Chapter 469 Battle for Yangon

Mrauk U City is located at the mouth of the Lemu River in the Arakan region. After the British took control of the Arakan region, they supported a local king to manage the local natives.

This Mrauk U city is the capital of Tuwang.

There are not many British people in this city. They are mainly concentrated in Sittwe Port. There are officials stationed here by the British colonial authorities, as well as a garrison of 500 British troops and 3,000 Bengali servants.

This is the entire strength of the British in Arakan.

On April 17, 50,000 Burmese troops suddenly crossed the Arakan Mountains and came over.

They quickly occupied the Arakan area with overwhelming momentum. The local Arakan soldiers simply could not resist the Burmese soldiers.

In just two days, soldiers from the Kingdom of Myanmar captured the city of Mrauk U.

Galloja, who led the expedition in person, ordered the killing of the native king supported by the British, and then sent out 10,000 soldiers to besiege the port of Sittwe.

He led a main force of 40,000 to kill Burma along the coastline of Arakan.

British troops are mainly stationed along the line of actual control between Lower Burma and Upper Burma.

In order to prevent the Burmese from coming out of the jungle to attack, the British also ordered the servants to build bunker defense facilities.

Now Galloya bypassed this place directly and came to kill from the undefended Arakan area.

This roundabout tactic is used beautifully.

This was certainly not what Garaya thought of, or even what the ministers of the Kingdom of Burma thought of.

This idea was proposed by Mr. Li, the Chinese envoy.

Every time he faced this envoy, Mr. Li, Galloya would have some incomprehensible feelings.

Mr. Li almost always has a neither humble nor arrogant expression in front of him.

He is not as groveling as the ministers of Burma, nor is he as domineering as the envoys from the higher country.

In short, being with him makes me feel inexplicably at peace. If Mr. Li hadn't been an envoy, Galloya would have wanted him to be the Prime Minister of Myanmar.

After the British defenders in Lower Burma learned that the Burmese in the north had sent troops, they hurriedly withdrew their troops from the northern defense line and transferred them westward.

In fact, the best way for the British at this time was to encircle Wei and rescue Zhao, and then go directly north to attack the Burmese capital, Ava.

Now that Myanmar's army is out, the rear must be empty.

But now the British don't have many troops in their hands. Mainly because their navy is currently at the ports of Bengal and Calcutta, guarding against sneak attacks by the Taiping Holy Army.

The military strength in Lower Burma is similar to that in Arakan.

The thousands of Bengali servants were not enough for defense, and there was no way to launch an attack.

When the British moved their army to the west of Lower Burma, they collided with the army led by Galloya before they started to set up defenses.

"Kill them." Galloya directly ordered the whole army to charge and kill them.

Although the soldiers on the Galoa side are also equipped with flintlock rifles, their training is far inferior to that of the Bengali servants under the British.

Those servant armies could at least form a slightly messy line formation.

The soldiers on Galoa's side could only shoot individually, and could not even fire a salvo.

Galloya couldn't do anything about this, he simply didn't have time to train these people.

It would be good if they could use these muskets correctly.

Fortunately, there were many of them, so all they had to do was charge in a wave, fire a shot when they got up, and then go up with the bayonet to kill them.

Sure enough, the British were defeated and retreated in the end. However, Garoya only killed some Bengali servants.

The British abandoned their army of servants and fled back to Rangoon as if they had greased their feet.

Seeing that the arrogant British people were defeated by themselves.

The morale of the new army under Garoya was greatly boosted.

You must know that for decades, the Burmese people have been suppressed and beaten by the British.

They had long been afraid of the British.

Now these British people actually ran away in front of them. This was the first time that the British people were so embarrassed in front of the Burmese people.

In five days, Galloya led the Burmese people to Yangon.

Along the way, small cities that originally belonged to the Kingdom of Burma and had just been occupied by the British for two years surrendered.

People in Yangon were panicked, and people ran towards the port.

The merchant ships in the port were now overcrowded and became a hot commodity, and people wanted to leave by ship.

Jim is an Englishman trying to make a living in Yangon. He always wears a smart suit and hangs around the port, hoping to meet businessmen who have just arrived from the East.

His job is to act as an agent for these foreign businessmen and help them introduce business in Myanmar.

He has started a family in India and his wife lives here with him.

In Britain, a man like Jim would be a pauper.

But here, anything he can do can help him live a superior life.

Many white people here are like Jim. If they can live a good life in Britain, who would go to the colonies to make a living?

Especially here in Myanmar, the climate is hot and humid and mosquitoes are everywhere.

Caucasians were originally born in a cold climate environment. Their skin is extremely sensitive. It can be said that they are the least suitable race to survive in tropical areas.

"Jim, are we going to escape like them?" asked a white Indian woman.

This is Jim's wife Janea, a woman from a high caste in India.

"Yes, Zhenya, those barbaric Burmese people are coming. God knows what they will do after they break the city?" Jim said.

"Then I'll pack my things now." After saying that, Zhenya went back to the small building where they lived to pack their luggage and valuable belongings at home.

"Hey, Jim, Sir Sean has an order for all white men in the city to participate in the defense war against the Burmese." At this time, a soldier saw Jim standing at the door and hurried over to deliver the order.

When the colonies were attacked, the British would recruit expatriates from the colonies to help defend them. This was their common method.

It turns out that these expatriates can play a very good role at critical moments.

Because many of these people have military service experience, at least they basically know how to use muskets.

Sean had just returned from Calcutta when he received the news of the Burmese attack, and he cried out in his heart that it was bad luck.

When he was in Calcutta, Ramsay told him that if the Burmese launched an attack, they must hold on to Yangon.

After receiving news of distress here in Kolkata, the navy will be dispatched to provide support.

As long as they have naval support, the Burmese cannot capture the port no matter how many they have.

Therefore, Sean is now organizing troops everywhere to defend.

In addition to a battalion of British infantry, Sean only had less than a thousand servants left in his hands.

The servants who had been left behind in the previous encounter suffered heavy casualties.

Now this small army is still a gathered and defeated army.

"Sir, the Burmese have entered the city." An officer reported.

Sean placed the thousand servants in the outer city of Yangon for defense.

Now that the outer city is lost, all those servant armies are probably doomed.

"Why so fast?" Sean asked with a frown.

"It was the Burmese people in the city who rebelled. They attacked our defense forces from behind," the officer reported.

"As expected, these natives are unreliable, so evacuate everyone into the port area." Sean ordered.

The port area is an area where the British live. There are almost no Burmese living here, so there is no need to worry about anyone causing trouble.

Here is the final defensive position Sean prepared.

There is also a small fort in Yangon Port that can provide limited support to the infantry.

This running platform was built by the Burmese. After the British occupied it, they made simple modifications and replaced some artillery. This time it finally came in use.

"Your Majesty the King, the British have withdrawn towards the port." One of his generals reported.

At this time, Garroa still had 20,000 troops beside him, and some of the troops were scattered to attack the cities occupied by the British.

However, except for Yangon, other places are managed by the Burmese themselves, supported by the British.

This place has only been occupied by the British for two years, and the people still recognize the Kingdom of Burma, so it is very easy to occupy it.

Next, 10,000 people will attack the Tanah area.

The Dana area is a coastal area, so even if it is captured, it will not be easy to defend.

But that is not something that Galoa has to consider, because after taking it back, it will be handed over to the Renaissance Army.

This place was the place that we had negotiated with the Renaissance Army to hand over to them.

Galloya would not go back on his word. He hoped to hand over the Dana to the Renaissance Army, so that the British would target the Renaissance Army.

It would be best to let the British go to war directly with the Baath Army. In this case, the pressure on the Kingdom of Burma will undoubtedly be much less.

Now Garoya must find a way to capture Yangon. Yangon is the center of Lower Myanmar and the most important port city in the Kingdom of Myanmar.

This place means to Myanmar what Shanghai means to China.

"Let the army not stop, the British are not large in number, overwhelm them." Galloya ordered.

At the position in the port residential area, Jim took off his suit jacket and wore a shirt.

The originally white shirt was now covered in mud and dirty, making Jim look like a homeless man.

But Jim didn't have time to think about this now. He was holding an old Baker rifle. There was no way, it was the only one in the arsenal at the port.

Not having touched a gun for many years, Jim's hands were a lot rusty. It took him several times longer to load the gun just now than it did a few years ago.

Jim hid behind a parapet made of earth cane baskets and sandbags and stared nervously at the street ahead.

Not far from him is a field artillery position.

Janea is already on board, which is good news for Jim.

The family members of every overseas Chinese who apply are given priority to board the ship.

This is Sean's order. The purpose is to allow more people to actively participate in the defensive battle.

Using this method, Sean gathered more than a thousand people. Among them were many expatriates from other European countries.

This is almost all the white people here in Yangon.

"Kill..."

A group of Burmese soldiers appeared on a distant street corner.

They shouted and rushed over without any formation.

A steady stream of Burmese soldiers followed, seemingly endless.

"Bang!" The nearby artillery position fired.

A blast bomb exploded on the street, punching a big hole in the middle of the charging Burmese army.

But it was quickly filled by Burmese soldiers nearby.

At this time, their king was holding the formation from behind, and these soldiers had no choice but to charge with their lives.

"Get ready," the temporarily arranged commander ordered.

The militiamen raised their muskets one after another, holding the gun with one hand and holding the trigger with the other.

"Aim." According to the enemy's distance, the commander ordered again. The militiamen pointed their guns forward. They fine-tuned their guns and put the target into the crosshairs.

"Let go." Following the commander's order, half of the soldiers fired their muskets, and then quickly stepped back half a step to reload their ammunition.

A large number of people suddenly fell in front of the dense formation of Burmese soldiers on the opposite side.

Immediately afterwards, the other half also took careful aim and fired.

The Burmese's forward momentum was finally curbed somewhat.

The battle lasted for twenty minutes, but the Burmese soldiers never broke through the chest-high barricade.

Although these barricades are only chest high, they are very cleverly designed. In addition, the Burmese's impact surface is too narrow, so the Burmese soldiers can never rush through.

"Ah!" A scream came from beside Jim. A white militiaman covered his ears and squatted on the ground screaming.

It turned out that the Burmese soldier on the opposite side fired a bullet that knocked off his ear.

Blood seeped out from between the man's fingers and flowed to his wrist.

"Campbell, are you okay?" Jim called.

This man was a tavern owner in the port, and Jim was a regular customer there, so he was naturally familiar with him.

Perhaps because his ears were covered, Campbell did not hear Jim speak.

Jim ignored him and continued to load and shoot.

There was a time when the Burmese were about to advance to the barricade.

Fortunately, there are still some grenades stored here at the port. These are old antiques.

Jim and the others also made a cameo appearance as grenadiers, and finally drove the enemy back.

"This group of cowards couldn't even break through the barricades, so they went to kill the general who was leading the troops." Seeing that his troops who were attacking the port had actually withdrawn, Galloya was very angry.

He resolutely ordered the head of the general who had just led the army to be beheaded.

"Aung Min Tun, take five thousand men and horses to break through the barricade on the opposite side, can you do it?" Galoa said to a general beside him.

"Your Majesty, I will never come back until I conquer the place." Aung Min Tun was a young general with a proud heart, and he agreed immediately.

"Okay, I'll give you five more cannons to help you blast away the barricades." Galoa was very satisfied with Aung Min Tun's answer.

Jim finally breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the Burmese soldiers charging on the opposite side finally retreat.

Is it over that easily?

The injured Campbell has been taken down to be bandaged.

Everyone took a rest and everyone left without the officer, because the enemy might come back at any time.

"Concealed... shelling!" the officer shouted.

Five artillery pieces suddenly appeared at the end of the street.

The Burmese had apparently loaded their artillery pieces.

There was a burst of artillery fire. The artillery was not far from the barricade and could almost be aimed and fired.

"Boom, boom, boom..." The earthen basket made of rattan was blown away by the bombing. Without the restraint of the rattan basket, the soil contained in it flew away.

The cannonball hit the barricade with a dull banging sound, which made Jim's ears ring a little.

Next, the Burmese charge began again.

It seems like there will never be enough of these damn monkeys to kill.

This time the enemy's formation in front was a little sparser.

But this makes it easier for them to approach the barricade.

The British militiamen behind the barricades were much less efficient at killing the enemy.

"Ah!" A dark-skinned Burmese man jumped onto the barricade and stabbed down with his rifle drawn.

The two militiamen raised their guns and stabbed him as well.

"Pfft..." Two white militiamen thrust their bayonets into the chest of the Burmese soldier at the same time.

The Burmese man was held up by the rifle, his body tilted in the air.

At this moment, several Burmese soldiers rushed onto the barricade again.

More and more Burmese soldiers rushed over.

Hand-to-hand combat narrowed the gap between the two sides.

The militiamen who stood at the front finally couldn't hold on anymore. After they collapsed, they rushed towards the port.
