fat follower, otherwise this tavern would not be able to accommodate all the followers.

Maria muttered dissatisfiedly, while moving her still aching body, she walked towards the lobby downstairs.

The style of this double-story tavern is common throughout Europe. The first floor serves as a lobby for entertaining drinkers, and the second floor has rooms for accommodation.

When Dr. Maria came to the lobby, the only dozen or so tables here were already crowded, and judging from their attire and language, they were all British people who came with the Reasonable.

According to the count's order, unless they received the count's summons, they had to stay in this tavern.

"Hey Maria, so you're here too."

As soon as Maria walked down the stairs, a follower with a sharp mouth and monkey cheeks immediately stood up and shouted at him, which immediately attracted the attention of other followers.

Maria glanced at the attendant, ignored him, and found a seat by herself to sit down.

He had always regarded himself as a superior person with medical education, and he looked down on these idiots from the bottom of his heart.

And these ordinary followers also knew this about Maria very well. When they saw that this self-righteous doctor was crowded in this shabby tavern like them, they all had fun with him:

"Oh! Doctor Maria, I thought you were with the Count."

"Hey, I heard that even that bald clown is following the Earl. Why are you here?"

"Hahahaha, Doctor Maria, why don't you shave your hair and dress up like a clown?"

For a time, the entire tavern was filled with a happy atmosphere.

Maria looked at them with itching teeth and couldn't help but muttered:

"My lord, the Count, has been in good health recently, so he didn't let me follow him. What do you know?"

"In good health?"

The follower with the sharp mouth and monkey cheeks at the beginning put one foot on the table, exaggeratedly raised his voice and said loudly:

"I see, it was you who wanted to bleed Lord Count last time and frightened him."

Someone in the crowd immediately answered:

"That's right, you used leeches to suck your blood, making me unconscious in bed for three days and three nights."

"Hahaha, even lighting sheep dung for adults to suck, their noses almost couldn't smell anything."

...

"You! You! What do you know? I have been to a university!"

Dr. Maria's face turned red with anger, and he pointed at the booing people and argued incoherently.

However, his argumentative voice was soon drowned in the continuous laughter.

Just as everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves wildly at Maria, they heard a clang and the door of the tavern was suddenly pushed open.

The laughter suddenly stopped, and the British people looked at the door in confusion. The tavern had been booked by them all, and a no-entry sign was hung at the door.

Who on earth broke in without looking too far.

I saw four smiling men standing at the door. They were all dressed like waiters, and they were holding a large silver tray in their left hands, which was filled with wine bottles.

The leader said intermittently in broken English:

"Welcome, friends who have come from afar, we, the hospitable Corsican people, will share our wine with you, all for free."

The British people looked at each other, but they still understood what this man meant, especially the free wine, which made them excited.

The waiters didn't waste any time. They placed the trays on the table and opened all the wine bottles at once.

"Oh! It's still gin! I didn't expect to be able to drink this wine after leaving England."

A brave attendant stepped forward, picked up a wine bottle, looked at the label, and found that it was gin, also known as gin, which was very popular in England.

"Have a drink, friends."

The head waiter said with a smile.

Having said this, the British people did not refuse, whistling and cheering, and stepped forward to pick up the wine bottles and fill their glasses with the strong liquor.

Although they are the Earl's entourage, the people who stay here are basically not people of high status, so it is not easy to drink such strong drinks on weekdays.

Even Dr. Maria, after hesitating for a while, joined the procession of pouring wine with a wooden cup.

In just a moment, not a drop of gin was left in the dozen or so bottles of gin. Most of the British people drank until their faces turned red and they were unsteady on their feet. Some of the weak drinkers were already lying on the table and fast asleep.

.

Because of his hesitation, Dr. Maria only got half a glass of wine, but he could only sit down and sip it depressedly.

The four waiters patiently watched the British people distribute all the spirits, and then slowly put away the bottles.

One of them smelled the strong smell of alcohol in the tavern and said in English with a mocking look:

"What a bunch of country bumpkins, as if they've never had a drink."

He didn't speak loudly, but his insulting words were still heard by many British people.

Dr. Maria also heard this and couldn't help frowning at the waiter who made the mocking comment. He always felt that something was wrong.

"Hey! What did you say?! Hillbilly? We're from fucking London!"

One of the attendants, under the influence of alcohol, slapped his hand on the table with a loud bang, pointed at the waiter and shouted.

The waiter twitched the corner of his mouth, took a step forward arrogantly, pointed at the British people and said:

"You bunch of English bastards, please be more honest!"

"What?!"

"What did you say?!"

"You want to fight, don't you?"

As soon as the words were spoken, the atmosphere in the tavern immediately exploded. The drunken British people immediately couldn't stand such words, so they rolled up their sleeves and gathered around.

"What? You still want to hit me? Try it if you dare!"

Seeing about a dozen British guys gathered around him, the waiter became even more arrogant and shouted loudly at them.

"damn it!"

An Englishman couldn't bear the shouting any longer, so he stepped forward and knocked the waiter to the ground with a punch.

When the others saw this, they also followed up, yelling and cursing, pushing the other three waiters to the ground, and punching and kicking them wantonly.

Some people even picked up empty wine bottles and chairs, pushed through the crowd and prepared to throw them at the waiters on the ground.

The tavern instantly became chaotic, with endless shouts and curses. Some British guys even punched their own people because they were too drunk.

Doctor Maria beside him swallowed uneasily and did not join in the fight. He had already discovered that something was wrong:

The waiter was obviously a Corsican, so why did he provoke them in English? It was almost as if he did it on purpose.

Just when Dr. Maria discovered this, the door of the tavern was suddenly pushed open again.

Followed by dozens of heavily armed patrols with muskets filed in, led by a young man holding a short knife. He said solemnly to the people in the tavern with a stern face:

"Friends of England, this is Laurence Bonaparte, defender of order in Ajaccio, and I order you to cease immediately the criminal acts that are being carried out."
