Chapter 11: Debate (2)
"The Tao is not questionable, but people are confused. The ancient sages learned from heaven and earth and understood it. However, there are only a few sages in ancient and modern times? Most of them are confused and confusing sentient beings... The boy once heard that in the past, there was a man in Qi who passed by "Shan Tai". He climbed to the top on a whim. Seeing a sea of clouds under his feet, he mistakenly thought that he had reached the peak, so he went down the mountain with satisfaction. He never thought that after returning to the foot of the mountain, he looked back and looked at Mount Tai, and found that the peak he climbed was just one of the small peaks of Mount Tai... The boy believed that confusing sentient beings may inevitably be confused and obstructed, and it is difficult to see the true face of Mount Tai. At this time, sages need to preach the teachings and solve the confusion of sentient beings."
After a pause, Meng Zhong said again: "If you are confused but cannot solve the doubts, some people will inevitably misinterpret the meaning and even take the meaning out of context. In the past, Zheng State had a powerful minister named Ji Zhong, who was a powerful minister. Zheng Ligong thought it was a disaster, so he asked Ji Zhong's son-in-law "Yong Jiu" to kill him. After Yong Jiu got the order, he plotted on this matter, but he did not expect to be known by his wife "Yong Ji". Yong Ji was in a dilemma and asked his mother "who is closer to her father?" Her mother replied that any man could become a woman's husband.
, but his father only has one, how can the two be compared? So Yong Ji told his father Ji Zhong about his husband's conspiracy to kill Weng, and Ji Zhong immediately sent someone to kill his son-in-law. After learning that the matter was leaked, Duke Li of Zheng fled to Cai State, and then Ji Zhong welcomed Duke Zhao into the country... This is the allusion of "everyone can have the husband". However, later someone misunderstood his intention and used "everyone can have the husband" to criticize the debauchery woman and misinterpreted the original intention. The boy believed that this was an example of the confusion that could not be resolved and allowed to develop."
Meng Zhong bowed to Zhuangzi.
In fact, when I heard the first half, Zhuangzi's expression was actually much better.
Previously, he had various bad impressions of Meng Zhong, not only because Meng Zhong persisted in asking questions, but mainly because the latter asked questions at any time.
Confucianism emphasizes teaching by words and deeds, and warns students to learn more and ask more questions. If they don’t understand, they will ask questions. However, Taoism is different. Taoism’s way of learning is to think about it yourself, and requires not to study hard, to look at the operating rules of all things in the world and see which ones can be learned from heaven and earth.
Therefore, the persistent consultation like Meng Zhong had in the past, not only did he not win Zhuangzi's favor, but he also disliked Zhuangzi very much - he believed that Meng Zhong's move was just to attract his attention and was too utilitarian.
This is why Zhuangzi always turned a blind eye to Meng Zhong before, and even frowned when he saw Meng Zhong come to ask for advice later.
However, after listening to Meng Zhong's words, Zhuangzi suddenly realized that this kid was not ignorant, and he was even a little smart.
Of course, more importantly, Meng Zhong showed good things about Zhuangzi in his words, saying that sages like Zhuangzi should solve doubts for the world.
I have to say that this sentence simply reaches Zhuangzi's heart.
Since Zhuangzi was a minor official in the Qiyuan when he was young, Ma Qian, a Taishi Company in later generations, called him "Qiyuan Proud official" in the Records of the Grand Historian. This is not without reason.
Although Zhuang Zhou was a Taoist sage, he was extremely arrogant and could not be said to be arrogant, but he had the meaning of "everyone in the world was drunk and I was awake alone". He believed that the world was a world of "the loss of Tao", and that the world was a world of confusion and confusion, and the "lost of Tao", and he was the only "the one who attained Tao" in the world. Therefore, he should "resolve the confusion of the world with no confusion" and return to the current chaotic world to the world of virtue. [PS: During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, rituals and music collapsed, and the princes attacked each other, father killed their sons, sons killed their fathers, uncles and brothers killed each other, and there were attacks by various countries, and the people were living in poverty, so Zhuangzi considered it to be an era of "the loss of Tao".]
But unfortunately, just like Zhuangzi's close friend Huizi once made fun of him, Zhuangzi's thoughts were not truly accepted by the world, so Zhuangzi's later reclusiveness was not cynical.
But to be honest, there is no reason for Zhuangzi's thoughts to be not accepted by the secular world. Just saying that he firmly opposes the monarchy, this alone is destined to be difficult to spread widely. [PS: It is quite interesting that Zhuangzi, who firmly opposes the monarchy, has his works regarded as a must-read book by many monarchs throughout the ages, and was also named "Nanhua Zhenren" during the Song Dynasty, calling "Zhuangzi" the "Nanhua Zhenshu". However, few people are interested in it, and most of them are the remarks of Confucianism and Law.]
Therefore, when Meng Zhong said that Zhuangzi should shoulder the responsibility of "solving doubts for the world", Zhuangzi still enjoyed it very much, and his impression of Meng Zhong also improved a lot.
So he nodded and recognized Meng Zhong's statement that "if you have any doubts about learning, you should ask." After all, Meng Zhong had explained the reason why "confusion should be explained in time" with reasonable and reasonable evidence.
In this case, Meng Zhong immediately threw out the "reason" he held in his hand and said to Zhuangzi seriously: "In these days, I was confused by Huizi's works, so I asked Zhuangzi and asked three times in a row, but the Master refused; I asked Songzi's works, but the Master refused; I asked the Master himself about it, but the Master refused. After that, Li Kui's "The Sutra of the Dharma", Wu Qi's "The Art of War", etc., all sincerely asked the Master for advice, but the Master never responded. As the saying goes, he thought he had done sincerity, but the Master never responded. He kept his words and kept his knowledge, and ignored the boy. Is it the boy who was a master of reason or the Master who was a master of reason?"
"this……"
Hearing Meng Zhong's proven words, Zhuang Bo was speechless and couldn't help but secretly glance at Zhuangzi.
At this time, Zhuangzi had no angry expression in his eyes, but instead he was suddenly and thoughtful.
Obviously, Zhuangzi also understood at this moment: The boy who came to ask for advice was not to attract his attention, but to take a word for reason first so that he could use these words to block his mouth.
But unfortunately, it was too late for him to come here at this time, because the truth was all over Meng Zhong. It was because he repeatedly 'not taught' and ignored Meng Zhong that this kid had the idea that "Taoism is about to perish because Zhuang Zhou is not in the process of striving". This logic is fine.
As for the truth, it was nothing more than this kid who dug a hole from the beginning and waited for him, Zhuang Zhou to fall into the hole.
"This boy is young, but he is very scheming."
Zhuang Zhou looked at Meng Zhong and thought to himself.
During this period, Zhuang Bo carefully observed Zhuangzi's expression. Seeing that there was no anger on the latter's face, he did not prompt him to refute it. Then he understood that Zhuangzi had admitted his defeat - from the perspective of reason, he probably could not say that the boy named Meng Zhong.
However, at this moment, Zhuang Bo noticed that Zhuangzi stretched out his hand and looked at him with a point of view.
"Is this asking me to debate with this student again from etiquette?"
Bo Zhuang was very surprised.
You should know that as far as he knows, Zhuangzi had a very poor evaluation of Confucianism, and even wrote several articles such as "The Legend of the Confucianism" and "The Legend of the Confucianism" to criticize Confucianism and criticize Confucianism for "helping evil and abuse" and was an accomplice to help the monarchs, nobles and other superior rulers to exploit civilians.
But since Zhuangzi wanted to continue to debate with this son himself, it was not easy for Zhuang Bo to go against it, so he thought about it and said, "You can make sense for the truth, but how many years of Master is older than you are, and you should respect the elder you should respect. Wouldn't it be rude to call Master the name directly?"
Meng Zhong bowed and asked back, "Boss Zhuang, do you mean that you hope that the boy respects Master Zhuang because he is much older than me?"
This is a rhetorical question with a trap. If Zhuang Bo admits it, wouldn’t it mean that Zhuangzi just lived a lot of age?
But it's a pity that even Mr. Zhuang can't hide such a trick, let alone Zhuangzi.
Then, Zhuang Bo immediately corrected: "Meng Zhong, your words are very rude!... Is the Master just older than you? As we all know, the Master is a Taoist sage praised by the world!"
"Just because the Master is a Taoist sage praised by the world, a boy must respect the Master?"
Meng Zhong shook his head and continued, "In the past, Dingtao had a wealthy family, and might be the leader of the Song Kingdom. One day he met a Wei man who thought that the Wei man was disrespectful to him, so the rich man said, "I am a wealthy man in Dingtao, you should respect me." He never thought that the Wei man asked, "Do you give me your wealth?" The rich man shook his head and rejected it, so the Wei man said, "Since your wealth will not be given, that is, it is not good for me, why should I respect you?"... Now, although the Master is a famous sage in the world, the boy repeatedly asked sincerely but was ignored. The Master is useless to the boy. Why should the boy respect the Master? Is it just because the Master is famous? Or is it because the Master is older than the boy?"
"You..."
Uncle Zhuang was speechless.
He must admit that he has seen many clever younger generations in his life, but there are not many people like Meng Zhong who are well-founded and able to speak by explaining the truth rather than being sophistry.
He secretly glanced at Zhuangzi next to him and was surprised to find that Zhuangzi was actually looking at Meng Zhong with a thoughtful look. In Zhuang Bo's impression, it was a very rare one.
"Maybe, this son can really become the disciple of the Master."
Recalling the faithful words of Meng Jian, the elder Meng's son, Zhuang Bo's heart moved slightly and suddenly asked, "What if the rich man was willing to give his family wealth to the Wei man?"
Meng Zhong looked at Zhuang Bo in surprise. He could hear that Zhuang Bo was trying to help him. If he knew the image, he should have used the Wei people's mouth to show kindness to Zhuangzi.
But this does not work. Meng Zhong now has a general understanding of what kind of personality Zhuang Zhou is. General flattery not only cannot arouse Zhuangzi's favor, but will instead cause disgust.
Yes, you must stand out as unique as a flock to arouse Zhuangzi's interest.
Thinking of this, Meng Zhong bowed and said seriously: "As Zhuang Bo said, in fact, the rich man also asked the Wei people the same thing, "If I donate my property to you, will you respect me?" The Wei people said, If you donate my property to me, then I am the wealthy man in Dingtao, and you should respect me."
This result is contrary to common principles, coupled with Meng Zhong's serious expression, so that the children of the families who were eavesdropping on the side couldn't help laughing.
Even Mr. Zhuang was a little amused and crying.
Suddenly, Uncle Zhuang was stunned. He slowly turned his head to look at Zhuangzi beside him, and then he was surprised and unbelievably discovered that a smile appeared on the corner of Zhuangzi's mouth.
It seems that even Zhuangzi was amused by the incredible ending in Meng Zhong's story.
Seeing this smile, Meng Zhong let out a sigh of relief.
