Chapter Twelve: The Fierce Siege

The Theodosian Wall was the last line of defense for the empire. Successive emperors inscribed inscriptions on the wall after repairing the wall. After more than a thousand years, the inscriptions have been densely covered with the city wall.

However, such a strong city wall seemed out of place in the new era. Under the bombardment of giant cannons, large pieces of wall bricks fell off. The defenders did not expect this situation and could only manage to maintain it.

Now, the Sultan is preparing to officially start the siege of the city. After testing in the past few days, the reality in the city has been almost figured out.

"Let's begin," the Sultan ordered, looking at the city wall not far away that had experienced shelling.

"Get ready, move forward." A general turned around and loudly conveyed the Sultan's order, and siege towers and siege engines were slowly pushed forward.

"Woo~~" the horn sound sounded vague.

The soldiers advanced in formation, holding round shields, banging them one after another, and roaring from their mouths,

"Hoo, ho, ho."

The cowhide-covered chariot is not small, and can accommodate thirty or forty people at a time. The siege tower is even larger, and covering hundreds of people is not a problem.

Looking at the advancing siege tower, Giovanni was silently calculating the distance.

"Four hundred yards," shouted Giovanni.

The instructions were passed down from level to level, and the catapults in the city began to show their power, and stone bombs were fired one after another.

"Boom~~" The siege tower was hit and made a dull sound.

"Change the fire bomb." Seeing that the expected effect was not achieved, Giovanni, who wanted to save some fuel, could only do so.

"Get ready, three hundred yards."

"Boom~~" Fire bombs flew all over the sky and rushed towards the enemy's position.

The effect this time was very good. Several siege towers burst into flames after being hit. People kept falling from high places with their whole bodies on fire, which affected the arrays next to them.

However, as the enemy troops advance, the role of the catapult has disappeared, and if fired again, it may even affect our own side.

"One hundred and fifty yards."

On the city, arrows and javelins rained down like raindrops.

"Dang~"

The enemy was well prepared, and each round shield blocked most of the arrows. Seeing that there were fewer arrows, the archers hiding behind the round shields stood up and counterattacked against the wall.

After shooting at each other for a while, the siege tower also came to the bottom of the city wall.

"Creak", after a heart-wrenching sound, the hooks and planks were hooked on the city one by one.

"Kill!", one by one, the heavily armed soldiers rushed to the top of the wall through the ladders. What awaited them were spears after spears, and some people kept falling down the wall while screaming miserably.

"Prepare to launch." Giovanni gave the order again.

With a burst of sound, ropes were emitted from the side of the protruding tower on the surface of the city wall, and the hooks on the top were firmly hooked on the siege tower.

As the barrel filled with soil at the other end fell, the force on one side was too strong and the siege tower could not bear it and fell sideways to the ground.

On the other side, the rush car also arrived at the city gate and started to smash into it.

"One, two, hit. One, two, hit." The soldiers shouted slogans and pushed the wood with all their strength.

Facing the impact of the rushing car, the city gate shook up and down, and dust fell from the junction of the gate and wall, filling everyone's sight.

"Throw kerosene." Seeing the enemy in full swing, Giovanni did not dare to relax. Due to the scarcity of supplies, he could only use a few large wooden stakes to hold up the city gate.

Cans of kerosene were thrown onto the car, Giovanni threw down the torch, and with a "buzz", flames shot up into the sky, and many soldiers standing in the car were drowned by the flames.

The Sultan watched as the siege towers fell one after another. The flames, howls, and cries could be clearly heard for miles away.

"The Byzantine city was too strong," the Sultan realized.

"First use the giant cannon to blow open the city wall, and then attack."

There was another horn blast, rapid and powerful, and the soldiers in front retreated like a tide, just as they had rushed up.

Watching the enemy retreat, the defenders began to cheer, but Giovanni had no such intention. Today's siege battle has shown many shortcomings of the defenders. The sergeants lacked training, while the enemy was well-trained and had high morale.

The enemy's artillery was too powerful, and the collapsed part of the city wall was almost breached. There was a shortage of fire oil, feather arrows, javelins, lead bullets and other supplies in the city.

"General, what should we do next?" After a day of bloody fighting, Giovanni won the respect of everyone.

"Repair the city defenses, replenish supplies, collect all the corpses and burn them to prevent the plague, and recycle the available arrows." Giovanni said without thinking.

"Oh, by the way, if the enemy comes to ask for it, return the body to them."

In fact, war is not the most terrifying thing, the most terrifying thing is the plague after the war, so the battlefield is also called the lover of vultures and the amusement park of bacteria. After the plague, the rooms are often empty, which is very scary.

After inspecting the city walls, Giovanni arrived at the Palace of Breccina, where the emperor had been waiting for a long time.

"Well, my general, is there anything I can do for you?" The emperor looked at Giovanni, the future of the empire was in his hands.

"Fortunately, although the enemy's offensive is fierce, they still can't escape with the previous siege methods, but..." The general hesitated.

"Just what?" The emperor was a little nervous.

"The enemy's artillery can often cause great damage to our city walls. If this continues, it is only a matter of time before the city walls collapse." Giovanni said straightforwardly.

The emperor was silent, and only half a day later did he come back to his senses.

"I understand, thank you for your help, my general, you will get the reward you want after the war."

Giovanni didn't say anything else. He knew how much pressure the emperor was under. During these days of guarding the city, he watched with his own eyes as the emperor encouraged the people every day, mobilized supplies, and worked until early morning every night. Although he was a foreigner, the emperor's spirit was still the same.

It infected him greatly.

War tests more on logistical capabilities, but in this period, personal quality is also very important. A person who is not afraid of death can burst out with stronger combat effectiveness, but the emperor has no way to go to the battlefield in person and can only stay in the rear.

Boost your morale,

There are no eyesight on the battlefield. If the emperor is accidentally hit by an arrow from nowhere, it will be great fun. All support is unnecessary. If the emperor is gone, what war will be fought? Who will fight for him?

The soldiers are loyal to the emperor, not Byzantium. The emperor is the hub that maintains all forces.

At this time, Laszlo has led his troops and Camizir IV is also on the way. Karamanbey is observing the situation. If the emperor dies, they will all go back home. No one will do it for the king.

The citizens of Constantinople fought to the death with the Ottomans.
