Chapter 1720 Bloody Battle at Hacksaw Mountain (2)
"Brothers, cheer up. I want to make sure that the other side's bastards are busy while the sappers are working."
After Creed finished talking about the deployment, a series of brief confirmations sounded one after another in the communicator.
"Engineers, move only under the cover of smoke. I don't want you to take unnecessary risks. Is that clear? If we lose you now, we might as well just pack up and go home."
"Everyone would hate that, sir."
The engineer sergeant then joked.
"We never fail to fry gophers."
Hearing his voice, Creed could imagine the man's wry smile now. He knew the other person very well. That man was a gambler and a notorious adventurer, which made him the natural choice for the leader of the engineering team.
, but it also makes him unpredictable.
"I'm serious. It won't do me any good if your engineers die. Hurry up and open a nice big hole in that wall for me."
"We'll get it done, sir, you'll see."
The fire support team was now in position and raining down heavy explosive fire on the battlements. Creed saw the bodies of the careless defenders falling from their heights like stricken birds, each time one of them struck.
When it reaches the rocks, there is a sickening crunching sound.
"The mortars are ready."
The communication lines crackled.
"The engineers are in position, waiting for your orders, sir."
"Mortars can shoot, fire rapidly, and fire three rounds first."
The next second, there was a familiar, almost musical whooshing sound from the left and right, as mortar tubes dropped explosives onto the guardrail.
Creed watched with satisfaction as the dilapidated stone fortifications exploded outwards, sending out rains of broken bricks and dust. Pale corpses were also thrown outwards, hitting the mountainside like bags of raw meat.
"Let's light up a cigarette."
The soldiers immediately began throwing their smoke grenades into the wet depressions between their cover positions.
"Engineers, move up!"
"Yes, sir!"
Creed watched the sergeant and his men rush from their cover to the protective mesh. They didn't have much time to wire the lines, so they had to use time bombs, so time was extremely tight.
Mortars poured inward fire, squeezing the surviving defenders against the top of the wall and leaving them in too great a hurry to pour heavy firepower on the smoke-filled engineers below.
Soon, however, they noticed the smoke below, and to make matters worse, the rain and wind carried the smoke away faster than Creed expected.
One of the mutants shouted something, and the others leaned over the top of the wall and opened fire.
There were howls in the smoke as some of the sappers were hit.
"Engineer, report!"
"Two of my boys are dead, sir, where's our covering fire?"
"Mortar, keep pressing."
Creed shouted loudly about filial piety.
"The engineers and soldiers are under threat."
However, the mortar could only fire so fast, and the protective smoke dissipated further, leaving the engineer naked and exposed to fire from overhead.
"More smoke, now!"
Creed roared loudly, and more smoke grenades were thrown, but one engineer was hit hard on the thigh and fell down while moving the bunker.
Creed saw one of the man's companions turn to help him, but the engineer captain yelled angrily, and the soldier reluctantly turned around and picked up a nearby melta bomb.
The remaining Cadian soldiers shot as hard as they could, but the dilapidated guardrails provided excellent defensive cover for the mutants, and after seeing their comrades fall screaming onto the rocks, few of the mutants continued to be careless.
Be careless and make yourself a conspicuous target.
Instead, they poke their heads out briefly and shoot straight down.
Out of a team of eight, only three engineers were left working frantically at the bottom of the wall.
"Sir! More time, damn, I've lost too many people, I need more time!"
Even as the captain said this, another of his men fell silently, his hat being shot through the top.
Creed felt sick and almost dizzy.
"Withdraw first!"
he said loudly.
"Damn it, we'll look into other ways."
At this time, the last of the two engineers left screamed and spun, his face covered in flesh and blood, and only the captain was left.
"No time, sir!"
The engineer captain replied. He stood alone at the bottom of the wall, his hands working frantically. Above him, more than a dozen mutant guns were aimed.
He's running out of time and has only one option left.
"Good luck, you guys."
He left his last words on the communicator.
"Keep your head down, you know how to do that, right?"
After saying that, he activated the melta bomb
"Anil!"
Accompanied by a dazzling white flash, Creed became completely deaf in an instant, and the surrounding air became extremely hot, almost tearing his lungs apart.
Then, rocks rolled down the hillside and dust flew up.
Creed coughed and tried to stand up, not waiting for the dust to settle.
Jalan Kyle grabbed the edge of the breastplate and dragged him to his feet.
"The damn castle was blown apart!"
In Creed's mind, he saw the face of veteran Anil staring at him with a sly smile. Many emotions poured out of his mind at once, like a flood that suddenly burst its banks, but he knew he had to put these things away.
Set it aside, at least for now.
"Cadian."
He shouted firmly:
"You know what to do!"
With a loud battle cry, the Cadian soldiers rushed towards the gap. At this time, due to the destruction of the supporting points of the protective wall, large areas of the western and southern sections of the protective wall collapsed, which in turn caused the entire fortress defenders to collapse.
In the chaos, Creed took advantage of the momentum and rushed into the fortress with more than a hundred people, occupied a firepower point and started shooting at the back of the enemy on the west side of the wall.
The mutants could still maintain their morale by relying on the city walls. When the protective walls were broken, their defenses immediately collapsed. The firepower on the west side quickly weakened, and the main force of the 8th Cadian Regiment and the 861st Krieg Regiment quickly covered up.
The 8th Cadian Regiment is a typical Cadian infantry regiment, consisting of 8,000 experienced soldiers composed of 24 companies, equipped with a large number of artillery, Chimeras and even Leman Russ.
The 861st Krieger Regiment is an infantry regiment of 10,000 people, and one regiment is attached to a heavy artillery company. The total force of nearly 20,000 people from both sides rushed directly to the fortress of Hacksaw Mountain, instantly flooding the enemy who had spent a lot of life in the past few days.
They didn't even take a step towards the fortifications and rushed into the fortress in one fell swoop.
"Issue instructions to each company. There is an independent fortress inside the enemy's fortress. Clean the outer area first, and then concentrate on attacking the enemy's main fortress."
As he gave the order, Creed fired several shots at the enemy troops, who rushed toward his men along the wall, preparing to save their precious artillery from the Qadian attack.
