17. Beggar Xiao Que

In a corner of a slum in Changsha City.

The smell of sewage and dirt wafts from all around, making it even more pungent in this dark and narrow alley. Most of the houses here are dilapidated, and there are even many disfigured corpses that have been eaten by wild dogs.

There are many homeless people and beggars living here. They rummage through the garbage every day, or pick up some wild vegetables, bark, and insects to satisfy their hunger and survive in this disaster year.

It's not that they don't want to work, it's just that many of the people here have lost certain organs of their bodies. Some walk on one leg, some have empty sleeves, and even worse, only the eye sockets are left. There are rough scars, but these scars go directly from the corner of the eye, as if a piece of it was cut out by something...

Begging to sustain one's own life has become so commonplace among these homeless people and beggars that it is not worth making a fuss about.

Xiao Que walked out slowly carrying a wooden bucket full of food. Looking at the endless ruins and endless darkness outside, his mood became heavier and heavier.

I don’t know if they haven’t eaten for a few days, so they should be able to hold on.

Thinking of this, Xiao Que couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt in his heart, hating himself for not bringing food earlier.

At this time, two old men in shabby clothes were crawling out of the pile of filth. Their cloudy eyes were shining in the dark, and their lips were trembling slightly, showing that they were very excited at the moment.

"Oh, who is this kind person?"

"Thank you, thank you."

When the two of them saw the wooden barrel filled with food, their eyes were full of greed. They quickly knelt down in front of Xiao Que, shouting words of thanks, their eyes were moist, and their faces were twitching constantly, showing their Excitement and excitement.

Xiao Que hesitated for a moment, and after seeing that the food in the barrel was satisfied, he poured some food out.

The leftovers made a gurgling sound on the ground and exuded a strange smell, but to the two old men who had been hungry for a long time, it was like nectar and dew, making them swallow their saliva.

"Uh...Gulu..."

There was a rolling sound in the throat, and the trembling hands finally reached for the food on the ground. The two of them picked it up carefully, for fear of breaking it, as if it was the most precious treasure.

"Eat quickly and go back to rest early after eating."

Xiao Que said.

After hearing Xiao Que's words, the two of them immediately started chewing.

"Woo...Woo..."

While chewing, the two old men made more swallowing sounds, and their faces were covered with tears. Their excessive joy made them cry bitterly. The sound of crying was particularly clear in this quiet night, making the entire shabby street Their cries echoed.

They look very ugly when they eat, but for the extremely hungry beggars, eating is the happiest thing. It is the only pillar of their lives. Even if death comes, they are not willing to give up.

Xiao Que sighed and shook his head.

There was a complicated look in his eyes, but it was quickly covered up, and then he turned and left.

I was once one of these beggars, and perhaps it was because I became Wei Ming's servant that I was qualified to look down on others like this.

After thinking about it, his pace quickened a bit.

Not long after, he came to a dilapidated house. When he looked up, he saw that the door was closed and the windows were blocked by thick wooden boards, making it impossible to see what was going on inside.

Xiao Que stood at the door, stretched out his hand and knocked on the door.

"Bang, bang—bang—!"

One short and two long codes mean that he is back.

The room was still silent, and no one answered at all.

But just when Xiao Que was about to continue knocking on the door, the door suddenly opened, and then a figure rushed out and hugged Xiao Que directly, holding on to his clothes with both hands.

"Woooooooo..."

This was the cry of a girl. She hugged Xiao Que tightly, as if she was afraid that Xiao Que would disappear if she let go.

"Brother, you are finally back... Wuwuwu... I am so worried about you."

Xiao Que looked at the girl who was hugging him and crying. His face couldn't help but froze. A hint of tenderness appeared in his eyes. Then he patted the girl's shoulder gently and said softly:

"Okay, don't cry. Isn't my brother back?"

His voice was gentle, with a kind of magic power, which made the girl in his arms gradually stop crying.

In fact, Xiao Que and this girl are not related by blood. It's just that Xiao Que is a little older, so he calls Xiao Que brother.

The girl raised her head and looked at Xiao Que with tearful eyes, looking pitiful.

"Wow, brother, why did it take you so long to come back? I thought you didn't want me anymore and I would never see you again."

The girl said with sobs, her voice revealing a deep sense of fear.

Just when Xiaoque smiled slightly and was about to answer, he was interrupted by another childish voice.

"Boss, you are finally back."

At this time, a group of children walked out of the room. They were probably a year or two younger than Xiao Que. They all looked up at Xiao Que, their eyes full of admiration.

"Wow, I brought back so much food, it's really amazing!"

A younger child immediately noticed the food in the barrel, his eyes suddenly lit up, and he shouted excitedly.

His voice made the other children also look at the food, and a strong look of joy appeared on their faces.

"Shh——"

Xiao Que made a silent gesture, indicating that everyone should go into the house before talking, and he took the lead to walk into the house.

Seeing this, the children quickly followed Xiao Que into the house.

The space in the room was not large. Apart from the two creaking broken beds, it was filled with all kinds of waste, including firewood, tiles, wooden boards, etc., making it look very messy.

After repeatedly confirming that no one was around, Xiao Que didn't forget to close the door tightly, and then he breathed a sigh of relief.

In this slum, countless people starve to death every year. Here, food is equal to life. Fighting and fighting are normal. No one will think there is anything wrong with this. Everyone is just trying to survive.

"You guys can eat, you're welcome."

Xiao Que turned around, took out a wooden bucket full of food, handed it to them, and then sat aside.

Naturally, the children were beggars just like Xiaoque, so they naturally did not dislike the leftovers. They scooped up the food from the barrel and ate it hungrily, looking eager to eat.

"Slow down, no one will compete with you."

Xiaoque shook his head helplessly. The seemingly harsh words came out of his mouth full of endearment.

But the children seemed not to hear it and continued to devour it as if they would not stop until their bellies were burst.

This is not their fault. They have been abandoned since birth and have been begging for a living since childhood. It is rare to see so much food, so it is inevitable that they will be too excited.

At this moment, their faces were all covered with smiles, as if they had received the best gift in the world. This was also the happiest thing for them tonight.

Xiaoque looked at the group of children quietly. They were all so hungry that they were skin and bones, with sweat and dirt still on their faces. However, they did not let their fate dictate them, and they still worked hard to live.

Xiao Que felt a little sour in his heart. He wanted to change this unreasonable phenomenon, but his ability was limited.

"Brother, what's wrong with you? Why don't you eat?"

A childish voice suddenly sounded. The girl noticed something strange about Xiao Que and asked with concern.

Xiao Que raised his head and glanced at the girl. Then he shook his head with a wry smile and said:

"I'm not hungry."

The girl looked at the tiredness and haggardness on Xiao Que's face, and felt even more uncomfortable.

She stretched out her hand to wipe the dust from the corners of Xiao Que's mouth and cheeks, and said in a slightly coquettish tone:

"I'll feed you."

After saying that, the girl took the wooden bowl, scooped a spoonful of food, and put it into Xiao Que's mouth. Xiao Que did not refuse and opened his mouth to eat it calmly.

"Next time, I will bring you some better food."

Xiaoque smiled, feeling a little guilty inside.

He is just a servant now, and he doesn't have much food to eat in a day. There is no salary, so he can only bring some leftovers back to these children.
