506. Shackles

"I'm sorry, everyone, for making you do these things."

Lin whispered as she looked at the swarm of insects approaching and the endless wasteland.

Her eyes fell on the three camel bugs, and the robot's good vision allowed her to immediately identify the three people.

Not seeing Lu Jian's figure, Lin felt as if some low-voltage pulses were generated in her logic circuit. This weak current was like human sadness, making her feel lost.

But soon, Lin raised her head again.

Next to her, a huge loudspeaker for broadcasting was erected. Lin looked at all the robots that could still move out of the future city, and she spoke.

"The creatures in front of you, please stop harming humans, otherwise we will take coercive measures."

This sound came through the loudspeaker and was transmitted to the swarm of insects, but obviously, these insects, who were drowned in their instincts, naturally ignored it, and the torrent did not weaken at all.

"When it is detected that humans are under threat, the robots in Future City will carry out rescue operations in accordance with the procedures."

Lin said.

She glanced at the charging robots.

The companions who had been together day and night finally met someone who needed protection after hundreds of years of watching.

In tens of thousands of days and nights, Lin imagined countless of their last moments.

Stopping operation due to irreparable damage, or losing energy and falling asleep.

She never thought that she would be able to welcome the last moment in this way.

At this moment, in the wasteland outside the future city, the communication systems of all robots are operating at maximum power. With Lin as the center, a dense intelligence network has been established. Correspondingly, there is a steel defense line to resist the insect swarm.

"Everyone, we have had billions of discussions, and many of the companions who participated in the discussion have fallen asleep. During the discussion, I have always adhered to a point of view, that is, human beings have not abandoned us, and they will come back one day to make us happy.

This place is rejuvenated, so that every sleeping companion can wake up again."

Lin's voice was transmitted to each robot through the communication network, and then sounded from their sound-producing devices to Shuang Xin's ears.

She couldn't understand why these robots would do this for an illusory thing.

A few minutes ago, they were even considering taking the insect swarm into the future city and causing the robots to suffer a disaster.

For Shuang Xin, any commitment has a time limit and conditions.

If she were asked to wait here for hundreds of years for those who might never come back, she would definitely not stick to it.

"Now, I am very happy, because humans have really come back, and we will light a fire for humans to light up this dark night."

The next moment, in front of the steel defense line formed by robots, flames rose.

The fuel for these flames is the banners on the commercial streets, the signboards of the noodle restaurants, the artificial trees in the ecological park, and everything that can burn in the future city.

Even the corpses of the devoured robots ignited flames.

The flames burned the insects, igniting some of the insects that tried to cross the defense line. The bright flames illuminated the desert that had become dim due to the sandstorm, and reflected the faces of the three people.

"This is the bonfire party. I still remember that people would dance around the bonfire to celebrate the passing of the old year and the arrival of the new year."

Speaking of this, Lin's voice became weaker.

As a communication center, her processor contains all complex information, wind, terrain, and temperature to maximize the use of the environment and block the advancement of the insect swarm.

This is a calculation that even a supercomputer cannot complete, and requires the use of sensors on every robot.

This calculation also caused Lin's logical processing unit to be overloaded. She was like a human who overused her brain. Her individual consciousness had become unclear, leaving only endless calculations.

As long as this calculation continues for a while, there are only two endings waiting for Lin.

Either the energy is completely exhausted by calculations and it enters a permanent sleep.

Either the processor is overloaded and completely burned out.

Even if it is not burned and is replenished with energy, her "personality" as a robot will no longer exist.

But facing this situation, there was a smile on her face.

"You, you don't have to do this."

Shuangxin murmured to herself, she had never imagined before that, in this desolate world, the thing that made her feel warmest was not the human beings, but the shining flames of these robots.

When humans in the old era chose to abandon themselves and become a swarm of insects, they left behind a group of robots that were more like humans than they were.

"No."

Lin seemed to hear Shuang Xin's words, and said in the softest tone before the processor that gradually became hot was completely burned.

"You must never harm humans at any time, nor can you stand by and watch humans encounter danger."

She recounted the shackles of humans in the old days on robots.

"I like this rule very much, because it means that we will never harm humans, and we will never helplessly see humans being threatened. My favorite, most favorite humans."

"This is the oath we are most proud of."

She calls this shackles "the oath".

"It's not worth it."

Shuang Xin said, she was getting closer and closer to the future city, and she could clearly see the skirt of the robot girl on the roof of the building swaying in the strong wind.

"This is just a restraint and restriction set by humans to prevent you from rebelling. This is not your original will."

"It's not worth staying here for hundreds of years or even sacrificing yourself for such an illusory thing."

Hearing Shuang Xin's words, Lin shook her head.

"No, it's worth it."

The voice of the robot girl is light, just like a song that puts a child to sleep.

"Because this is the meaning of the oath. It will remain unchanged despite the changes in the sea."

"Because we met you, all the waiting has come to fruition."

"Thank you for making our existence meaningful."

"We have discussed two billion times whether humans will come back. Each discussion has a large number of signals circulating, resonating at a frequency of tens of thousands of hertz. It is quite long for our thinking, but this time, we decided to leave.

It only took a moment for all the companions to be rescued by Future City."

"Rather than falling asleep because of running out of energy, this is our greatest pursuit."

The defense line formed by the flames was quickly destroyed by the insect swarm. The robots fell apart and were swallowed up in the flames. The once stagnant insect swarm began to move again.

Shuang Xin and others entered the future city and passed by Lin.

"Thanks."

Lin said, and all the remaining robots rushed towards the insect swarm.

She knelt down on the ground, adjusted her body's functions to zero, and tried her best to provide the last line of defense.

Even as his consciousness became blurred, raindrops fell from the sky.

The water droplets that had not lasted for a hundred years fell into her eyes like tears.

The insect swarm flooded the future city.
