Chapter 30 No one in the world can stop me from bragging
"The little novice monk is rude, Taoist Xuanqing is so righteous, he doesn't have the same knowledge as you, and you're not grateful, why do you still speak wildly!"
"Go, go, don't let the little monk come out and embarrass you."
"Master Ci'en hasn't said anything yet. You are a little novice monk, who is also speaking with Taoist Xuanqing?"
Amid the condemnation of the little monk, Zhang Xuanqing, the person involved, was in a daze when he thought about what he said before.
Perhaps it was the so-called obstacle to knowledge and views in Buddhism, or perhaps it was "a leaf covering the eyes and not seeing Mount Tai". Before Zhang Xuanqing said that, although those words were in his mind, he had never paid attention to them.
This was nothing at all, but after today's talk, Zhang Xuanqing discovered that the method of practicing the innate Qi seems to be recorded in the Taoist scriptures.
No wonder the ancients would accept disciples. I am afraid that the most important thing is to "review the old and learn the new". Some problems that you don't notice can be noticed when you talk to your disciples or ask questions by your disciples.
Simply put, it is just mutual benefit.
It was not until Master Ci'en said the Buddha's name that Zhang Xuanqing woke up from his meditation. He heard Master Ci'en say to his disciple: "Guangzhen, don't say anything more, just follow the teacher."
"But..." Monk Guangzhen looked at Zhang Xuanqing with unwillingness on his face. How could this Taoist slander the Buddha easily let go?
Zhang Xuanqing saw this and laughed and said, "Little monk, please ask you, you said I slander the Buddha, do you know what Buddha is?"
He had asked the two great men who were the first to trouble him. The two great men avoided answering the excuse that they were rough people. At this time, the two great men were standing behind the monks. It was obvious that they were the monks who came to test Zhang Xuanqing.
The two great men could make excuses to avoid answering, but Monk Guangzhen could not. Even if he could, he would not bother to avoid it.
I saw the monk Guangzhen folded his hands together and said loudly: "The Buddhist scriptures say: Buddha is awakening! There is no way to come from, and there is no way to go. Knowing that sentient beings in the country is called the world's understanding. I know that sentient beings are not two kinds of worldly beings. They possess all virtues and are respected and respected by the world. They break the bad laws of greed, anger, ignorance, etc., destroy the suffering of life and death, and achieve supreme enlightenment. All the world and beyond are respected, so they are called the World Honored One!"
Zhang Xuanqing said with a hilarious look: "According to what you say, Buddha must be respected?"
"That's natural!" Monk Guangzhen said without thinking.
Master Ci'en opened his mouth aside and wanted to say something, but finally sighed leisurely. Although he also felt that there was nothing wrong with what Monk Guangzhen said, he always felt that Zhang Xuanqing must have something in his words.
Sure enough, Zhang Xuanqing suddenly shook his head and said, "Maybe the Buddha you know is different from the Buddha I know. Young monk, I will ask you again, if 'the body is like a Bodhi tree, the heart is like a mirror platform, and you will wipe it frequently and do not cause dust to spread, can you become a Buddha in this way?"
"This...this..." Monk Guangzhen was speechless. He never expected that Zhang Xuanqing, a person who insulted and slandered Buddha, would understand such profound Buddhist teachings.
Zhang Xuanqing turned his head and smiled at Master Ci'en and said, "What do Master Ci'en think?"
Master Ci'en's lips squirmed, and his eyes drooped slightly: "My Buddha is merciful. All four elements are empty, neither born nor destroyed, neither dirty nor clean, without ignorance, nor end of ignorance. Although Taoist Master said this, he is not a correct Buddha in his words."
Zhang Xuanqing smiled without caring and said, "What the great monk said is reasonable. "There is no Bodhi tree, and the mirror is not a platform. There is nothing in it, so where can dust be caused? "? Can this be called a Buddha?"
Master Ci'en's expression changed drastically when he heard this. His lips were closed, his eyes were closed, and his hands were huddled in front of his chest and abdomen. He quickly fiddled with the Buddhist beads, and obviously his heart was very uneasy.
It would be strange if you can calm down.
These two poems by Zhang Xuanqing can be said to be the two most widely circulated poems in later Buddhism, especially the latter poem, written by Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism.
According to legend, Huineng studied the Dharma with Hongren, the fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, and worshipped him as his teacher. One day, Hongren gathered his disciples and asked everyone to write a verse to observe their views in order to give the Dharma. At that time, the most famous disciples under Hongren's seat were Shenxiu. The first one was the first one, "The body is like a Bodhi tree, and the heart is like a mirror platform. Wipe it frequently and do not cause dust." Huineng saw it and thought that Shenxiu's verse had no nature, so he also wrote a verse, which was the second one, "There is no Bodhi tree, and the mirror is not a platform. There is nothing in it, so where can dust be caused."
Later, Zen Buddhism was divided into two sects, the Southern School worshipped Huineng as its ancestor and emphasized sudden enlightenment; the Northern School was created by Shenxiu and emphasized gradual cultivation.
Now that he has just been in the eighth year of Wude, Huineng has not been born yet, Shenxiu is still a child, and even Hongren is not aware of the mountain valley. These two famous verses that have been passed down through the ages have naturally not been born yet.
Zhang Xuanqing didn't have much affection for Buddhism, except for Zen. The main Zen Buddhism is called a separate teaching outside the teachings. It is not a Chinese Buddhism, nor does it deviate from Chinese Buddhism. It is a local Buddhism with Chinese characteristics - Han Buddhism.
Chinese Buddhism is mainly divided into eight sects, namely the Three Treatises, the Dharma-Shaping School, the Tiantai School, the Huayan School, the Zen School, the Pure Land School, the Vinaya School, and the Tantric School. I won’t talk about the Tantric School. It’s not uncommon for the master to deceive his disciples into bed in the name of dual cultivation. The Pure Land School almost developed into a cult in later generations. The Dharma-Shaping School was founded by Xuanzang. Now Xuanzang has not yet traveled west, and there is no Dharma-Shaping School in this world.
It is hard to say which sect Master Ci'en belongs to, but Buddhism ultimately emphasizes cultivating the mind and wisdom, and all four elements are empty. Zhang Xuanqing wrote two Buddhist verses in succession, almost with a faint meaning of enlightenment.
Master Ci'en was in a state of excitement and kept silent. Monk Guangzhen here was even more unbearable. His face seemed to change with Sichuan opera, sometimes red, sometimes black, sometimes blue, sometimes white, sometimes sunny, and constantly changing. He really couldn't figure out why Zhang Xuanqing understood Buddhism?
And it seems to be even more advanced than his master!
After a long time, Master Ci'en sighed, opened his eyes and said, "What do you want to say?"
Zhang Xuanqing smiled and said, "It's nothing big. It's just a thought of an experience in his early years. In the past, I traveled to Xiniu Hezhou and met the Tathagata. I thought about the principles that have been passed down from the world. I asked him: "The world slanders me, bullies me, humiliates me, laughs at me, despise me, despise me, hate me, hate me, and lie to me, what should I do? His answer was: Just tolerate him, let him avoid him, be patient, respect him, ignore him, and ignore him, and stay for a few more years. Please look at him. I spit at that time, and he spits on his face and even wrote a verse: "She spits on his face, let it dry in vain. I will save my energy, and you will not have any worries." Since then, I have developed a habit. If my heart is unhappy, I will look for a temple, find a Buddha statue, and spits him twice. Sure enough, my mind is relaxed and my worries will disappear. The Tathagata really has great merits!"
Master Ci'en: "…"
Monk Guangzhen: “…”
Everyone present: "…"
What a big deal?
Have you ever seen the Buddha?
Still spitting him twice?
Everyone present changed their faces and looked at Zhang Xuanqing in surprise. Master Ci'en wanted to say that you should not commit verbal karma, but when you talked, it turned into: "Which Tathagata did the Taoist master see?"
Tathagata is a nickname for Buddha, not a specific name for a certain Buddha, but refers generally to all Buddhas in the world that are not in the world.
A smile flashed in Zhang Xuanqing's eyes: "Tagata of Duobao." Tathagata of Duobao is also known as the Buddha Buddha, the Great Buddha, the Treasure Buddha, and the Buddha name in the Lotus Sutra. However, what Zhang Xuanqing wants to see most is to wait until he talks about how Master Ci'en's expression would be when he talks about Lao Tzu turning into Buddha and turning the Taoist of Duobao into Tathagata of Duobao.
The allusion "Laozi transforms into Hu" has existed since ancient times. It was a story compiled by monks in order to make it easier for the people of Middle-earth to accept it. However, when Buddhism gained a foothold in China in the future, it turned against others and denied this statement, which is also the reason why Zhang Xuanqing did not like Buddhism.
Now that he has come, he will confirm the matter no matter what he says, and let the monks suffer the consequences!
As for slandering Buddha and destroying Buddha... Sorry, I am not an immortal. I really have Buddhas in this world? Even if there is Buddha, isn't the realm that is not as profound as Hanshan?
What he said just now was the one who asked the Buddha before, and what he said about Hanshan and Shide two great monks in the Tang Dynasty. Of course, the two great monks in Shide in Hanshan have not been born now.
The reason why it changed to his question and answer with Buddha... is to brag and fool people, Zhang Xuanqing said that he is the best at it.
Seeing that Master Ci'en and other monks were finally fooled by him, Zhang Xuanqing yawned and shook his head and said, "I'm tired and sleepy. Go back and have a nap. The monks said goodbye." After saying that, he waved his hands, greeted Liu Shenwei, and left the tavern.
When everyone in the tavern woke up and wanted to chase after him, Zhang Xuanqing's figure had disappeared outside the door, leaving only a back and a sing of singing: "When you sweep the light, you should know that there is no Buddha on the other side. Buddha is not the heart, and the heart is not the Buddha. You can rush to chant Maitreya by yourself. Don't regard Lingshan as a Buddha's place, except for Lingshan. Yuandada, the light is bright, and thousands of saints do not pass on this move..."
The round and lumps...the light is burning...it is the golden elixir!
Everyone was shocked when they remembered Zhang Xuanqing's description of the golden elixir.
"The Buddha is not the heart... the heart is not the Buddha... except for Lingshan, there are other Buddhas... Thousands of Saints do not pass on this move... So the Buddha practiced the magical method of the golden elixir?" Everyone couldn't help but think like this in their minds.
It is true. According to Zhang Xuanqing, the golden elixir is wisdom, perfection, not a physical object. No wonder everyone thinks this way.
Of course, the poem that Zhang Xuanqing read last, which was written by Zhang Sanfeng.
Unlike Lu Dongbin, Lu Dongbin was a Confucian scholar first, then entered the Tao, and then studied Buddhism, and was known as a fellow practitioner of the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Except for the last poems chosen by Zhang Xuanqing before, they were all written by Lu Zu, and some clues can be seen from them. Although Zhang Sanfeng was said to have entered Shaolin Temple first, he did not have good sense of Buddhism. At least he had many doubts about Buddhism in his poems.
The reason why Zhang Xuanqing chose this song in the end was that he did not want to choose Sanfeng's font size, and the other was that this poem was so appropriate that he would be sorry to Zhang Sanfeng if he didn't say it.
Overall, after today's incident, Zhang Xuanqing has become popular in Huayuan County.
What? Don’t you know Taoist Xuanqing? You have been dependent on your wife these days, right? Even Taoist Xuanqing doesn’t know!
What? Master Xuanqing still understands Buddhism? Have you ever met the Buddha?
